I'll just say that musicianship and technical prowess are only means to an end; in themselves they are a vacuous way to judge music. I can name dozens of garbage bands that are highly technically proficient.

This was something that always bothered me about certain musicians.

I mean, would you rather listen to Steve Vie or The Ramones all day?  This can easily be applied to Jazz and classical too.

There is a quote attributed to Charles Mingus that I like:

"Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that’s creative.”

I don't know, I'm almost certainly reading to much into this, but to me that sounds very much in tune with a Christian intuition when it comes to aesthetics.

I don't listen to metal, but it was useful for me to hone my bass skills.  I don't know how technical tool is off hand, but I wouldn't be surprised if metal (particularly the rhythm section, especially the drums) had the best technical musicians in rock and roll.  No way could I play bass on a full set of much of that live when I was at the top of my game

Alright, I give in. You're okay.

+1

Agree completely re: Ramones vs Steve Vai. From what I heard, the Ramones did advance to a certain point where, if they wanted to, they could be a "technical" band. They simply chose not to. Would a Ramones song be improved by jolting time changes and dazzling arpeggios? I don't think so.

Charles Mingus' The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is one of my all-time favorite recordings in any genre.
Quote
“A goose to hatch the Crystal Egg after an Eagle had half-hatched it! Aye, aye, to be sure, that’s right,” said the Old Woman of Beare. “And now you must go find out what happened to it. Go now, and when you come back I will give you your name.”

Happy shall he be, that shall take and dash thy little ones against the rock. Alleluia.

Once Christ has filled the Cross, it can never be empty again.

I am listening to the Moana soundtrack a lot lately because that is what the younger kids want to listen to. For a Disney soundtrack it isn't all that bad.

The Score to the movie Glory.  A sentimental favorite in both music and movies.   This movie may have been the first time I ever saw any of the actors (Morgan Freeman, Mathew Brodrick, Danziel Wasington, Carey Elwes).  It was one of the first flicks I saw in theaters.  Maybe I saw Brodrick and Elews slightly earlier in Princess Bride and Ferris, I'm not sure.  I didn't see those movies in theaters though.

Continuing my first return to Siouxsie & the Banshees since my teenage years. When I was a teenager I was convinced they were the greatest band in the world. I hadn't heard many other bands, but somehow I was sure. Since then I've acquired a pretty eclectic and wide-ranging taste in music and immersed in a gajillion genres. Coming back to the Banshees, though, I'm beginning to think my initial teenage assessment was correct. They really are an amazing, one-of-a-kind band. Dark yet playful, avant-garde and experimental while somehow sounding fully formed and accessible. Despite leaving far behind what is now considered the punk sound, I think they exemplify the original punk spirit more than any other band. And none of the goth bands who purported to follow them were half as interesting. Siouxsie Sioux and Steve Severin are top-notch songwriters and lyricists- they are masters of memorable, surreal, menacing phrases. For a while Morrissey was my idol, but even he agrees: "None of the bands today are as good as Siouxsie and the Banshees at full pelt."

Are you a Cocteau Twins fan also, Iconodule?

I like the Cocteau Twins but am not crazy about them. If that makes sense.

I'm with the camp of 13 million Americans that believe politicians are, or are controlled by, Reptilians. I think only monks can solve this problem. It doesn't seem right that they prefer to ignore it.

When I was in my full blown rock days I'd probably constitute being in the "post-punk" / new wave wing of it.  I think I thought about writing and listening
and judging newer music from that context.  Sadly, Sousixie and the Banshees were not one of my main bands.  More by historical accident, I always liked them and respected them, I just didn't listen to them very frequently.  I never really thought of them as "goth" forerunners as much as they were cornerstones of just about every form of rock that came after them.  They were huge in many of the things that came out of Detroit and Cleveland at the time (which included much Industrial and electronic music), including many local bands I worshiped growing up.  Unfortunately, I don't think I can really enjoy rediscovering those bands anymore.  I can only listen to rock out of nostalgia. My ear doesn't work anymore for that genre the way it once did, though I still naturally write in that vein due to habit and the way I was formed.  So I don't know if I can ever fully appreciate the essence of Sousixie and the Banshees anymore.  That stated, I don't think there is a band I loved way back when I was 15 that I have put on ice for 15 years...I think every band that I grew up loving I have revisited from time to time, and not just drunkenly at some bar.

I just got done watching stranger things because 5 million people kept harassing me to watch it, and being that I'm old I can only not listen to people defiantly out of spite for so long, I get worn down easier.  Anywho, whoever did the soundtrack( and I think the writers themselves) were very much influenced by that whole genre and subculture. They utilized a classic moog with those synth sounds I used to love so much. Had this show came out 10 years ago I'd probably be tickled pink by it (even now, it's a good show in its own right).
Holy Toledo!
