Cycling through my usual 'story writing aids' suspects: Nox Arcana, Midnight Syndicate, Ramin Djawadi, Anonymous 4, Mediaeval Baebes, Adrian von Ziegler, and the year's new addition, Peter Crowley.

My Lyric Opera season is about to start.

The three Operas this year:

My first show is going to be George Bizet's other opera called the Pearl Fishers.  Off the top of my head, I don't think I've ever heard anything from it before, I always try to use one of my tickets on something I've never heard.

Lyric's description:
For sheer transcendent beauty, Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers has few rivals in the entire repertoire. The opera’s famed duet for tenor and baritone is a soaring melody that has turned countless opera newcomers into ecstatic fans. Bizet (who composed this work 12 years before Carmen) transports us to Ceylon, where two devoted friends find themselves in love with the same woman, an entrancingly beautiful priestess, Leïla. From its leading men and leading lady, The Pearl Fishers demands the ultimate in vocal beauty and elegance to do justice to this sweepingly romantic drama.

After that,

Turnadot.  This is my favorite by Puccini and one of my favorite operas in general.  Supposedly a promising up and comming Saprano by the name of Amber Wagner is very good in the title role

And finally,

Così fan tutte

Never been much into CoB though. It's not bad but generally just not my thing. The singer is somewhat amusing as he looks and sounds like a teenager on stage and on interviews despite being probably something like 40.

It's not like "sweet Jane" is anywhere near the top 10 of velvet underground songs,  but that extended version with the bridge that has lyrics about "roses" does not work as good as the edited version that existed for multiple decades.   I'm not a fan that that has become the standard version that gets played anymore.

If you wanted that bridge in there (and it's not a bad bridge per se) you'de have to do bridge /  chorus / coda, or drop the coda (which is more interesting than the bridge anyway)... which would still seem really redundant and wouldn't work so well, but it would still be better than the version that exists now.   To make matters worse,   the version that exists now is mixed and mastered differently from the rest of the track which throws or off even more.  Why is this the standard version now?  It's fine for an alternative curiosity,  but that's it.

For the velvet underground, i like the one that omits the bridge, which I think was the standard version for a very long time.   The first time I heard the bridge was the cowboy junkie version.   It works well in that version,  and can work with reinterpretations of the song, it doesn't work with the version off the "Loaded" album though. It's a fine part to a song, I'm just saying it doesn't work with the way it was originally recorded.

A Secret Santa exchange has netted me a flash drive with 4GB worth of power/symphonic/gothic metal albums from bands I vaguely knew at best. That will take me probably the rest of the month to go through.

Unfortunately, I think being on the same planet as E.L. James has kind of ruined the phrase "happy dance" for me.
Christ my God, set my heart on fire with love in You, that in its flame I may love You with all my heart, with all my mind, and with all my soul and with all my strength, and my neighbor as myself, so that by keeping Your commandments I may glorify You the Giver of every good and perfect gift. Amen.
