"Lakmé," 'Flower Duet.'

One of the happiest moments of my life was landing at LHR on a British Airways 747-400, in FIRST, in 2006.  They played the Flower Duet while we were on short final.

That piece was for many years BA's theme music.

Right now I am listening to Wagner's Ring Cycle.

By the way, if Wagner can get away with a 17 hour set of operas, why can't we manage a 17 hour liturgy?  You can't tell me that wouldn't be epic.

Gothic Pipes with Capella Romana.  There is something delightfully ironic about listening to one of the great Orthodox vocal groups accompany a recording of the oldest extant organ music!

I don't know if I'd call Capella Romana Orthodox. Their concept album on the fall of Constantinople included Odes from Canons honoring Thomas Aquinas and the Council of Florence.

They are Orthodox, but not everything in their recorded repertoire is Orthodox.  This particular album also includes works from the French composer Dufay and is meant to highlight the music of the Mediterranean and European worlds at the time Constantinople fell.

Very interesting for 2 reasons:
1. Western song about Protection of the Theotokos
2. The language - does modern Portuguese differ a lot from the song's one? As for me, knowing Spanish, it seems to be closer to modern Spanish than modern Portuguese.

It does differ a lot, specially because the dialects that gave birth to mainstream modern Portuguese weren't the most esteemed, which makes modern Galician closer to the old language. I think the untrained Portuguese/Brazilian ear should grasp around some 3/4 of it, but, knowing Spanish and being used to this form of the language, it becomes easy.

Some interesting trivia about one of my favorite standards, "blue moon":

It was originally called "the bad in.every man"'and was shown in.the movie Manhattan Melodrama (Staring Clark Gable, William Powell, and Myrna Loy).  This version is song by Shirley Ross:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=j3t0cBC6g5U

Right across the street from where I usually work is the theater that John Dillinger was gunned down while watching this movie.  Tourists always take pictures of the theater blocking me as I'm.trying to walk.

And I was lucky enough to find this:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kvEocQhMh1o

It's an even older version entitled "prayer" .  It was supposed to take place in.some movie where "Jean Harlow is shown as an innocent young girl saying - or rather singing- her prayers" about becoming an actress in Hollywood.  The lyrics to this version are some of the most charming lyrics I've ever heard.

I wish this version existed in.an.orchestrated form.  Maybe that can be a future project for me, though the version on YouTube is certainly very good.

That bass line comes out swinging right from the jump! Sweet. A great anti-drug song. An anthem for anyone struggling with addictions. Powerful song musically and lyrically.

Listening to The Distillers. Brody Dalle's voice is just wonderful. Punk with an occasional bit of a grunge vibe. Why did this band have to dissolve? Further proof that the Golden Age of Rock ended in 2006.

I've had that happen before, too. It's annoying and I'm not sure why it happens.
