Note : Many of my posts (especially the ones antedating late 2012) do not reflect charity, tact, or even views I presently hold. Please forgive me for any antagonism I have caused.

DC Talk - Jesus Freak

Strong memories from the mid-90's with this one... ;D

Old Man Markley - For Better, For Worse

They did to Bill Monroe what Flogging Molly did to the Clancy Brothers.  Great stuff and excited to be playing with them next weekend!

Wow, luv it!  Do they do any of the bluegrass festivals?  Like Winnfield per chance-which I've had to miss the last 2 years!  Oh well. Cant believe I haven't had the pleasure of hearing this group before!

I've been on a bit of a Classical/Baroque/Renaissance Music kick.  Been listening to Pachelbel's Canon in D, Ave Maria (both Schubert and Gounod), and Requiem by Mozart, as well as Die Walkure by Wagner (a song that was clearly written with the Bell UH-1 B/D in mind), and while painting downstairs I have been listening to the Sacrae Symphoniae by Giovanni Gabrieli.

Ride of the Valkyries got me in mind of Apocalypse Now so I am now listening to The End by The Doors.

Huh, Vamrat, I never knew you were a classical guy. There are a bunch of you on the board!

Editing a piece and listening to The Offspring, "She's Got Issues." Another one of my theme songs.

I Need a Doctor - Em & Dre

Anyone who ain't part of the OC.net jackals can name the two people shown in this video I "hung" with before they became super famous, obviously, gets . . . something.

One person for just a little while, less than an hour. They were too busy working. And I had better people to talk to.

The other, a weekend.

Redacted for the why, but willing to admit I am more than a little embarrassed at how choked up this got me. Specially, live.

Gangsta Rap is too misogynistic for my tastes. How Eminem survived that kind of conditioning from Dre and his posse of slime I'll never know.

Well, I'm no huge fan of hip-hop, but I admit there is an element of genius in some of it. This one here will always be my favorite rap song; not because I praise its message, but because I appreciate the brilliance of how a particular lifestyle and worldview is articulated. Of course, 90% of the musical credit belongs to the Isley Brothers. Brilliant video as well!

I remember many years ago having a heated debate with a friend about why I thought Ice Cube was as talented of a musical artist as Bob Dylan; in fact, more so. My buddy just couldn't comprehend it. But I argued then (and I argue now) that Ice Cube is a better poet and a better arranger of musical composition than Dylan, not to mention a better vocalist. But personally, I'm not a fan of either one.

"I might be a woman beater but I'm not a p---- eater,"

In all seriousness, NWA, Dre, Snoop, etc all are women haters and I couldn't be too sanguine with their hyperrealistic arrival as "villains". Too much junk for my liking. Sure it's naive to take their fronting seriously, but I would count on Dre having a woman take more than the whole eight.

I was too embodied with Chuck's love affair with Farrakhan and the throbbing smartness of De la Soul.

Now as far as my credibility in hip hop is concerned, my favorite philosophical/spiritual/sexy/funky/catchy/wet dream of a group: PM Dawn.

OK, I'll give my connect cred I didn't think of at first. Lifted weights with Ice Cube after his break with NWA. Some S Holiday Inn gym.

I was at the bar in TimBuk2 where the girl I was dating worked at. Went up to mess (hard for me not to curse when trying to write like I talk!) around in the gym and Cube and entourage were all there.

They were cool. It was just as he was hittin' his Black Muslim angle. By far his best record and very slept on: Death Certificate

The production on that killed Dre at his own game before he even thought of it.

I tried not to laugh at the 1/8 Smith Machine squats they were into. But wadda gonna do? Pseudo Black Muslim with tons of iron all around you?

Seriously he was cool. No spot bro, though.

Now (or soon to be) listening to:

Aerosmith - Cryin'
Aerosmith - Crazy
Aerosmith - Amazing

I was reminded of this album because of the songs from '93 by Ice Cube and Dre/Snoop. Back then MTV played the above three songs at least once every hour of the day*. Didn't mind looking at Alicia Silverstone, but they totally killed those songs. Also our first introduction to Liv Tyler before Jason's beloved LOTR came out. Good times.

*For you young ones, you may not believe this, but MTV used to play music videos. No, really, I'm being serious. Fine, don't believe me.

And you take theirs?

Ice Cube's a bigot. Sure he's smart but dishonest. Aint a fan.

You keep talking about Holiday Inns. Makes me wonder if you ran into the Sugarhill Gang

That is if you take his records literally.

Which I would be worried if you did.

And with that, it's probably time for bed...

I've never had the privelage of staying at a Holiday Inn.
