A beautiful Paschal (Easter) hymn sung in Old Slavonic. The words are below the link. I find it very peaceful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yup8_ecrFksThe Angel cried unto the lady, full of grace: 'O pure Virgin, rejoice! and again I say, rejoice! for thy Son is risen from the grave on the third day. And He hath raised all the dead.' O ye people, be joyful! Shine, shine, O new Jerusalem! for the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. Dance, now, dance and be glad, O Sion! Do thou exult, O pure Theotokos, in the Resurrection of thy Son! - The Zadostoinik of Pascha

I enjoy vinyl records, and enjoy several classic rock artists, including the Beatles, the Who, the Moody Blues, Bruce Cockburn, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, U2, REM, and others.
I have been in a Beatle-ey mood this week.
I just got done listening to Beatles VI; the day before, Magical Mystery Tour, Rubber Soul (American) and Yesterday & Today .
All my Byzantine music is on CD, I went to sleep last night with the CD the Glory of Byzantium, I enjoy Divna.

Depending on my state of mind (so clichee)...but I like to listen to Chavela Vargas, Lila Downs, Yasmin Levy, Niyaz, Irfan, Reggae (the Marleys usually), Opera, Placebo, Serj Tankian (like him do the solo thing, better than SOD), Bossa Nova, and the ethnic types eh...Arabic, Russian, Greek, Romanian, Mexican. Ah and the "new agey" meditation music when I'm studying...though some nature sounds like water could be counter-productive. Anyhow, nice to see what everyone is listening to!
Peace!

Do the BartmanNo, I didn't watch the Simpsons last Sunday, a special showing of the episode where Bart does this dance and Michael Jackson is given posthumous credit for writing the music. I actually just discovered this video. FYI, I understand that the Simpsons will show Episode 3.01, "Stark Raving Dad", this Sunday evening in memory of MJ--Jackson guest stars in this episode. It's said that MJ was a big fan of the show.

YEEEESSSS! As for me, listening to Thomas Tallis' Spem in alium, a 40 voice motet. I may not care much for Catholic theology, but I loved what the Catholic composers wrote.

I love Damian Marley. "It was Written" is one of my favorite reggae songs, and it features Capleton, aka the "Fire Man." The video for the song is also really cool, featuring a kind of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" theme. You can watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tm094E8tGwcSelam

Hey, I'm listening to myself! My record just went up on iTunes. Search for "silouan" and check it out. Leave me a killer review if you dig it, say nothing if you don't! Pardon the shameless plug! For those of you who've read my past history of posts, I survived a jet crash, life fell apart, put my life back together, today I have 5 kids(one on the way), an incredible wife, and do what I love. The music tells that story - sorta. It's a mix of rock, alternative, and a lot of story telling.

Chevelle Franklin SalvationChevelle Franklin is an extremely talented vocalist who used to make slack dancehall songs, but now she devotes her abundant talents to praising Christ. This song is great because it combines a great dancehall rhythm with a strong Christian message. Listen closely, it's powerful! http://video.aol.com/video-detail/salvation/3907898393[For those unfamiliar with reggae, "slack" refers to music that contains negative messages such as sex and violence. "Conscious" music is that which uplifts, heals, and accentuates the positive. "Dancehall" is a style of music that originated in Jamaica and was based on Ska and Reggae rhythms. The Danchall is equivalent to the "Club" in America, and so the message of Dancehall music was not "conscious" but usually "slack." However, conscious reggae artists such as Garnet Silk, Everton Blender, Sizzla, and Capleton have revolutionized the Dancehall scene by combining Dancehall beats and rhythms with a spiritually positive message. Chevelle Franklin has done the same thing with much of her Gospel music, and this song is a great example.] Sorry for the music lesson. Selam

^ Sounds like she's still making slack music. That video was definitely glorifying violence; every second of it was lifted directly from The Passion of the Christ.

While you're on your Jamaican kick, check out Ernest Ranglin. He's considered to be one of the greatest reggae guitarists ever. A Ska/Rocksteady style combined with a Wes Montgomery feel. Very smooth and rhythmic. I love him! http://video.aol.com/video-detail/ernest-ranglin-surfin-dubbing-with-ernest/2069028329Selam
