"Orthodox Celts" A band
« on: December 24, 2007, 12:50:23 AM »
I mentioned this last night on the "what are you listening to" thread, but then I thought this group ought to have it's own thread just so folks find out about them.

I was looking for vids of The Chieftians and next to one of them doing "The Star of the County Down" with Van Morrison was another group doing the same song with the name "Orthodox Celts".  Well, I had to find out what that was about, and clicked it.

They're out of Belgrade and good with a prime fiddler.  The lead singer has a fine folk voice; it's very interesting hearing an Irish song in English where the Serbian gentleman is (to my ear) trying for some Irish pronunciation but with of his native vowel sounds making for a very intriguing dialect. He does some step dancing, too, with "The Rocky Road to Dublin"

cool!
Oh, and I guess I get the title too - Serbian guys playing Celtic music.
The irony is that the early Celtic Church was Orthodox. They were Orthodox Celts.

Ummm Errrm  There are threads on the forum about that interpretation.  How do you mean they were "Orthodox" as opposed to "Catholic" since missionaries went to Ireland from Rome ( St. Patrick being Romano-British too and he wasn't the first one sent).

Meaning no disrespect to you on this point.

The Orthodox Celts are very good.  Plus, they are a reminder that one can be Orthodox and still appreciate the culture of the West.

Well, I guess we could call the pre-schism Celtic Church both Orthodox and Catholic. ;)
