Does anyone know of a good resource on the life of St. John Cassian? Preferably something short enough to read during breakfast. Our Lives of the Saints entry is quite short, and the accounts on the OCA and GOARCH websites aren't any longer.

^^ Try here . Though it probably doesn't add too much more to what you've already encountered on other sites. You can also try looking at www.orthodoxinfo.com. In Christ, Gabriel

Did you guys realize that St. John is only celebrated every 4 years, because his feast day is on the 29th (leap year)?
I think that's pretty cool. Just an aside.

^^Hmm. That is interesting, too bad though. St. John has a lot of great teachings. I think he's fairly popular in Romania because he was born in Dobrega(sp?).

Yep. The fact he is only celebrated every four years is why we really wanted a good reading on him, but I can't seem to find anything. The links above (for which thanks, anyway) were about like what I've found everywhere. Some of the readings from Lives of the Saints are 10+ pages long - why isn't his?!

Perhaps the Church is waiting for someone like you to complete the research and study to write a worthy hagiography!

Well that wasn't the answer I was looking for... Then again, I am an English grad student, so I may take it under serious advisement. Siiighhh...but probably not in time for tomorrow morning's post-Liturgy breakfast.

I've found Romanian versions of his life. What are you interested in? I could translate some paragraphs, if you want.

ma2000, really? I wouldn't want to create a lot of work for you, but if there are any interesting stories about his life (impressive little anecdotes, little-known facts, etc - maybe stuff that isn't in the OCA or GOARCH or OrthodoxWiki articles) that would be really awesome. Only thing is, I need it for breakfast tomorrow morning, so I'd have to get a copy tonight.

I'm sorry, I only saw this when I got home from work. There's not much to add to the OrthodoxWiki article, except that what I've read covers the saint's life in much more detail. I couldn't find little know facts about the saint. So I'll just post the link to THE TWELVE BOOKS OF JOHN CASSIAN ON THE INSTITUTES OF THE COENOBIA, AND THE REMEDIES FOR THE EIGHT PRINCIPAL FAULTS
I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help to you.

Thanks, everybody. I ended up using the OCA's article, but everyone's information was helpful.
I just know what our priest told me. He was pretty excited about being able to celebrate it. Maybe he was just happy to be able to celebrate it on the appropriate day rather than moving it? Dunno. Anyway, it was great to read about Cassian and it sparked some really interesting discussion about Augustine (I am a former Roman Catholic).

No I am not sure. And I would assume that we would not move his feast day. You are leap-year boy, so you should have a better grasp on this than anyone... Seriously though, i'm not sure, some priests might, but I think your run of the mill parish really doesn't bother with it until it shows up every 4 years.
