That's not very exotic, I guess unless you are from Eastern Europe. Whoa! I'm having an epiphany right now... So normally it wouldn't seem like listening to rock music would gel with Orthodoxy, because we are shunning our vain and materialist culture, right? And rock seems to in many ways epitomize that? BUT...if we are authentically roleplaying at being culturally Orthodox, then there is a strong likelihood that we would be enamored with most things Western. Especially that loud rock music, so in order to seem like a typical Russian of my general age, for instance, I actually should be an American trying to be like a Russian trying to be like an American. Clothes, music and everything. So listening to rock music and becomes OK, but even something on the fringes of the mainstream like Flogging Molly might be too obscure for their cassette tape factories, so I'd think more Wal-Mart rock and get some Disturbed or something. Now the clothes are going to be the difficult part to pull off because normally those roleplaying like to wear strange and exotic Russian cultural clothing or at least button up the top button on their dress shirt with no tie, but in this case since a Real Russian youth wants to be an American I should get some confused and slightly tacky t-shirts with references to popular characters. No joke, I actually had an exchange student from Russia in a graduate class who turned out to be an OLD BELIEVER - the PRIESTLESS KIND. You don't get much more effing authentic than that. So what did he look like/ listen to, etc? He usually wore some shirt with Homer Simpson on it and had some really ugly uneven haircut with a slight mullet to it. This guy was unintentionally hipster ironic. So if that's what the purest Orthodoxy looks like, then I guess that's what I'll do. I'll dress like an American and listen to popular music that is about 5 years behind. Man, being Orthodox is really hard to figure out sometimes... |

I've got some awesome Russian Christmas albums, but I can't tell you the titles because they're all in the original language. Sorry.  I do have some in English. Archangel Voices has an album called "Christ is Born!," which is very good, and I think it's a double album. Then there's one called "300 Years of Russian Religious Chant," which is on the label Russian Season. From the Greeks, there's "Greek Orthodox Christmas Hymns in Meteora," by the Chorus of Great Meteoron Monastery; "Hymns of Christmas Eve," which is Vol. 3 in the series "Byzantine Music of the Greek Orthodox Church," "Toensing: Kontakion on the Nativity of Christ," and by Capella Romana, "A Byzantine Christmas Carol" by the Byzantine Choir of St. George Orthodox Cathedral. Seems what I hear when I go to the parish. As for recordings, I have no idea.
I dunno what I think about liturgical music listened to for "its own sake".
And I don't really listen to music anymore, not really. These are just some of the songs I think of when I think of Christmas.
My buddy stopped by this weekend and was shocked to hear music. And said with shock:
Music? And by white people?
I'll pass all the recs onto him. He likes buying stuff to listen to. And I can copy it if I want.

Well, to explain my case, I want to familiarize myself with some of the hymns of the major seasons, Christmas included. Not that I'm opposed to listening to any traditional/non-traditional Christmas music (except secular Christmas songs, which just grate at this point for being ridiculously overplayed in stores). But as an Orthodox n00b, that's were I stand on it. I'd prefer them in English, so as to understand them, but I'll take any other language as well. Thanks Biro, will be looking those up later. |

Revisiting high school today with the sounds of NJ's premiere punk rock band, Blanks 77. And the original 7" recordings, not the re-recorded crap on Killer Blanks.
I wish I still had that original demo tape of theirs and this trip down memory lane would be complete. Also the "live" recording they did where they spliced in crowd noise from Kiss Alive!.
