Nothing.  Absolutely nothing, except when I am in the car.  I keep my computer on mute at work and unlike the guys around me, I don't subject others to my tunes.  (The guy behind me plays oldies which aren't too bad, but the stuff on the other end of the bookshelf is just atrocious!)  At home, my computer is so fouled up I run it on safe mode so no sound.  In the car I have mostly been listening to Megaherz with a bit of Rammstein thrown in.  Since it is getting warmer out I might throw the Damian Marley CD back in the player.

I often wear earplugs when in public eating alone, reading, what have you.

Just can't get with having a life soundtrack.

Willie Nelson * How Time Slips Away
                 * Are You Sure

This venue really shows just how accomplished of a guitar player Willie truly is.  If you've never really heard Willie's songs, or just the commercial ones, I think you'll be surprised and hopefully enjoy these two songs.

Gustav Holst's The Planets. This is one of, if not the, the most spectacular compositions I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. The movements :

Mars, the Bringer of War : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4h0EAqIHnqE&feature=related

Venus, the Bringer of Peace : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88DHlNx7eL4&feature=related

Mercury, the Winged Messenger : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5afofdsORc&feature=related

Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvCJw1Hw2rM&feature=related

Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MM81xFfqOb8&feature=related

Uranus, the Magician : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcXt7qhZcJs&feature=related

Neptune, the Mystic : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6N6Chjyuf7o&feature=related

Neptune is definitely my favorite (with Mars a close second) - its beauty is unparalleled.

This is probably narrowcasting here. And I hate when people reduce opera to music, but it ain't a movie either and I didn't want to create a new post.

A Flowering Tree. John Adams.

The other week a friend got great seats for $12 to see this piece performed as part of a regional summer series. Given that it is a summer series performance, I ain't even going to get into the performances, since you will not see the same staging, performers, etc. And I ain't going to let the invariable summer series nature of opera performances inform my opinion of this work.

For those in the know and those not.

When I first heard John Adams' work in minimalism, Harmonielehre for example, I was underwhelmed and chuckled at those who thought such nonsense was "edgy" or worthwhile.

Then John Adams wrote an opera. Nixon in China.

Yes, an opera about Nixon's famous visit to China.

I went to the production hoping to boo and hate the piece. Well, was I surprised. The first 28 minutes or so, from the "overture" to the end of Nixon's famous "News" aria is nearly note perfect. I've seen three productions of it and each was great with the most recent Met production easily being the best, if the performers are growing a bit old in the tooth.

Most opera newbies get terrible advice about what operas to see first. Nixon has won over many folks I know who thought they would hate opera. Nixon is a great place to start.

Dr. Atomic, an incredible work of a more mature genius. Again the most recent Met production being the best I've seen.

The Death of Klinghoffer also a brilliant work.

So unlike Nixon, I went to see the The Flowering Tree with pleasant expectations. My expectations were not so high, as the opera was created as an homage to the the The Magic Flute to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth. I hoped to see a more traditional opera, yet something well crafted.

I left after the first act.

Absolute garbage. Evidently Adam and Peter Sellars (no not that one) forgot as librettists that opera is a theatrical production and 90% of the libretto was mere exposition. Giving your performers exposition to sing kinda removes any point to their acting. 34% of that 90% of exposition shockingly was done in "voice over" narration.

I can't imagine the staging and choreography it would take to make this piece of obvious story-telling interesting.

Nearly a complete waste of time.

The only hints of interest is John Adams' absolute mastery of the use of chorus and his neo-minimalist compositional style. When the chorus chimed in, while what was sung was irrelevant, the orchestration was near perfect.

John Adams must someday create an entire work of choral music and staying true to his more interesting post-Harmonielehre style, even abandon the use of words from the chorus. If anyone could pull off making a brilliant 50 minute piece of choral work without a single word, it is John Adams

I say with all this with regret as I have had the pleasure to meet and spend more than a little time with this American Master. He is a generous, gracious, and cooly passionate man, who hopes to (and has succeeded IMHO) make opera relevant for the 21st century.

A final note after trashing A Flowering Tree.

If you ever have the opportunity to hear his Transmigration of Souls live, jump on it. I don't care what you think of "classical music". I am not much into symphonic works nor sentimentality. But this memorial for the events on 9/11 is the most evocative and haunting meditation on that day and its fallout that I have experienced.

I defy you not to weep. I tried my hardest and failed.

Seeing it live is of import as electronica is used and the staging of the sounds, music, and voices, is of incredible importance to the piece.

Forget The Flowering Tree and run to Nixon, Dr. Atomic, or Transmigration of Souls to hear a truly American Master and a unique voice soon to be included in the Western Canon of music.
