Lord, have mercy on the Christians in Mosul!

« on: August 25, 2007, 11:30:36 PM »

I thought all of you who can (virtually the whole Pacific basin) would like to see this next Tuesday:

From the NASA web site:
Total Lunar Eclipse: August 28, 2007

If you live in Africa, Europe, or West-Central Asia:  Sorry, you're out of luck this time.  Maybe you'll get your chance to see the next one.

Another reason to break out the telescope and set the early alarm.  Thanks!

For those of you who will not be able to see the Lunar Eclipse, there is a live webcast of it from Eastern Australia (which will have a prime view provided it's not cloudy):

Look for the many Lunar-tics to commit a few crimes and blame the eclipse...though I must admit to being partial to Blue Moons.

Unfortunately, this one will be red.  Wink

TIME:  03:28 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time

Ten minutes before maximum totality...

What a beautiful sight!  The moon looks like a pumpkin in an almost totally dark room.  A very dark orange in color...

... Ghost Riders in the Sky, Riders on the Storm, and the Ghost of a Texas Ladies Man as well.  Grin

Mr. Y and I woke up at 3:30a to watch the eclipse and it has been quite beautiful so far.  From our house in southern Missouri, it's a deep red with a reddish-orange ring around the rim of the moon.  I wish I could find the USB cable for our camera so I could take pictures (our camera is still full of pictures from our honeymoon and Mr. Y's trip to Europe).  Yay for naked eye astronomy.

Any news from the other side of the Big Ocean?  How 'bout you, Ozgeorge?

Sizable portion of the cookie now showing bright white with still a big bite taken out of its bottom right quadrant...

There is an easement on the back of my property which has the best clearing through the canopy of the gum trees, and two of my neighbours joined me with my telescope. We've just spent a remarkable 3 1/2 hours watching the eclipse, sipping billy tea and talking. The moon went a dark orange, then blood-red during totality which lasted about 90 minutes, but what I found most spectacular was watching the speed with which the Earth's shadow moved across the face of the moon at the end of the eclipse when watching it through the telescope. By focusing in on a feature such as a crater just outside the Earth's shadow, we could actually see the shadow moving away from the crater quite quickly and revealing more features.
