Arabic Prayers
« on: February 25, 2008, 01:52:12 PM »
I was wondering if any of the Antiochian members of the board would be able to provide me with the Arabic text (not transliteration) of the hymn God is With Us (from the Great Compline), as well as 'O heavenly King...'. 'O Holy Trinity have mercy...', and the Lord's Prayer.

Thanks!

If others don't have it, ask Fr. Chris.  He might have some of them, leftover from a class he took in seminary.
"O Cross of Christ, all-holy, thrice-blessed, and life-giving, instrument of the mystical rites of Zion, the holy Altar for the service of our Great Archpriest, the blessing - the weapon - the strength of priests, our pride, our consolation, the light in our hearts, our mind, and our steps"
Met. Meletios of Nikopolis & Preveza, from his ordination.

O Heavenly King (done in a rush, I'll try to come back).
Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it; but if he did anything so that he may do it no more.
A hasty quarrel kindles fire,
and urgent strife sheds blood.
If you blow on a spark, it will glow;
if you spit on it, it will be put out;
and both come out of your mouth

Isa,

For ease of learning, could you possibly break that into more than one line and say what's what?

I'll try (I'm not at the Arabic computer right now).
O Heavenly King
The Comforter
The Spirit of Truth
Who art everywhere (lit. the Present in every place and locality)
 And fillest all things
 Treasury of Blessings
And Giver of Life (or ورازق الحياة)
 Come and abide in us
And cleanse (lit. purify) us from every impurity
And save our souls O Good One.

Thanks Isa! Appreciate it.

I managed to get some of the other prayers from somewhere else, but I still don't have God With Us/Allah ma3ana. Anyone?

If you mean this prayer:

Μεθ' ημών ο Θεός,

γνώτε έθνη καί ηττάσθε.

Ότι μεθ' ημών ο Θεός

this is it:

Yes, that's the one I mean. Any idea where I can get the whole thing?

The entire thing?  Not online, no.  I'll see sometime later whether I can manage to come up with something for you from my end.

What dialect of Arabic is used in the services of the Antiochian Church? Is it a current one or more along the lines of Koine Greek?

Classical Fus'ha Arabic, unspoken (diglossia notwithstanding) and at the same register and general distance from its vernacular counterparts as Latin, Slavonic, and liturgical Greek, with the difference being that an Arab can comprehend it naturally, since we are brought up to read and write Modern Standard Arabic, which functions in much the same way as katharevousa once did in Greek society.
