When I visited my parents over the weekend, I saw that my dad has been watching a lot of religious channels on DirectTV. When I got home, I discovered that we could get the new Faith and Values Tier on Charter Cable. I think it's just a freebie preview, because we never asked for it. Anyway, I decided to check out some of the channels my dad has been watching.

On some channels, I found nothing to worry about. But then I found a channel which is run by a name-it-and-claim-it group. LeRoy Thompson was on there saying God wants you to be rich, and anyone who says otherwise is wrong. I checked his website; he was, indeed, speaking of material wealth. Supposedly it's so we can "help spread the Gospel." My dad has been watching Benny Hinn and Pat Robertson, of the name-it-and-claim-it and prosperity crowd, so I wouldn't be surprised if he's also watching this channel.
Then on another channel, I found Kirk Cameron of "Growing Pains" and some other guy talking. I came across them recently on another program; they had challenged atheists to come to a debate over religion. All they did was make fun. Apparently they think that atheists can be ridiculed into the church.
Then I go to EWTN. Here I can find a priest with a soothing voice, quietly teaching from the Pope's encyclicals. Now I may not be Catholic, but even though I sometimes disagree, I find a lot of good, Orthodox teaching on this program. I feel the presence of the Spirit from many of the programs on EWTN. EWTN is also available on Expanded Basic. I think we can save the $5 and not add the Faith and Values Tier when our preview runs out.
