Monastery near Sydney?
« on: March 31, 2008, 12:44:25 AM »
I heard there is a Coptic monastery near Sydney, named after St. Shenouda.  Is that true?  I had never heard of it before now.  Has anyone been there?  What is it like?  How many monks are there?  Any pictures?

Inquiring minds want to know.   :)

I've never been, but the monastery is in Putty, which is about 2 1/2 hours drive from the Sydney CBD.
I'll keep it in mind if I'm traveling that way and take some pics.

I freaked out because until recently I did not know there was a Coptic Orthodox Monastery like 45 mins from my house! St Anthonys Coptic Orthodox Monastery is 5 mins away from a town in Heathcote which to understand my suprise is a small rural town in Australia which will without a doubt be 99% Anglo-Saxon.

Wow!  I didn't know about that monastery, either.  It seems our Australian friends have been holding out on us!  Have you been there yet?

Ozgeorge,
Pictures would be great!

How far would it be from the NSW/Queensland border?

Ye, Aussie Copts currently have two monasteries; St. Shenouda's in Sydney and St. Anthony's in Melbourne; and a third is being started up in Queensland.

St. Shenouda's here in Sydney currently has five monks and its about an hours drive past Windsor. Myself and a number of other youth head up every couple of weeks and spend a weekend. If anyone is interested in coming along, more than welcome, just give me a PM and we can organise things.

They have a monthly spiritual newsletter if anyone would like forwarded to.

Can anyone come, or only Oriental Orthodox?

Ozgeorge.. ye brother, anyone can come! Only males can stay overnight of course; except when there's all-night vigils, then the women can rest at the back of the church with the kids.

jayjay.. they just send it out monthly to the peoples in their email list; just get yours in there... if you want I can forward yours.

Where in Queensland is the third monastery?
