Actually, it's probably better we have a separate thread to discuss the KHL tragedy by itself. This sports thread is just for random postings on sports, a place where the KHL tragedy may end up getting lost. Additionally, the subject of a number of athletes dying is too serious for the kind of discussions we have on this thread.

Ducks beat the Nevada Wolf Pack 69-20 on Darron Thomas's school record 6 TD passes. Beavers get skunked 35-0 by the Badgers of Wisconsin. All told, it was a mixed day for college football fans in the state of Oregon.

Is it me, or are the U.S. football games (pro and college both) more high-scoring these days? Everybody's got these 80-53 scores and things like that. What's going on?

All three of my almae matres won today: TCU was back in form, solidly thunking Air Force 35-19; Cal had to struggle to beat Colorado 36-33; and Texas just barely redeemed itself by eking out a 17-16 win over BYU.
Big North (aka Big 10) fans have got to be wondering what's going on, with Penn State losing to Alabama, Michigan straining to beat Notre Dame, and Minnesota losing to the lowliest of the low, New Mexico State. Oh well, early-season jitters....

More teams going to the higher scoring Spread Offense and all its variations, at least at the high school and college levels. Spread defenses out with four receivers, take advantage of isolation mismatches in the open field where a defensive lapse can allow someone to bust loose for a long TD, and run the ball through the large lanes opened up by the passing game and four-receiver formations. Not all that many teams anymore continue to go old school and try to ram the ball down opponents' throats, an offensive game plan that consumes a lot of time and limits scoring opportunities for both the team running the offense and their opponents. Even at the pro level, where only the St. Louis Rams of Kurt Warner's heyday (and maybe the recent Patriots team that went unbeaten until the Super Bowl) really tried running the Spread because of how it exposes the QB to much bigger pass rushers than he would face in high school and college, teams still pass the ball much more frequently than they did 20-30 years ago. Talk about high scoring, we had a high school football game in my state just this weekend that finished with a score of 64-59.

This spread offense they use in american football now is retarded. When I was in High School (only 4 years ago) we ran the wishbone...that was a man's offense. I suppose if you like smash mouth football. I can enjoy watching a team line up in a double wing and just run off tackle all day, yet I can also enjoy watching a team line up in a double slot and throw the ball all around the field. If you want physical play, ISTM that the spread is more conducive to the crack-back block that can not only land a defender on his can but also send him flying backwards five yards.

Okay, Stiller fans, explain this: How can a team lose the football SEVEN (7) times in one game!!? I can think of three possibilities: 1) We stink, stank, stunk. Like 76-78 Bucs or 08-09 Lions level stink. 2) It was just a fluke. Everyone just had a bad game, and it won't happen again. 3) We decided to let Baltimore win for once, perhaps as a retirement gift for Ray Lewis and Ed Reed. I'm guessing it's 90% number two, and 10% number one.

Bengals are off to a very good start. We'll be better when Dalton learns how to handle a sprain, but Gradkowski's mediocrity did give things a certain excitement that the first quarter lacked.

This is just insane! In a high school football game in Arkansas, one team had a 29-0 lead before the other team's offense even ran their first play. Evidently, after fielding the game's opening kickoff and driving for a TD, the team recovered three consecutive onside kicks and turned them all into TD-scoring drives. Their opponent didn't have the chance to run an offensive play until after they finally recovered an onside kick on their fourth try. More on this amazing feat here: http://rivals.yahoo.com/highschool/blog/prep_rally/post/Arkansas-power-leads-team-29-0-before-it-can-tou?urn=highschool-wp5870

Well, there's one way to erase the sting of losing to LSU in their season opener: beat up on a couple of pansies. beat Nevada 69-20 beat Missouri State 56-7 The question is: Will that get the Ducks ready for Pac-12 play? An amazing tidbit about one Duck player: Freshman TE Colt Lyerla (Hillsboro, OR) has caught only three passes so far this season, all of them for TDs! How's that for efficiency!!?

All my almae matres won again: TCU dispatched ULM, albeit with a slow start, and Cal did the like to Presbyterian, which isn't saying much for Cal. What was the real shocker was Texas returning to the Rose Bowl and devouring UCLA. Obviously, they had last year on their minds, not to mention the upcoming battles in the (possibly moribund) Big XII, especially Oklahoma, who are in position to spoin the 'Horns' dreams in more than one way.

My beloved CRIMSON TIDE looks like a top 10 team so far, but not like a top 3 team. We'll know more next week against Arkansas. I predict we'll lose 3 games this year. Hope I'm wrong.

One thing I like about the Lions: DT Ndamukong Suh. A graduate of Grant High School (Class of 2005) in my home town of Portland, Oregon. That kid was a monster even in high school (on the field of play, that is). What's sad, though, about the Chiefs game is that their RB, Jamaal Charles, was knocked out for the season with a torn ACL.

Indeed, one of the best. My top five college fight songs: 1. "Yea Alabama" 2. "Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech" 3. "Notre Dame Victory March" 4. "The Victors" (Michigan) 5. "Fight On" (USC) One of the many reasons I love college football. Selam

Have you seen the movie "Everybody's All American"? One of my favorite sports movies. It's about an LSU football player. Selam

Selam No I have not, I didn't know it was made into a movie, thanks for letting me know though! I did read the novel, but the player was at the University of North Carolina in the novel.
