Do Oriental Orthodox use prayers ropes?
« on: October 23, 2007, 11:11:29 PM »
Just a quick question:

Do the OO use prayer ropes?  If so, are they similar to the standard EO prayer rope (woven cloth, spacer beads, with a cross at the end/beginning)?

Look at this thread, starting with reply number five.  I don't think there is anything official.  Sometimes, however, OO's will use Catholic rosaries or EO chotkis to help with the Jesus Prayer.

So am I correct to say that OO has no "native" prayer rope of its own?

From a previous thread:

The Coptic term for prayer rope is Mequetaria. Given that the existence and use of the prayer rope originated in Coptic monasticism (via St Pachomious), it should be no surprise that it is part of Coptic tradition. In contrast to the EO, however, the primary use of the prayer rope is to recite the standard 41 Kyrie Eleisons (a significantly shortened "version", you could say, of the Jesus Prayer--which nevertheless remains part of Coptic worship, though no less powerful, as various traditions within our Church demonstrate). Coptic Mequetarias are sold on the following website:

Wow, Coptic Tradition is neat!

BTW, how does one pray the Publican Prayer with a 100-bead mequteria? Are there different prayers for the first seven, the 12 Apostles, 41 for the 39 lashes, crown of thorns etc or is one to reflect on these while saying the Prayer of the Publican?

Peace.
