Blessed Eve of the Nativity of our Lord, everyone!
« on: December 24, 2007, 08:05:10 PM »
Just wanted to greet you all (or, as we say here in the Deep South of the USA, "all y'all") as my wife, daughter, daughter's fiance and I are sitting down to the Svyata Vecherya - the Ukrainian "Holy Supper" on the Eve of the Nativity of our Lord.

Veselykh Svyat! Merry Christmas! Blessed Holiday!

Buon Natale, Heorhij!  All I can smell in my house is various fish dishes.    :P

I pray you all have a Blessed Nativity, full of joy in the birth of our Lord and Savior!

Thank you! We are having a number of fish dishes, indeed, and also a vegetatian borshch, sauteed cabbage, onions, garlic, incredibly delicious dumplings, and lots of "kutya" (whole wheat with lots of honey and nuts). Stashku brate, no, we don't have zhito dishes, our Ukrainian "kutya" is made of wheat ("pshenytsya"), not rye ("zhito")... but yes, people do bring dishes to the church, and priests do bless them. And we say on the Nativity Eve, "Khrystos Rozhdajet'sya - Slavite Joho!"

OK, then it's the same dish! We just use a different word for wheat, "pshenytsya," but it's the same species of plant, apparently! Thank you for teaching me some Serbian, brate! :):):)
