I became aware yesterday that my son had an account on Myspace.com (without our permission)so I got his user name and password and logged on. The site was filled with pictures, videos, surveys and a whole lot more. As I clicked on the related sites of my son's friends, I saw that pornographic sites have the abilility to enter kids' sites under the guise of being a friend. One site in particular was incredibly frightening and dangerous. It invited the kid to click onto this particular site which was hooked up to a webcam and offered pictures and videos of "Live Teens". This site was not only pornographic but was also predatory in the way that it tried to lure kids to the site and to participate. I've read articles on the rape crimes and the victims and suspects meet up through Myspcace.com. One of those articles are from here and many others. If your child has an account on MySpace, get on there and check it out. Even if your child's site is fairly benign, check out what it is linked to. This isn't just
"rebellious" kids who are doing this - it is a lot of our kids (kids who homeschool, kids from church, kids from youth groups, kids from Bible study). And the most important is talk to your teens, explain to them the extent that what might could happen to them and guide them not to make such wrong decisions.

I found out my daughter has an acct too..she's 17.  Mostly it is whining by her friends about how rotten life is, and aren't allparents total losers, etc.  Boring, but no links to much else.  I forbade my 11 year old to open one, unless we set it up together, and I have the password.  She's not stupid, as I am sure most kids are not, but like you said, there are people out there that know every trick in the book.  She was chatting on Nickelodeon chat or some other thing the other day and I asked if it was a friend from school and when she said no I made her turn it off, and made it very clear that she is not to chat with anyone unless she gets an ok from me, and unless she personally knows them. I have no idea if it will help, but it is about all I can do, while she is still willing to listen to me!

I finally let my daughter have a myspace, and she is nearly 17.  All of her coworkers/friends have one, was the common complaint.  I didn't care.  I am a cop's kid and highly leary of stuff like this.  I have her account password and can check it at any time. In fact, I have an account myself and it's the only way my estranged sister will "speak" to me and the only way I "see" my brother.
It is set to private and I monitor where she has been.  Many parents aren't sharing the same computer or are too busy to do so.  Predators are everywhere, MySpace is just the current choice for them.  Being that it's the most obvious they lurk in other places with less guard.

I set one up too, and believe it or not she (daughter) added me as a friend.  It's the only way to keep up with some people, as you say.  Of course now I can't remember what my account name is or anything. LOL!

To those who are writing of Myspace I might have found an alternative that is even better!

www.orthodoxcircle.com

This is a myspace of sorts with an Orthodox Christian twist. If you want an idea of the differences you can take a look at my profile and see if this is something you might enjoy.

Enjoy! I know I do, a whole lot more than MySpace!

I see little activity there, and none of our family is ORthodox so the circle only fits for a small portion of my life.  I have a large family group there on circle, with no activity so...
