Are There Toxic Toys on Your Holiday Gift List?
« on: December 07, 2008, 07:09:28 PM »
Out shopping for toys for those special kiddies in your life who have been nice (and even naughty)? Be careful: Some of those would-be stocking stuffers may be toxic. The National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Public Citizen yesterday sued the feds to force them to order stores to remove tot's toys and childcare products that contain toxic plastics called phthalates from their shelves pronto.

The watchdog groups charge in the complaint filed in Manhattan Federal Court that the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is flouting "the will of Congress'' by allowing retailers to stockpile and continue to sell products from dolls to rubber ducks containing the chemicals after Feb. 10 -- the date a federally mandated ban on their production and sale is set to take effect -- as long as they were manufactured before the deadline...

Yikes.  It's a good thing we're not buying too many toys for the little ones in the extended family (cousins, godchildren, et al.).  Thankfully, we don't have too many that would use the types of "softened plastic" toys that seem to be more useful/appreciated amongst babies and young toddlers.

Yeah, but the article doesn't do you much good if it doesn't say which toys are made with phthalates.

I mean, what are we supposed to avoid? Do you know how many toys out there aren't made with plastic? About none!

At one point there was a link in that article that went to a list of phthalate-laden toys but the link is broken now.  Here are some tips on avoiding toys with phthalates:

Toxic chemicals found in a third of children's toys: Study

WASHINGTON – A third of the most popular children's toys in the United States this year contain harmful chemicals including lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury, a US consumer group said Wednesday.

The Ecology Center, which published its findings on the website HealthyStuff.org, tested nearly 700 toys ahead of the Christmas shopping season and found that 32 percent contained one or more toxic chemical.

Eek!  Well, looks like it's time to break out the time-tested non-toxic toy that's better than bad... it's good.

The list of defective toys is also defective.  I didn't see Assassin's Creed 2 or any of those other violent video games listed.

That's because DVDs are typically considered non-toxic. ::)

Besides, Assassin's Creed 2 is rated M, appropriate for people 17 and older. It's not a children's toy, and isn't intended to be. Heck, we trust people with a motor vehicle before an M-rated video game.

^^ Hurrah for the ratings.

Here is a toxic Frosty the Snowman ad on CBS.  Even the Huffington Post thought it was Frosty talking about his porn collection was perverse.

I probably have more IQ points devoted to Ren and Stimpy and Monty Python scripts than to anything useful.  :P

I got each of my God-Children a "Fun-Fly Stick" as part of their Christmas presents this year. I've had to order another one (couldn't help myself from opening one to play with it!)

What are you talking about?! Where else can you learn about the migration patterns of an African swallow than Monty Python?!

That's nice. Now to return to the subject of this thread, why exactly do you think that the absence of products designed for adults invalidates an article about toxicity in toys?

Now I don't feel so badly that we are not buying anything at all this year. The silver lining has been found! :)

A very unknown toxic toy are magnets.  They sell magnetic balls on ebay.  Kids swallow the individual balls and they stick together in their stomachs.  Sometimes they even stick different intestines together and can lead to holes in the bowels.  Very dangerous toy.
