Well, considering that in less than 50 years we'll probably be taking control of our evolution through gentic entineering (at least in the west), I don't know how significant this is in the long run. However, it does not surprise me that there may have been some genetic factors within european societies over the last 1000 years that led to our advancement and progess, we certainly seem more competant and intelligent than we were a mere 3000 years ago.
