OK, I've got four CD's from my 20something daughter-Cool Music for Mom 1, 2, 3, and Music for Mom to Learn by heart-she is trying to educate me and broaden my horizons...and because I have been working with my guitar and singing again she says I need to get away from all that V
(a part of a woman's anatomy) music...her term for female-singer/songwriter/folk/blues I listen to-not because it's feminist-but it just a girl an a guitar and rep of the same song over and over-according to her.
Well I started with the Learn by heart CD because that is the one I am going to be quizzed on-18 songs, 12 artists.-I am taking them one at a time. I like to learn a bit about the band-and lyrics and all
#1-I will survive-by CAKE
yes it's a remake of the old 70's? disco song-but more gritty(with some profanity) and with an edge and sharp as a knife...an improvement-musicical arrangement and all, over the original in my opinion-but anything would be.
The only other experience I have with CAKE is a guilty favorite Called "Sheep go to heaven-goats go to hell".
fun and campy, and if your looking for something deeper-it's might be there-music and phrasing give some of it dubious interpretations (it could be a musical version of the verse "Vanity Vanity...all is Vanity".
There is also a popular online arcade game using the song-you try to shoot the goats (who go up and flames-and to hell, I assume), spare the sheep (who also go up in flames if you accidently hit them).
I found it and sent her-she thought it was such a hoot-she says it's her first stop when she is stressed-being a college student-I guess it beats drinking, smoking and whatever it is they do for stress management on college campus these days.
It's rather tame compared to others things I've seen.http://www.arcadetown.com/sheepgotoheaven/gameonline.asp I think I like CAKE
...fun and some serious socio-political-theological commentary is some of there stuff-and the music is not simplistic-great bridges and unexpected combos of chord progression and syncopation (a little thing to look for-good sign they know something about music).keep you posted on my new music education
