57 people have been killed to date in the worst forest fires in living memory which have been ravaging Southern Greece in the last few days and continue to burn out of control. A state of emergency has been declared.
May our Merciful God, through the prayers of the Theotokos, have mercy.

We had a small, impromptu prayer service prior to a Trisagion last night. Somehow, these fires are for the benefits of others, but in our positions it becomes unclear to us how this is to happen.
Still, in faith we cry to you, Lord!

Lord, have mercy. We also said prayers for them after liturgy at our parish. It was a packed house thanks to 3 big memorials, and many people had been asking the priest if we could remember the plight of the Greek people.

The Greek government suspects arsonists since there is a law which forbids new commercial property in forested areas. If the forests were removed, by fire for instance, then the area can be commercially renovated. The Greek government wants to try these people as terrorists.
The loss of life is indeed horrific (about 56 people) as well as the amount of people who have been displaced and lost their homes. I am also upset that the many of ancient sites which have been excavated are at risk from these greedy jerks! Olympia, fortunately, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, was just barely spared from the ravages of the fires.
