Looks like August 2nd is the weekend.

Could everyone who plans to attend that weekend, please email Bobby by the end of this week.

Based upon the number of people who are planning to attend -  I need to make arrangements for reserving the picnic area, accomodations, etc.

As I said, I can accomodate a maximum of about 10 people between the Apt in VA and the house in MD. Anyone is welcome to stay.

The shin-dig is on!

Yes and everyones' e-mail address was visible.  It could have been sent BC (blind copy not Byzantine Catholic  Tongue ) and the addresses would not have been visible.

Maybe I am crazy but I presumed that voting for a date would show my interest.  I don't think you can expect to get RSVPs when a date is not established.  Or am I missing something?

My apologies for not blind carbon copying.

Hopefully noone will take advantage of my error and use it to spam or solicit or otherwise annoy you.

Looking back, my email was hastily written, however it disappointed me to see that out of 200+ email addresses, I hadn't received a single response back even asking for more info.

The intent of the email was to see if anyone was interested, that way I could avoid doing mass emails, and just targeting email updates to those that are interested.

I see we have a small group of people who gave their resounding "yes". I have gone ahead and added them to the Summer GetTogether list, and hopefully by the end of this week I will have a definite head count, to help out TomS who is greatly helping with this, and myself so I can take care of some of the administrative stuff.

Anyway, the clocks ticking, so if you wanna come, fire me an email. August 2nd.

Like Old Faithful?  That'd be quite the metamorphasis!

Any way we can get a headcount of the people who are commited to going so far?  Sounds like we might have around 20 or so.

Also, Bobby, we may want to post a preliminary itenerary soon.

Of course there is an ulterior motive...I said it in my first post:

Just kidding.

As far as an itinerary goes, I am not sure what's going on.  Bobby mentioned a few things to me last night.  I personally am interested in looking up the Indian Orthodox parish down there so I can go there Sunday morning.  If anyone is interested in seeing how the other side prays, they are more than welcome to join (especially if they have a car, since I probably won't be able to bring mine).  Wink

So far we have about 10 people who said they were coming.

As far as preliminary itinerary which is still open to change, it is as follows(TomS please correct me if I am wrong)

Friday Afternoon August 1st
Arrive in area, get settled, vigil at st. nicholas(5pm), activity afterward
Saturday August 2nd
Picnic, location depending on weather, tour of St. Sophias, opportunity to do plenty of other stuff.
Sunday August 3rd
Divine Liturgy, maybe afternoon activity, go home

As you can see, we have a lot of free time blocks, we can play it by ear, schedule something, or go explore the city. I am working on this now.

TomS most graciously donated usage of his apartment for a few folks who don't have a place to stay. I think it can only fit like 6-8 people, am not sure though. I was probably going to get a hotel room nearby if the apartment was booked, and anyone who is interested in going that route can let me know so we can get one cheap.

Again, it's pretty casual, it'll be a blast!

Bobby,

I'm excited about this...it's around my birthday as well.  Question:  Why vigil on Friday, August 1st?  I don't see it on St. Nicholas' online calendar.

6-8 people would work fine in the Apt.

There will probably be 2 single beds and a pullout couch in there.

Bring a sleeping bag just in case all the beds are taken when you get in!

I will have an extra sleeping bag if anyone is caught short. The floor is carpeted, so it is not too bad in a sleeping bag.

Please let Bobby or me know if you will be stayiing at the Apt so I can make arrangements.

I have 2 choices for those attending --

1) We could meet on the National Mall (a long grassy area between the Washington Monument and the Capital) at say 11:00 AM on Saturday Aug 2nd) for a picnic. Then you are in walking distance to all the major sites in DC. You can get to the Mall by taking the Metro (subway) from the apt in VA.

2) Could have a picnic at a park - like Great Falls on the C&O Canal. Could rent canoes and bikes on the canal and overlook the Great Falls of the Potomac. Many hiking trails to the river and falls.

I like #1 better myself. There will be tons of things for everyone to do from the Mall. Very nice for photos. The only caveat might be that alot of tourists down there - but hey - most of you WILL be tourists anyway!

No disrespect intended here, but by August the Mall could be a hardpacked, no-shade-in-the-middle, longer then it looks, having to hike for restrooms through tourist crowds kind of place.  I'm also dubious with the current security climate that a crowd would be allowed to sing on the Capitol steps.

