FrChris, For me, it might be easier to communicate with you in Sanskrit, rather than Redneckian. And I don't speak a word of Sanskrit. On second thoughts, as I have managed to learn to communicate with New Zealanders, I could give Redneckian a shot---- y'all.

lol...my everyday writing is based on the styles of various 19th century southron authors...so I dont mind giving a go at copying the styles I have observed to be used by semi-literate 19th century soldiers

Well, I don't know about talkin' no redneck, but I do know I am from West Virginia on my Daddy's side and I can remember the family reunions in Alderson when I was a youngin'. And I do remember spendin' some time with cousin Daisy out behind the woodshed. I guess old traditions die hard.

I just can't believe this actually happened. If I had any concept of "southern" i might join in, but i'm a Yankee through and through. Although, I was thinking this might be part of the "Romance Languages" thread...

Ah, this thread takes me back to the year I inadvertantly started saying y'all whilst sharing a house with three southerners (one from Kentucky, one from Alabama and one from Tennessee). Ironically, they were all employed in the UK as speech and language therapists. Mind you, I find it far more understandable than the Kiwis - I once was interviewed by one of those who identified herself as an Ocupieshunal Thirapust. Goodness knows what my accent sounded like by the end of that year - southern English laid over a Yorkshire substrate with nuggets of southern states must have sounded truly odd.
Anyway, I can understand y'all, but don't expect me to be able to join in.
James

Ail'ds from the bordah state o' Tennessee, which's gittin' overrun by 'em Yankees. Ail Go's a 'zample of'n this overrunin'! 'Fraid not, Fathah...y'see, Tennessee's gotta buffer in Kentucky, which never quaht came all the way down t'Dixie isseff. May o' been late in gettin' outta th'Union, but out she came! As fer Gore, well...all I can say is bless his heart...an' y'all from 'round here know what that means, so I'll jes' leave'r there... Y'see, beeins that we's all hillbillies an such... Ah mint nowadays, Tinn'see is a buffah state, since Kintucky is now swallowered up by 'Hio (an' ah wint to school in Kintucky; Kintucky's fate is a sad thang, ah know...) but now Tinnessee is raht on the bordah, beset bah interlopers such as Mr. Go'. God geeyiv 'em the strent' ta faht this interlopin'. 'Course in t'at maj'r dis'greement, only Ginny had more fightin' t'an Ten'ssee...but any Civ'l War buff would know t'at! Also, since Kintucky trah'd to be a nation all's by themselfs in the Wah, but Mr Linc'in would hae none of t'at ("I'd like to have God on my side, but I must have Kentucky" he once sayd) ah co'ld argue t'at Tinn'see was a bordah state 'n the Wah...jist borderin' the Com'nwealth, not the Union.

Where I live, in the country of NY, we have people with a twang in their accents, too. You hillybillies must have had some sort of ancient Mormon American empire and spread your kind everywhere!
