My mother's next door neighbor and close friend for many years, Dr. Alexander Stepanets, a mathematician and a wonderful, cheerful, easy-going, friendly man whom my mom used to call Sasha, suddenly died of the rupture of aorta. He was 65. He is survived by his wife Nina, who is now the sole inhabitant of the apartment next door to my mom's, on the 9th floor of a downtown Kyiv high-rise. Sasha's and Nina's daughter, her husband and little son live in an apartment building ~5 miles away.
I have known "Sasha" (to me, he was Alexander Ivanovich) since my parents and I moved to that apartment building in winter 1975. Honestly, I cannot imagine that building without Dr. Stepanets...
