And then there's Jameis Winston joining Brett Favre on a list of their own: each of the two QB's threw his first NFL pass for a TD by the other team. :P

He certainly did, but he will also be remembered as a bit of an underachiever precisely for his tendency to take unnecessary risks. Favre could have been the best QB ever if he didn't throw so many damn interceptions! I guess that first pass was kind of a bad omen. (It was also the first of what is thought to be an NFL record 35 career pick-sixes thrown. Source: http://www.footballperspective.com/most-pick-sixes-thrown-in-nfl-history/)

yesterday's MACtion:

Toledo over #18 Arkansas

BGSU shellacked Maryland

Ohio beat MAC traitor and C USA Favorite Marshall.

Meanwhile, the SEC doesn't look so hot this season.  I thought last year would shut people up about it, but with 10 preseason ranked teams, I guess not.  Hopefully this is the year I don't have to hear as much about SEC football.

Western Michigan played MSU pretty well.  Let's see how Northern Illinois (who I say is still the team to beat in the MAC despite W. Michigan good, but young recruiting classes) and Western play OSU.  I wouldn't be surprised if one of the teams played OSU fairly close.   I wouldn't be surprised if Northern was the 3rd  toughest opponent on OSU's schedule, assuming Penn State is a bust.

fyi:

Nick Saban and Gary Pinkle, former UT coaches.  Urban Meyer, BGSU coach.

And then there's BYU's Tanner Mangum completing a desperation lob pass to score the winning TD for the second straight week! (Who cares that the Cougars scored on a pick-six only a few seconds later. They wouldn't have even had the opportunity for a pick-six if they were still behind.)

I doubt they can do this, but If BYU runs the rest of their schedule, they should get in the playoffs easily.  That's a tough schedule.  I'd rather see Boise (or a MAC team, of course) in there, but that would be interesting.  The question is can BYU suffer 1 loss and get in?  I dont think Boise State can get in the playoffs now, as their schedule is a bit weaker, but they can still get a new years bid.

The Cubs have just won 5 of their last 6 games against the Pirates and Cardinals, the two teams above them in the NL Central standings and therefore the teams most likely to face the Cubs and their ace pitcher Jake Arrieta in a one-game wild card playoff. Tough day for MAC fans.  What could've have been one of the biggest days in MAC history turned out to be near misses all around.

Fortunately my beloved Rockets TCB, but it took them two overtimes in the glass bowl to put away The Cyclones.  The Bobcats are also off to a 3-0 start, and face Big Ten West contender Minnesota next week who struggled with MAC basketball powerhouse (but football doormat) Kent State.

The big heart break was Northern Illinois losing to OSU.  I knew they would play OSU well, I said all year that would be one of their 4 toughest regular season games, but they surprised me.  Northern has to play BC and their elite defense next week.  A one loss Northern Illinois should be able to get a new years bowl.

As for the Big Ten / ACC challenge.  I think the Big Ten came out looking good being that they were only favored in one game.  Nebraska almost pulled off a miracle, Iowa did pull off a miracle (57 yard field goal at the buzzer to beat Pitt).

The West is going to be an exciting race.  I guess you almost have to pick Northwestern, or maybe Iowa as the favorites now.  But my brain tells me Wisconsin, or maybe even Nebraska will win it.

Too bad BYU lost, I'd have liked to see Michigan play.a top.10 BYU.  How many Mormons will Michigan lose to this year?

Let's see how Ball State and the Ohio Bobcats fair against Northwestern and Minnesota next week.  One of them could pull off the upset.  Western Michigan will not look as good against OSU as Northern Illinois, but they may keep the game interesting for a few quarters.

In more Catholic News:

Notre Dame looks good.  That Kizer looks decent, the offense is still potent...but that defense is looking fantastic.  Now that Georgia Tech runs the triple option, there may be seasons where Notre Dame has to defend against 3 times a year.  That's kind of funny.

Ole Miss beat Alabama (sorry, Gebre).

5 turnovers. Horrible play calling. Poor QB decisions. A fluke play. And an Ole Miss TD that should have been flagged for a penalty. But the bottom line is that Ole Miss beat us, and we have no excuses. In spite of the fact that we had more time of possession and more total offensive yards, Ole Miss was the better team Saturday night. They deserved to win. Congrats to their team and their fans. We lost to them last year as well, and yet we went on to win the SEC and compete in the College Football Playoffs while Ole Miss finished their season with a 9-4 record and a 42-3 loss to TCU in the Peach Bowl. So it's a long season, and anything can happen. RTR!

This week in NCAAF:

1) The MAC is only favored in one game (Toledo over Arkansas St.).  This could be a brutal week for the MAC. Nevertheless BGSU, Ball St, Ohio, and Northern Illinois are capable of pulling off the upset.  Unfortunately, I don't think Northern matches up well with BC.  Western Michigan may give OSU a decent game, I have my doubts though...the Buckeyes are going to be motivated this week.

2) One of the best matchups of the week may be today.  Cincinnati vs Memphis.  This may be for the inside track on a midmajor getting a new year bowl berth.