Around here, a picnic in a place with shade like Black Hills park (the page from the Montgomery County Parks Dept) or some other park might be a touch more congenial.  That's my tuppence and I've lived in this area for 17 years.

I think that "the powers that be" (read Dustin and Bobby) have decided on a park near Great Falls for the pre-Vespers fellowship.  We can rent a picnic area and have a cookout.

Hey Bobby/Dustin, since you guys have more info, we should get an update on the itnerary. :p

Actually, the credit goes entirely to TomS, for helping us locate a place to have the picnic.

Everyone needs to give TomS a big thank you for everything, his apartment, time and help!

In regard to the park, Tom informed me that he would be checking out a few places, we wouldn't have to rent anything since our party size will be on the smaller side.

The way its looking, I will be driving 4 from Raleigh -> DC arriving in the 2pm range.

Tony S(not TomS) will be driving from NY with his group, he hasn't given me the latest update on time.

Any others are invited, and are welcome to email me so I can send you some more details via email.

But since noone has emailed me, I am assuming that this is the final headcount.

Great Falls is a good place for a picnic.  The Mall is lousy in the summer, to crowded, dirty, etc.  I do suggest that you guys do the monuments by night, esp. the Thomas Jefferson Memorial & the FDR Memorial.  Was there last night showing my sis from RI around, & they look great. Also an option, renting a boat on the Potomac waterfront.  Right under the Key Bridge is a place you can rent conoes, moterboats, etc.  Word of warning, make SURE you park somewhere where you won't be towed.  Last night driving through Georgetown, we watched tow-trucks have a jolly time making sure some people's evennings were going to take a turn for the worse, and they have nightwork, but that's only during the weekdays.  Well, that's about all the advise I can think of... Oh, wait, also it gets REALLY humid & hot down here, so bring light loose clothing (sorry guys, I know ya'll wanted to show off in a'la Ricky Martin type shirt & pants, but you'll be miserable).
Anyway, back to my Harry Potter (almost done :-) )

Ebor -- Black Hills park is very nice -- but I am afraid that it will be too far for the people staying at the apt. in VA.

I am looking at: Great Falls (VA and MD sides), Lake Needwood (but it gets real crowded some weekends), and I am going to check out some other parks in northern VA tomorrow and Wed.

Great Falls Park is a good option, but it can be *very* crowded on summer weekends.  Are there any picnic areas in Rock Creek Park (I've never picknicked there)?  There are also some very nice informal picnic areas along the Potomac off the Mt. Vernon Parkway about 4-5 miles north of Mt. Vernon that are generally more quiet than Great Falls.  I think that the Mall would not be a very good place for a picnic -- it's really sunscorched in the summer and very dusty.  I will attend, other responsibilities permitting.

On the Maryland side there are lots of facilities available through the M-NPPC which manages county parks in Montgomery and PG counties. The variety of facilities is enormous; we could reserve anything from a picnic shelter to Woodlawn Manor. A lot of these have buildings with limited kitchen facilities and such. The hitch is that in P.G. county at least one person has to be a P.G. resident (we aren't) and in Montgomery at least 2/3s are expected to be PG/Montgomery residents. I'm guessing that we might be able to fluff the latter requirement. There's a park with a shelter directly behind our house-- convenient to St. Andrews Ukrainian Orthodox and also to a Ukrainian Catholic church-- I think there's an Indian Orthodox church a bit down the road.

I looked at the state park system and the only remotely close state park to No. Va. is Seneca Creek and maybe Patapsco. There would be no problem renting a shelter at one of these but neither is all that close to Virginia.

The local national parks are mobbed in the summer. I don't know about shelter rentals there. The mall in DC is strictly for tourists in August-- very hot and also a pain to get to.

Brickskeller is an excellent choice, go there on occasion myself.  Might I suggest the OMMEGANG Abbey Style Ale or OMMEGANG Hennepin Belgian Ale.  My personal favs.  Ommegang is domestic, brewed by Cooperstown in the Belgian tradition, & is SO good.  I have a few pictures of the Brickskeller, and was thinking about posting them, but they're...  well, we weren't at our best when they were taken, though they do give a pretty good idea of what the common room looks like.  David, the only prob with the link that you gave is that it doesn't show the beerlist immidiately.  First time I went to that site I had to search for it.   Sad

Now where were we? Oh yeah - the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn’t have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

But nobody would be able to try the 1,000 beers because the trip is scheduled during a fasting period!  :'(
