I've only ever seen this Lady Gaga person on Project Runway (yes, serious), but she annoyed PETA, so she can't be all bad... anyway...

Just voicing my opinion.  I don't like Lady Gaga.

I understand. I just get a little frustrated when people insult her.
Why?  Is she that important to you?

Certainly not in a religious way, as I would be frustrated if someone insulted Jesus Christ. I'm just amazed by her because I think she has a lot of talent.

Youths from the neighborhood playing football in the front
yard with our sons. Almost a daily occurrence. Grass, dirt, a ball, and
some friends- what more do you need? Isn't this so much better than
video games? Let the children play!

Six Feet Deep - More In Sorrow...

Most people, if they like this band at all, preferred the first album (Struggle), but I always preferred the second (The Road Less Traveled). Really the only thing in the hardcore realm that I ever liked.

Maybe even the most beautiful song I've heard for a long time. Here's a YouTube-video of some concert where it was played. Armenian sounds like a beautiful language.

I just found some old tapes and CDs in a box, while I was going through some of my things. Some of these are chant tapes; I have to break out the mp3 recorder and do some copying.   :)  (Laugh if you must.)  ;)

Either way "faux-avant-garde corporate bilge" is total nonsense if she actually writes her own music.

Impressive.  I was listening to a Yemenite muwash'shah sung by Abdur-Rahmaanil-Umari, and my ear caught on to the concluding notes at 9:22 which sound eerily Byzantine.

I am taking a trip down memory lane today...

The Smashing Pumpkins were the soundtrack of my life through junior high and high school.  So much teenage angst.  An eighth grader with Smashing Pumpkins in his walkman and a copy of "Thus Spake Zarathustra" by Nietzsche in his backpack.  What was I thinking?  What were my parents thinking?! LOL.

(Note: I do not typically listen to this music anymore.  Just reminiscing.)

My remark about the corporate character of this music was not in reference to who wrote the songs. I'm sure the "artist" in question was born to a natural human mother, also, and not raised from a test tube in a record company's laboratory.

What is chiefly corporate about this music is not merely its endorsement and promotion by corporate entities but its production (including autotune, shameful for someone with any vocal talent), its aesthetic, its consumerism, its product placement, etc. Beneath the veneer of rebelliousness is a deep conformism, both in style and in content.

I won't dispute the question of talent. I think talent, in itself, is vastly overrated in our culture. Oftentimes the most loathsome garbage is defended on the grounds of "but they're so talented!"  Talent is nothing without inspiration, without beauty, without the artistic sensitivity that cannot be achieved by acquiring a set of technical skills. If all we want is "talent," I can think of many bands of many genres who have undoubtedly great proficiency with their instruments, and who make complex and difficult music, which is nevertheless profoundly uninspired and dull.