3) Michigan vs BYU. Georgia Tech at Duke. Indiana at Wake. TCU at Texas Tech.  USC @ASU are the best games. The game of the day : UCLA@Arizona.  My picks without the line:  Michigan, Georgia Tech, Wake, TCU, USC.  I think I'll pick Arizona over UCLA.

My upset pick: Arkansas over Texas A&M.

3) It's nice to see Michigan State at number 2, but I think when they play Ohio State they will have one loss.  They have a tough schedule.  I also don't think Notre Dame can go undefeated or only have one loss with their schedule, and I don't see Ol Miss running the table. I have no faith in Clemson.

My early playoff projection:  OSU, Oregon, LSU,  Oklahoma (TCU looks shaky, and beat up).  I'm still half tempted to pick Bama, a two loss good SEC team can get into the picture.  While I hope 0 SEC teams make the grade, that won't happen...I just don't want to see two SEC teams in.

In baseball news:

I can't talk, my beloved Pirates and this NL central race has had me on edge all month.

Be careful with those acronyms. In my neck of the woods OSU means Oregon State, NOT Ohio State. I don't think you mean to say that the Beavers are actually going to make the playoffs this year.

If they can beat Nevada, they may be a dark horse contender for the MAC west. Nevada has a solid football program, even if this is an off year for them.  I know buffalo has been capable of putting up some competitive football programs in recent years.

Oh that's happening on Saturday, that's a marquee game.  The West Coast is going to have some exciting football this year.  Maybe the best.  I don't think Utah will match up well though against The Ducks, even if Utah is a solid team. I think that game will be over by.the time the 4th quarter starts.

A two loss PAC 12 team may be able to sneak in the playoffs, that's a tough conference.

Whoa seriously?

What teams do you follow biro? I'm very limited in my knowledge on European teams that aren't named Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Man U, etc.

I wish it was more popular in the States, I could watch it over any other popular Sport here.

I like Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United (yep  ;) ), Paris St. Germain, Feyenoord (although I haven't been able to watch them in a while), and in the U.S. league, I guess I'll root for Orlando, since they used to have a team in Tampa but they don't now. I also watch the Mexican league on one of the Spanish language channels. I haven't picked a favorite team of them yet.

My upset pick: Arkansas over Texas A&M.

No way.  The same Arkansas who got beat by Toledo at home and lost to Texas Tech?   Not going yo happen.  I hope you didn't place too much of a bet on that outcome.

Northern Illinois played Ohio State to the wire, and Western Michigan, and Air Force played the Spartans (who beat Oregon) close.  Either way even with the spread that is not a game I would bet on, I'm just talking about fun picks.  These are not games I'm betting on, it's probably not appropriate to talk about spreads on.this site.

That's a pure "gut" feeling on trying to pick a big upset, I was half tempted to pick Texas Tech over TCU, who would you pick?  I haven't even watched the aggies play (though they have proven themselves with a good out of conference play).

Should be a close game. I think your Dawgs will pull it out though. We're just not a great team this year. Hoping our defense will give us a chance. But our QB makes too many mental mistakes. And I can't stand Lame Kiffin. But maybe we'll still find a way to win.

Roll Tide!

I'm nervous. The Dawgs are always contenders for at least a chunk of the season. Cant think of a more consistent (read: consistently slightly above average) team. We always blow it somewhere a long the way, though. We finally have a decent defense again, and with our running backs, we are expecting big things this year. But ive been a fan long enough to know that even if we do when this saturday, we will probably just choke next weekend in Knoxville.

I wont be holding my breath, but I am looking forward to playing the Tide again. I still think the SEC championship against each other was one of the best football games ive ever seen. Hoping for better results this time! :)

Yeah, that was one move that really puzzled me. Kiffin must have some serious dirt on Nick Saban to be able to pull in that job!
God bless!

In typical classless fashion, the Dawgs were woofing prior to kickoff.
http://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/alabama-football/video-alabama-georgia-fight/
But they were quickly and thoroughly silenced by the Crimson deluge that flooded the Sanford Stadium hedges. The Tide ROLLED in and the Dawgs whimpered away with their tails tucked between their legs. (And to all the BAMA haters out there: Please keep writing us off. We love it when you underestimate us.)

ROLL TIDE!!!

Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer just became the sixth pitcher in Major League history to throw two no-hitters in one season (Roy Halladay's no-no in the 2010 postseason counting as his second of that year) by no-hitting the Mets today. (He would have had a perfect game if his 3rd baseman hadn't committed a throwing error in the 6th inning.) He also struck out 17--if he had struck out the final batter he faced instead of forcing him to pop out, he would have joined Tom Seaver as only the second pitcher ever to strike out ten straight hitters in one ML game.

I've been so nervous all week about the BAMA vs. UGA game that I forgot to brag on my son. Zion was wonderful in his JV game this past Monday night. He caught a touchdown pass, ran for a touchdown, and threw a 25 yard TD pass in Jim Hill's 35-0 victory over Canton. He starts at wide receiver on the JV team and is the starting kicker on the varsity. Keep him in your prayers. His goal is to play for the Crimson Tide in a few years.  :)
