Go here to vote for the cover of the Orthodox Study Bible that you most like.  Be sure to tell which one you picked...

(I voted for the first one.)

I voted for number two. I just liked the design better and it is a break from the original cover design.

Number one.

# 1, # 3 resembles the original dust cover of the hardbound, I have the HB & the leather covered one, not bad for a Latin eh...

No. 3 (Although I'm hoping a leather bound version will be on offer)

I can't believe we're at the stage of choosing covers! Is it getting close, or is this just a ploy to keep us interested for another 12 months? :D Anyone have any inside information?

I am hoping that it will be released soon, but with them now just deciding on the cover design my guess is it will not be available until the end of the year. Then the next major issue, what is a copy of this gem going to set us back?  :o

Tough decision between #1 and #3 but finally went with #1.  I'm not accustomed to publishers actually asking their future customers for an opinion on a cover design.  They could wrap it in brown paper with polka dots and I'd still be happy though.  It's a long-awaited blessing for all of us.  Is there any chance the major bookstores will stock it, i.e. B & N and Borders?

Number one...symmetry is a classic design layout and the colors are appropriate too.

George, the priests who work on this Bible are in my deanery. I think they were hoping for an earlier release ('06) but I think cash flow might have been an issue.

Believe it or not but it is the big books stores like Amazon, B&N and Borders that will have it first. They won't ship to smaller bookstores (like most Orthodox book stores) until the release date. The big bookstores get their shipments before the release date and then put it out on the release date. If this was an independent production it might work differently but since Thomas Nelson is handling the publishing and distribution your best bet is to go to Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, or Borders.

Well so much for all those vellum illuminated manuscripts.  It's got to be better than the news story that someone emailed me today about this guy in Germany who's turning dead cats into bio-diesel for his car.  Now that's sick.

I'm sure that the leather issue only applies to actual liturgical used books...

LoL :D No joke, George. It is frustrating....

I liked all 3, but voted for Numero Uno because of the colors and layout. It reminds me of an icon....

BTW, what's the deal with some Orthodox attacking the OSB? I visited a site called True Orthodoxy.com (PM me it that's wrong), and they had quite a lot to say about the OSB's notes. Is True Orthodoxy schismatic?

Gabriel

I think you might be referring to the Orthodox Christian Information Center (www.orthodoxinfo.com), which bills itself as the web site for "True Orthodoxy"--I did a Google search on the phrase "True Orthodoxy", and this was the first web site listed.  This web site represents the traditionalist camps of the Orthodox Church such as the Greek Old-Calendarist churches (of which our site admin Anastasios is a member) and what many claim ROCOR used to be.  To my knowledge, the churches represented by the OCIC have never judged the "mainstream" Orthodox jurisdictions to be totally apostate and devoid of sacramental grace, but they have broken communion with "mainstream" Orthodoxy in resistance to what they see as modernist and ecumenist trends toward eventual apostasy.  I have no personal reason to consider them schismatic, though I identify myself solidly with the mainstream.

I am familiar with Archimandrite Ephrem's criticism of the OSB as posted on the OCIC web site, and I can't say I totally disagree with many of the points he makes.  Even my "mainstream" priest has criticized the OSB as being much less than the ideal for which the Orthodox Church should strive, and he provided most of the study notes for a couple of the NT books.  I get the impression that he sees the OSB as a needed attempt to make an Orthodox understanding of the Bible available to the English-speaking world, but that it's right now very much like a toddler's first steps; we should try to do a lot better in the future--his main problem is the choice of the NKJV rather than the RSV that he prefers.  Personally, if I really wanted to conduct an in depth study of the Bible, I would want to read the RSV together with whole books of Patristic commentary, not just the relatively scanty study notes in the OSB.

(Note:  All my references above to the OSB refer to the New Testament published years ago.)

It's been "almost finished" for so long that I admit I'm still a bit skeptical. When my parish can purchase them, I'll believe (but then, my parish is named for St. Thomas).

I liked the green cover best myself, but I can't say I disliked any of them.

Y, our parish just received the Christmas catalog from Conciliar Press indicating that the OSB would be available in February and that we could pre-order now for a discount (offer open until December 15).  Today alone, we had enough orders for more than a case; it seems there's a fair bit of demand out there for it!

Apparently ours did too, and we've enough orders for a case of hardcover and a case of leather-bound. I ordered mine today. We've also begun collecting donations to replace our church's collection of NKJVs with OSBs for Sunday School. I had no idea that the publication was this imminent; until I actually saw that catalog this morning, I figured it was just another "release date" like all the others. Nope, this one's for real!

Where can I get this Christmas catalog?  I wonder if my Coptic parishes get them.
