Hey y'all,
Since music is such an integral part of our lives, I was wondering what everyone is listening to? I just discovered a Lebanese gal name Maya Nasri (Hubbaaaa hubba!). I'm usually spinning something Irish or Arabic, but I like almost anything except for gangsta rap and the really heavy metal stuff... Feel free to list religious and secular favorites!

Boy, you aren't kidding about that Maya Nasri! I just got the DVD's of Rameau's "Les Indes Galantes" from netflix so I've listened to a bit of them (and if you want to see a clip of the last section "Les Sauvages" sent in (theoretically) the 18th century Native American life (well it is Baroque) I can post a YouTube link. It's a mixed setting and I'll bet you didn't know that some soloists can sing with a pipe clamped in their teeth.
I'm also listening to:

Medieval/Renaissance dances from "Orchesographie"

Right now I'm on a Deep Purple kick and combing YouTube for various live songs from the band, particularly the classic Mark II line up. I'm starting to write songs again in a very hard rock/heavy blues rock feel (lots of minor keys) and have come full circle back to Purple for inspiration. Just listening to Blackmore attacking his guitar makes me find a new way to play every single time. I only wish I could play the organ like Jon Lord, or even play the organ at all! Oh, how I dream of finding that keyboard player who I can a) put up with and b) play like that.
Ironically, the Bad Brains have also got a lot of playtime on my iPod. Again, I suppose I'm looking for some heavy and hectic inspiration.

Ever pentacostal I talk to essentially see 90% of secular music evil and they listen all to "christian"music with their stupifying hypnotic rhythms!! its good to see everyone listens to such a diverse range of music. Also just curious does anyone listen to christian music?

Well yes, if you mean things like oohhhh Handel's "Messiah" (in full bore as recorded in the Washington National Cathedral- that place has a ring time in the 10+ seconds range) or Los Calchakis' "Missa Criolla" or William Byrd/Thomas Tallis/Thoma Luis Da Victoria/Vaughn Williams or many other composers. If you mean the St. Louis J-boys' music or similar, I don't care for it. Other people like it and that's OK. (Some of it sounds like it could be advertising margerine and a lot of it is not written for group singing, too many swoops and irregular timing. The German hymns and chorals with regular meter are *made* for congregational singing.) Ebor |

All day! I suspect my Romanian girlfriend thinks I might have a crush on him.  We went to Barnes and Noble and I thumbed thru a coupla' books about him. I was seven years old when he passed. My mamma cried and cried, but so did the whole state of Kentucky where we lived. So so sad.  |

for me, any music that is beautiful, illuminating, and/or truthful, well written, well executed is christian music. Ironically, the Bad Brains have also got a lot of playtime on my iPod.
What a strange coincendence! Last week I listened to Bad Brains "I against I", what a great record. I also listened to a compilation I have of all Bad Brains reggae songs pulled from all their releases, called "Reggae Brains". I hadnt listened to Bad Brains for years before last week. |

I'm the same way. I can't just 'tune it out' esp if I like what's playing. I can get so into the music that nothing else exists which tends to rile my girlfriend. Regarding Orthodox music, what are the language preferences; does everyone like to hear it in your language or another language? I like to know what's being said, so English is helpful. But I also like hearing other languages; it somehow makes the experience more other worldly. |

Well, I just started hearing Greek Chant done in my father's tounge: Spanish. It is so awesome to hear the Anaphora sung therein.
I do like listening to Slavonic, Arabic and Greek as well, but I have also taken to listening to Ethiopian spiritual songs.
