Okay kids I figured I create this topic because we've had some interest in another thread so I didn't want to hijack the initial post.
Lets start this thread this way. State your favorite team from the major sports (I'll also include soccer/football because of our Europeans friends here). From there, we can go on to discuss sports items (like the superbowl, spring training etc...).
Hockey: Toronto Maple Leafs (is there anyone else?)
Football (American): Dallas Cowboys
Baseball: New York Yankees
Basketball: LA Lakers
Soccer/Football: Red Star Belgrade

Schultz, I hope you know our resident Penguin... Brother Aiden. He's really got the inside scoop on the Pens, but I'll let him tell you that. You're sitting pretty with Sydney and Malkin. Why don't you sell them to the Leafs and we'll buy you guys TWO arenas.

^Another comedian!!! Bad enough I've got Bob killing me about the Leafs... no this! LOL
Actually I'm a Cowboy fan living just outside NYC, amongst the Giants faithful. Oh, how I loved watching the Gints fall apart this year.
And who do you support dear sir?
I am with you there sir. The Cowboys truly great. Unfortunately it is difficult living amongst these wretched Giants fans in NY . . . especially since a few weeks ago. Hockey: Dallas Stars Football (American): Dallas Cowboys Baseball: New York Yankees Basketball: Dallas Mavericks Soccer/Football: Arsenal Then to add another important thing, Favourite University Team: Fordham University Favourite University Team that actually matters: Texas A&M University.

I forgot college.
Hoops would be the Tar Heels.
Football would be Ohio State (on account of my best friends brother going there and getting me a sweatshirt and cap).

Hockey: Ottawa Senators. Football: don't watch much.
Baseball: Toronto Blue Jays.

Soccer: don't watch. But I loved playing soccer when I was a kid.

I don't watch other sports games. I tried, but I can't help but notice that the most enjoyable to watch are: Basketball: not really big on teams, but more on the player...so Kevin Garnette's T-Wolves Soccer: World Cup Soccer is awesome...I tend to enjoy Argentina or Brazil, but in Egyptian soccer, I am an "Ahlawi," and you won't understand that unless you're Egyptian (or very familiar with modern Egyptian culture) Baseball: boring to play and watch Football: fun to play, boring to watch Hockey: hardly can see the puck; the fights are enjoyable however (sorry...it seems so intricately part of the game nowadays ) Flipping through the channels one day, and saw this on ESPN (I thought this was a hoax...but it turned out for real..who knew!) http://www.usarps.com/I just couldn't stop laughing. Enjoy. Mina

Hockey: Pittsburgh Penguins (minor league: ECHL Johnstown Chiefs) Football: Pittsburgh Steelers Baseball: I haven't watched baseball (regularly) in years. I got tired of the Pirates saying every year "we've got these 2-3 great players in the minors, they're going to be all-stars when they come up in a couple years!" only to watch the Pirates trade the players away for different guys and start the process all over again. After watching that cycle over and over since the early 90's, I finally gave up. Basketball: Er... Dallas Mavericks I guess. Though I haven't watched basketball regularly in years either. When I liked the Mavericks, they had Jim Jackson, Jamal Mashburn, and Jason Kidd. Ancient history. I thought that Bball was more fun to play than watch. Soccer: I enjoy watching soccer (it's the only thing on at 4am other than informercials anyway ), though I don't follow it closely enough until the World Cup to have any particular favorite.

Geez... all of the Penguin fans...
You guys need to get together with Brother Aiden, who is easily the "head Penguin". I'll let him explain.
Fr. Chris,
Does your congregation know you called American football "real" football? I think it is a Greek Orthodox Church right? If so, try telling rabid Greek football fans that American football is the real deal. LOL

Well Asteriktos I will lend you my team (Red Star Belgrade) and award you "honorary supporter" status. We may no longer have the best team in Europe (we did in 91-92), but we still have the best fans in the world. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYZFVg4vVMYhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SyY1WjK2Bwhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9lgvSWq54k(willfully kept all hooligan vids out - LOL).

aha! always nice to meet a fellow peacock! As if there is anything to cheer for these days. I have thrown myself into the demo for Worldwide Soccer Manager 2007, brought us to a respectable 8th (2 points off 1st). Therefore the logical conclusion is that they should have hired me instead of Dennis Wise. He won't last the season. Why in the world did we hire Terry Venables?? Keeping O'Leary would have been better. Edit: I am not to the point of praying for Leeds (yet...maybe in March), I am merely hoping that "Love thy neighbour" does not apply to Manchester and God happens to be a Leeds United fan.

Arrggh! Don't even mention Olympiakos to me, since they recently beat my team, and since Olympiakos has some fans here I keep hearing about it from one of my chanters!
AEK is my second runner-up favorite, and starting to grow in my affections because at least they have a chance of bringing down "that O Team" and getting my chanter to concentrate on her chanting and less on her razzing of her priest!

