Ungrateful Biped

« Reply #5220 on: December 03, 2013, 04:25:54 PM »

Listening to a podcast from AFR. Honestly, this is frustrating. How do you have several graduate degrees, command of multiple languages, years of experience in theological discussions, national exposure and a university teaching position, etc... and still not be able to muster more insight or depth than someone could get from a basic level wiki article? In fact, I think the wiki article would have less mistakes.

Which one, if you don't mind disclosing?

I just stumbled on another podcast after being directed to the site by a post of yours and was heartily disappointed by the "Bashing Heads" one (Spoiler alert: don't worry about OT stuff, as the silly cavemen people didn't understand God yet).
I just listened to that yesterday.  It's better when he focuses on keeping his podcasts under the 4 minute mark.  I didn't come to the same conclusion as your spoiler, though.

My spoiler was in poor taste. The podcast was obviously more nuanced and helpful than I gave it credit for.  It included the required "seen through the light of the New Testament," but also talked about how many Fathers--not just modern folks uncomfortable with difficult subjects--used allegorical interpretations for spiritual benefit.  While I think the message that difficult portions of scripture are beneficial to us is important, the topic of difficult portions seems too intense and complex for a several minute podcast.  In the end though, I felt that he too easily fell back on the view that these "bashing" acts were misinterpretations of a people not able to understand God's will and message yet.  I don't think this is wrong, per se, but a tad too dismissive of a lot of "bashing" that apparently happened in scripture.

I found a thread discussing elements from the topic, but it didn't seem too helpful.  I may revive it at some point though.

Actually I feel bad for going off like that. It's someone who has been criticized on this forum before, but I'm past my frustration and don't want to dump on them anymore. So...  Lips Sealed

Instant classic, and really the only true great MC song.

I remember Mariah Carey being the best female singer, like, ever, back in the early/mid-90s. Of course I was a lonely teenage boy and she was a famous and pretty girl... but I'm sure that had nothing to do with it.

Pantera - Cowboys From Hell (http://youtu.be/JHPV-XF0vx0)

I always thought if I was a pro wrestler that I would want the first part of this to be my ring entrance music. It's a great representation of where Pantera and pro wrasslin cross paths, with the whole corny, flashy (but not especially substantive), energetic, tough-guy shtick/vibe.

I guess the anniversary of the passing of Darrell was a couple days ago.

Can you reword/reorder the last sentence? Smiley

As for Pantera, eh, I don't hate them the way some people seem to, but I also usually didn't like more than a couple songs off each album (though Far Beyond Driven was fine I thought).

Yes, I will reword it. Pantera is quite a belligerent phenomenon if it wasn't for the great art that sometimes flows through them. I use them for the art. I don't hate them overall, God forbid! Smiley
