Our Daughter
« on: December 18, 2007, 08:30:40 AM »
Please pray for my step daughter Jess - she is 17 yrs and is really gone off the ropes. She is dating a druggie, and she stormed out a few days ago after she was told to apologise to her mother/brother for her behaviour. She is out there somewhere, and we just want her home for Christmas! Being the typical 17 yr old, we threw out all our encyclopedias (because she knew everything-ha ha), and we are all wrong, she is right, and her way is the only way! Yes, there are times we have failed her as parents - and she has been told so-but she seems determined that her way of life is the only way, and because it goes against our principles, she has decided to walk out, and them blame us saying that we 'threw her out' when we never said that. Being a step dad is hard, and I pray each night for her (and my wife, step son, and son). I pray they will all find the true path - though my four year old is on the right path-each night we say the Jesus Prayer together, plus a few requests thrown in. It is not the best time of the year to have this happen, but we have rules/principles that we expect our children to follow. prayers are appreciated!! Any step parents out there with similar problems???

Lord have mercy on your servant and his family and may your servant Jess return home very soon.

Dear JayJay:

I am not a step-parent but I am a parent.  Both of my children have taken paths with the least resistance, especially my son.  One of the hardest things I ever had to do was tell him if he brought drugs into the home I would confiscate his house key and escort him to the door.  While that never happened, he did escort himself to the door a while later and a year ago we held a "crisis intervention" with him.

To watch your child self-destruct is probably one of the hardest things to do.  Just keep in mind that the Angels are watching over her.  Pray for her.  Pray very hard.

May God comfort you and your family at this difficult time.  Just remember my Dad's advice:  "You do the best that you can with the information you have at the time.  Do all things without malice and bad intent.  God will take care of the rest."

Love in Christ, Trudy
He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?  Micah 6:8

Lord have mercy!

Have you considered family counseling?  There are some really great therapists out there (and some of them are Christians).

Well, just an update. Jess came home for Christmas lunch with her boyfriend. We were all impressed with him turning up stoned, but I kept my mouth shut except to say "Happy Christmas" and "Goodbye". I think Jess turned up once since then for 5 minutes, and then was gone again. We appreciate your ongoing prayers.

It's hard, jayjay. But just keep making home a welcoming place for your daughter to come back to. If you suspect that she is short of money, press a few dollars into her hand; let her take some things from the pantry; whatever she needs to make her feel that she is still part of your family and completely loved.

When my children had problems (and they all did, in different ways), I would read and re-read the parable of the Prodigal Son - paying particular attention to the unconditional love of the Father. Now, whenever one of my children complain of their own children, I point them to that passage.

Don't give up on her; don't mind that she has a "druggie" boyfriend; show him as much love as you can, too. Really, for two reasons; 1. because it is the Christian thing to do; and 2. because you don't want to push your daughter into further rebellion in that she stays with him because in her mind you are "awful to him".

God be with you all.