Baseball: New York Yankees. Second: Boston Red Sox (I'm from upstate NY, not New York City, so I can get away with that!) Nope, that's like someone saying they like the Yankees and the Cowboys, or that they root for the Redskins first and the Cowboys second, or they like both the Giants and the Eagles. It's almost as bad as someone saying they like the Yankees and Red Sox. It's just not possible. -------------------------------- So Hockey: The NHL is awful to watch in my opinion. The Olympics can be interesting. I can clearly remember watching the USA/USSR game in Lake Placid. When the Czechs won that was cool too. Now I just like to see the Canadians lose. Oh, and go Houston Penguins! Football (Real): The Chiefs because of family, though I donĆ¢âā‰āĀ¢t follow them closely now. IĆ¢âā‰āĀ¢ve always liked the AFC better, even when the NFC handed them their shorts year after year. One of my favorite teams of all time was the Houston Oilers during the Earl Campbell/Bum Philips era. Two teams who I enjoy watching lose under any circumstances are the Cowboys and Raiders. So this was a good year. Baseball: Used to be a big fan. No longer pay attention. TheyĆ¢âā‰āĀ¢re all on drugs. Nobody had a better look (or name) than Rollie Fingers. Cal Ripken is the most overrated player of all time. Basketball: College is much more exciting, though I no longer watch. I actually lost interest in the NBA once the Bulls started winning in the Jordan era. The Pistons/Lakers finals were awesome to watch. Moses Malone I always liked, and the Celtics with Bird and McHale, who couldnĆ¢âā‰āĀ¢t help but like them. Vlade was fun to watch. The NBA seems like a bunch of thugs to me now. Soccer: I actually went to outdoor NASL games as a kid (like when Pele and Beckenbauer came to push their walkers around the field). Then went to indoor NASL and MISL games. Indoor was actually a fairly interesting game to watch. There is little in my opinion less interesting (maybe baseball) than European club play. The World Cup is fun to watch, but I think can be really punctuated by some horrendous officiating and of course with players flopping and diving around like a bunch of harp seals. Watching teams like the Netherlands, Poland or Serbia-Montenegro in the last World Cup made you want to pluck your eyeballs out. Hopefully the African Nations will change the way the game is played, because seeing the nasty and ugly play of the Italians triumph was not good.

When I was a kid, I liked the Red Sox---Babe Ruth used to pitch for the Red Sox, and I loved reading about Ruth and old-time baseball, and the team to like in the first two decades of the 20th century were the Red Sox. But I'm from New York, and by the time I reached the age of 10, the Yankees grabbed hold of my allegiance. I've never really stopped liking Boston---part of it is perhaps because I prefer the city of Boston to New York and part of it is because I have the temperament of a Red Sox fan more than a Yankees fan. Anyway, I can't shake it (had I grown up more downstate than Syracuse, I'm sure some people would have forcibly shaken it from me!). So I root for the Red Sox EXCEPT when they are playing the Yankees, at which time I become as brash and arrogant as any other Yankees fan

But I'm from New York, and by the time I reached the age of 10, the Yankees grabbed hold of my allegiance. And a promising young jedi falls again to darkness. I've never really stopped liking Boston---part of it is perhaps because I prefer the city of Boston to New York and part of it is because I have the temperament of a Red Sox fan more than a Yankees fan. You should have that checked out by a professional practitioner of medicine.

At least he hasn't come out (yet) and said he roots for the Cowboys. Then we would know for sure he needs to be put away for a long, long time some place where he couldn't hurt himself.

Baseball: New York Yankees. Second: Boston Red Sox (I'm from upstate NY, not New York City, so I can get away with that!)
Welkodox is right on this one. It does not matter if you're from Conneticut, upstate, or the moon you cannot get away with that. It's like WWII is going on and you like Churchill. Hitler, though, is a close second. And it's obvious that Hitler is the Red Sox. Embrace the Bombers! or as Steiburnner was quoted (and this is an exact quote mind you) to Roger Clemens, I think this applies here: The Boss: Roger, you do not yet realize your importance. You have only begun to discover your power. Join me, and I will complete your training. With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to Major League Baseball.

part of it is because I have the temperament of a Red Sox fan more than a Yankees fan.
I was never really a big baseball fan while living in Toronto (even though the Jays won two consecutive world series). However, when I moved to NYC and went to a Yankee game (sitting in the bleachers) and that was it... I was convinced into cheering for them. Once they started the pre-game "roll call" I was hooked. So that is how you become a Cowboy and Yankee fan. LOL

So I root for the Red Sox EXCEPT when they are playing the Yankees, at which time I become as brash and arrogant as any other Yankees fan Pshaw, Our arrogance is only exceeded by Boston Fans.

Yeah, that was very similar to me. I never really cared for the Rangers; although, I like the local minor team a bit the Fort Worth Cats (but even that only occur ed after New York), and then went to a Yankees game and was hooked. Now, I won't sit anywhere else but the bleachers (even without the beer). So, in another conflict in my life, I hate New York in the Winter being a Cowboys fan, and love it every other time.

I hope not, that would be below the belt. I've heard it too much lately. Well, to use a similar line as defending the Yankees, when some other team wins as many superbowls as the Cowboys then they can talk.
