PITT won, PSU losing at half time, Pirates losing in the 8th, and Steelers played like bums on Thursday. Sort of meh right now...

Cheer up, Orioles swept the double header yesterday(game 1 i was at), bills are going to win sunday, ravens played fantastic, but UB did lose. Also, Sabres season is right around the corner

Penn State pulled out the win after all.

Pirates lost though... they can't afford too many steps backwards. Looking at the schedules/records of the Pirates and Cards, I can't imagine the Pirates having a shot at overtaking them for the NL central, but they better be careful or someone is going to sneak up and take that wild card spot from them.

The vaunted Seahawk defense allowed San Diego to maintain a greater-than-2-to-1 advantage in time of possession as Philip Rivers carved the Legion of Boom to shreds. Chargers 30, Seahawks 21.

The Ducks play a bad game, killing themselves with penalties, misfiring on offense, allowing six sacks, and allowing WSU's offense to do whatever they wanted.

The WSU Cougars play their best game in their attempt to take down the nation's No. 2 team at home in the Palouse with almost 500 yards of total offense and a defense that sacked Mariota six times.

And yet... The Ducks find a way to survive and remain undefeated, largely due to a Heisman-worthy rushing and passing effort by QB Marcus Mariota to keep drives alive and answer Cougar scores with big passes.

Oregon 38, Washington State 31

Next up, the Ducks get a bye week before a Thursday night home game against Arizona.

And they benefitted from one of the worst officiating errors I've ever seen. Blatant interference and no call. I didn't have a dog in the hunt, but I hate to see a great game effected by poor officiating.

I know the season isn't quite over yet, but since it's nearly over, and I'm thinking about it now....

Pirates outfield of the future...?

I guess this could turn into the best outfield in baseball... or 2 years from now it could be a nearly-complete bust.

*praying to baseball gods*

The baseball gods have been gracious to us thus far, and given their gifts in abundance. During most of the last week and a half the 3 outfield players has been batting at the top of the order (Polanco, Marte, McCutchen). During that time (9 games):

- Marte is batting .381, has 6 runs, 6 RBIs, a HR and a couple stolen bases.
- Polanco is batting .378, has 9 runs, 6 RBIs, and a 13th inning game-winning HR.
- McCutchen is batting .368, has 5 runs, 11 RBIs, 3 HRs and a couple stolen bases.*

So far, so good great. Not that I expect that level of play to continue, but it's a nice start to give them some confidence and a glimpse of what is possible. Now we shall see what happens when the baseball gods remove their favor somewhat and let us experience trials!

*While Cutch had a merely above-average April and May, he has been on fire all of June (17 games), during which he has hit .391 (.466 OBP, .875 SLG, 1.341 OPS), with 7 HRs.

Both Marte and McCutchen had decent seasons, but Polanco struggled after the short hot streak at the start.

Polanco - 283 at bats, 47 R, 9 doubles, 0 triples, 7 HRs, 33 RBIs, 13 SB, .237 AVG, .310 OBP, .347 SLG, .657 OPS, 0.0 WAR
McCutchen - 531 at bats, 85 R, 37 doubles, 6 triples, 24 HRs, 76 RBIs, 17 SB, .313 AVG, .408 OBP, .540 SLG, .948 OPS, 6.4 WAR
Marte - 473 at bats, 70 R, 27 doubles, 6 triples, 13 HRs, 54 RBIs, 27 SB, .290 AVG, .356 OBP, .455 SLG, .811 OPS, 4.9 WAR

And the stats of Cutch from the previous two years...

2013 - McCutchen - 853 at bats, 97 R, 38 doubles, 5 triples, 21 HRs, 84 RBIs, 27 SB, .317 AVG., .404 OBP, .508 SLG, .912 OPS, 8.2 WAR
2012 - McCutchen - 593 at bats, 107 R, 29 doubles, 6 triples, 31 HRs, 96 RBIs, 20 SB, .327 AVG., .400 OBP, .553 SLG, .953 OPS, 7.0 WAR

His last at bat in his last home game, and how does he go out? With a bang, of course! He spanks the first pitch he sees for a single to right field to plate the winning run. This after nearly hitting a home run in his first at bat of the game. That's why Derek Jeter is truly the Captain. ;D

If Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is drafted in the NFL 2015 Draft, will he turn out to be a bust like the 6 Oregon QBs drafted before him?

Note: Dennis Dixon is 2-1 as a starter but for all practical purposes, he's a bust.

In other news, the Harbaugh brothers have been mentioned as replacements for Michigan coach Brady Hoke, who's under fire after losing 3 games in September for the first time in the program's lengthy history.  I don't know if either Harbaugh wants to give up successful coaching careers in the NFL for a chance of coaching at Michigan.

Staying in the Big 10, Ohio St. is a 7.5 pt favorite over Maryland in their game on Saturday.  Ohio St. has outscored opponents 116-28 in the last 2 games following a loss to Virginia Tech.  Maryland is 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the Big 10 in their inaugural Big 10 season after leaving the Atlantic Coast Conference.  Even though I'm no fan of Ohio St., I'd like to see Ohio St. put a 70-3 thumping on the Terps - although the Terps played a close game with West Virginia earlier in the season.

FCC unanimously votes to eliminate sports blackout rules

The FCC today unanimously voted to end its sports blackout rules nearly four decades after they were first implemented in 1975. Despite stiff objections from the NFL, the Commission has put an end to the rules that barred cable and satellite providers from airing games blacked out on local broadcast stations because they failed to sell out. But it only ends the government's rules. The NFL still has its own, private blackout rules in place with broadcasters like FOX and CBS, and those may still prevent fans from watching local games when tickets remain at the box office...

Through 4 of 8 telecasts, losing teams are averaging 11 points per game.  The Minnesota Vikings didn't help matters by scoring 10 points in their blowout loss against the Green Bay Packers.

One game ahead of the A's. We made it to the playoffs after beating the wild card; the A's didn't. We officially did better than them this year. I hope we win the World Series again.

Congrats to Ole Miss. They played a great game and deserved the win. Tough loss for my Crimson Tide, but we gave it away with too many penalties and a costly fumble. A sad day for BAMA, but I'm happy for the state of Mississippi and for all the Ole Miss and State fans. This day lived up to the hype, and the good people of Mississippi have a right to celebrate and be proud. I hope that the Tide can bounce back and still have a great season. There's a lot of football still left to be played. This was a classic SEC battle that will be celebrated forever by the Rebel fans, and rightly so. I'm still proud of my Crimson Tide. Even BAMA can't win them all.  Enjoy this one Ole Miss. You earned it.

Giants and Nationals locked in a pitching duel in DC. 1-1 in the 17th. According to the box score, the Giants had their potential winning run thrown out at home in the 9th. With this game, the fans got two for the price of one.

For the first time in 17 occurrences, Ole Miss and Mississippi St. each defeat a team in the AP Top 10.  Ole Miss defeated Alabama while Mississippi St. defeated Texas A&M.

There goes the Beltway Series with the O's - even though the Nats are down 2-0.

Is Game 3 in SF?  If so, the Nats are toast.
