After much goings on it has been revealed today: "The Hobbit" is to be a 2 part movie with Peter Jackson working with both New Line and MGM http://www.thehobbitblog.com/http://www.theonering.net/And remember, The Professor's birthday is in a bit over 2 weeks, so it'll be time for a favourite beverage and The Toast. Yippee! I'm interested to see what this "sequel to The Hobbit" is going to be. Maybe a Silmarillion prequel? Or just a two-part Hobbit?

One puzzling thing: * MGM and New Line will co-finance and co-distribute two films, “The Hobbit” and a sequel to “The Hobbit.”Hmm, a sequel to The Hobbit. Could it be. . . could it be . . . The Lord of the Rings?

The Lord of the Rings? Yeah, that's what I'm confused about. It's a little too early to repackage and and pass it off as the remastered retooled extra super duper special anniversary edition.

Oh, good! Eight more hours of cinematic Tolkien! (No sarcasm here, either: he's on my short list for greatest writers of the 20th century).

It had been my understanding that Jackson wanted to do a prequel to LOTR glossing the Quenta Silmarillion and the founding of Numenor focusing on the fall of Numenor and the founding of the Kingdoms in Exile and the War of the Last Alliance.

Cool. But I was waiting for the next movie in the "Chronicles of Narnia" to happen. Still, good news.

The stories contained in The Silmarillion seem difficult to bring to the screen, but I think a film focused on the Downfall of Numenor and the Last Alliance, with Elendil and sons, Gil-galad and Elrond as heroes might work well.

Ooh, that would be excellent. I love The Silmarillion. It would be hard to bring to the screen, but that's what they said about LOTR, too.
