I missed out on the U2 discussion?

They suck except for Achtung Baby, its their best album.

I'd agree if they hadn't made How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.

I so disagree with you. U2's first four albums were the best. They were raw, hungry, and unapologetically Christian with their lyrics. All four members of that band were very underrated musicians. But once they got big, they quickly became too big. I can't even listen to anything post Joshua Tree. U2 and techno meshed about as well as B.B. King and death metal.

Santana live in Chile - 1992. "Soul Sacrifice" and "Aranjuez"

Incredible drum solo by Walfredo Reyes, and beautiful acoustic guitar by Carlos at the end.

As is my wont recently, I'm going through the discography of a particular band every week and posting my thoughts on the ol' facebook for the edification of my friends.

This week it's Savatage and I'm halfway through their second album "Power of the Night."

Remember The Time - MJ

Might be his best song next to Leave Me Alone

When Invincible came out in 2001 he lost none of his talent and prowess.

Empyrium - Songs of Moors and Misty Fields (full album)

Aww yeah. They are coming out with a new album soon, btw.

So I've heard. I'll be mightily disappointed if they go back to their black metal roots.

I highly doubt they would be interested in doing that. That said, I wouldn't mind that much... their black metal stuff is great. Their acoustic stuff is just better.

OTOH Schwadorf's other band, The Vision Bleak, is making great metal, though it is more in a thrash/ gothic vein. They just released a new album themed around witches. There's a fantastic video for one of the songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDmmMbHWr0I

No link to the video, even I don't like it, but the song itself has been an earworm since Saturday night Strictly.

I lived in the UK from 2001-2003 and I went to various music festivals of that general type while there....and know a whole slew of geek-folk.

I envy you. Over that period, I was on the other side of the continent, trying to figure out if, as a long-time old school romantigoth, I could get into the aggro side as well (I couldn't). Didn't move to the UK until 2007.

"Maqam Sika", rec. before 1930 in Egypt

Just tracked down a copy of this myself a few days ago and am anxiously waiting for it to come in the mail, so I figured I'd hit YT and try to find it, and lo and behold, there it is. The other side's supposed to be an unknown Persian singer from the same collection of cylinder field recordings. Should be fun.

Greatest Hits of the Yardbirds.

Totally and wrongly unappreciated by many would-be music lovers who immediately and without thought gravitate towards the Beatles.

What? Of course the Yardbirds are better than the Beatles. While the Yardbirds were releasing things like "Eight Miles High" (March 1966), the Beatles were scoring hits with kiddie dreck like "Yellow Submarine", leaving their more interesting material to B-sides ("Eleanor Rigby", August 1966). It took the Beatles seven studio albums before they started doing anything remotely interesting/different than schmaltzy love/nostalgia songs or teeny bopper dance garbage, and even then that impulse never really left, thank you very much Sir Paul McCartney... (does anyone actually like songs like "When I'm 64", "Your Mother Should Know" "Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da", etc.?)

The Suburbs (Continued) by Arcade Fire

So short, yet so sweet.
Quote from: The Life of Ivan Neronov
[Ecclesiastics] conspired against him because they hated his teaching for its zealous emphasis on proper Christian conduct: with great courage he denounced all whom he saw behaving in an ungodly fashion... [As such] he was deprived of his priestly rank, bound in iron chains, and broken down in jails.

The Byrds wrote "Eight Miles High" not the Yardbirds.

Hahaha. Oops. Note to self: Do not post anything while under the influence of Nyquil.  :-[ Well, I also like the Yardbirds better than the Beatles, though in that case my argument would mainly revolve around "Over, Under, Sideways, Down" versus 99.9% of the Beatles' catalogue.

Lots and lots of Rolling Stones.  Dead Flowers is my current favorite.  Far Away Eyes is a close second.  Who woulda thought that Rolling Stones would be that great of a country band.  Beats the hell out of what currently passes a country.  Gimme Shelter, Under My Thumb, and Sympathy for the Devil are some past favorites.  I like how Sympathy for the Devil is one of the few songs that is not an akathist or troparia that recognizes that the slaying of the Tsar was the work of the devil.
