England-Italy today. Anyone going to watch the game?

I'll be listening to something else during the early part of it, but I should be able to catch all of the second half on ESPN.

Greece has only scored 2 goals in their entire World Cup history while giving up more than 10.  Losing 0-3 to Colombia didn't help....

Congrats to Jimmy Rollins! Smiley

Jimmy Rollins sets Phillies' hit record

Jimmy Rollins added yet another milestone to his 15-year career as he became the Philadelphia Phillies' all-time hit leader with No. 2,235 coming against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. Rollins laced a 3-1 single to right field off Edwin Jackson in the fifth inning to pass Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt atop the hit list for the 132-year-old franchise...

In 15 years with the Phillies, the 5-foot-8 shortstop has won four Gold Gloves, made three All-Star teams and was the 2007 NL MVP. He was a member of the club's 2008 World Series championship team. Rollins already tops Philadelphia's doubles list with 466, and he is in the top 10 of nearly every offensive category in club history. He is second in extra-base hits (782), total bases (3,540), games (2,015), at-bats (8,331), and third in steals (436), runs (1,281) and triples (109). Rollins is one of 19 players in major league history with at least 400 doubles, 100 triples and 200 home runs. He is fourth all-time with 46 leadoff homers.

I'd like to see a 30 pt blow out win by the Spurs in Game 5.

Congratulations San Antonio Spurs for winning their 5th Championship in 15 years.

It was a 33 pt blow out win by the Spurs - in the last 41 minutes.   Wink

I'm quite impressed. I haven't followed basketball much since the 90s, but the Spurs strike me as a team largely composed or senior citizens, and they still beat those other people.

Give Pop credit for this: Knowing that his Big 3 of Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili are all getting old and not as able to play as many minutes as they did in their primes, he makes adjustments.
  • Develop a deeper bench to take on more minutes so the Big 3 don't have to play as many.
  • Develop a better offense to compensate for the (slight) loss of defensive athleticism.
  • Preach the importance of selfless, team offense to compensate for the Big 3's loss of one-on-one athleticism.
  • Giving up his disdain for the 3-pointer and encouraging his team to fire away from long distance whenever they had the open looks.

And yet their series MVP, Kawhi Leonard, was the youngest NBA Finals MVP since....

his teammate, Tim Duncan, in 1999.

Kawhi Leonard: Scored 20+ points in only 3 regular-season games this year. Scored 20+ points in each of the final three NBA Finals games, and this while drawing King James as his primary defensive assignment.

CONGRATS TO THE SPURS!!! I’ve never seen a greater display of true team basketball on any level than I witnessed from San Antonio in these Finals. Not only did they beat the two-time defending NBA Champions, but they beat them thoroughly. The Spurs have tremendous depth. Their players are humble, unselfish, and they conduct themselves with dignity and class. They are lead by arguably the best NBA coach in the history of the game. They play with flair, passion, and confidence without forsaking teamwork and fundamentals. Anyone who truly understands the game of basketball will have to appreciate what they accomplished and how they accomplished it. And anyone who thinks the Spurs style is “boring” obviously doesn’t know the first thing about basketball.

If you prefer individualism over teamwork, if you like braggadocio over humility and class, if you like manufactured championships and instant success rather than consistency and hard work over a long duration of time, then you probably hate the Spurs and you are angry, miserable, and bitter tonight.

I think Lebron James and the Heat showed class in defeat. I was glad to see that.

By the way, I just heard Lebron refusing to commit to staying with the Heat for the years to come. He’s a great player and a nice guy, but once again he shows weakness rather than strength. You left Cleveland to manufacture a NBA “dream team” and boasted that you would win 8 NBA Championships. Now your team gets destroyed by San Antonio and you’re considering jumping ship once again. Another weak move, Lebron. Another weak move. Why not declare unequivocally that you’re committed to Miami and that you will make good on your promise to win 8 NBA titles with the Heat?

And remember San Antonio Spurs, like Commissioner Adam Silver said: “You can hang your heads high.” (This new NBA commissioner is a joke. What a buffoon.)

Best comment from Tim Duncan after the game: “Don’t listen to the media.”

If only you would show more class in watching.

Always looking for the chance to stick it to LeBron, aren't you? That's what makes you classless, Gebre.

And remember San Antonio Spurs, like Commissioner Adam Silver said: “You can hang your heads high.”
Yeah, that one made me laugh, too. laugh I don't know if you caught it, though, but Silver actually said that to the Heat.

Congrats to the US soccer (world) football team.

Also,

Tony Gwynn's incredible numbers

My favorite stat from the article: "Finally, what does it mean to have piled up a .338 batting average over a 20-year career, over 9,288 at-bats? It means Tony Gwynn would have had to go 0-for-his-next-1,183 to get his average to fall under .300"

Tony Gwynn only struck out 494 times in his major league career.  In comparison, Orioles slugger Chris Davis struck out 199 times in 2013.

One reason I love books so much is that they don’t break your heart like sports do. I have so many great books to read, but the game is on. Why do I forsake the comfort of these faithful friends for the agony and betrayal of my favorite teams? Why do we fall in love with those who have no love for us? Who knows the answers to these human mysteries? I guess that’s why there are so many books written about sports.

Well, technically, they and Spain do each have one match left in group play. They're just eliminated from qualifying for anything beyond that.

Pirates outfield of the future...?

I guess this could turn into the best outfield in baseball... or 2 years from now it could be a nearly-complete bust.

*praying to baseball gods*

The baseball gods have been gracious to us thus far, and given their gifts in abundance. During most of the last week and a half the 3 outfield players has been batting at the top of the order (Polanco, Marte, McCutchen). During that time (9 games):

- Marte is batting .381, has 6 runs, 6 RBIs, a HR and a couple stolen bases.
- Polanco is batting .378, has 9 runs, 6 RBIs, and a 13th inning game-winning HR.
- McCutchen is batting .368, has 5 runs, 11 RBIs, 3 HRs and a couple stolen bases.*

So far, so good great. Not that I expect that level of play to continue, but it's a nice start to give them some confidence and a glimpse of what is possible. Now we shall see what happens when the baseball gods remove their favor somewhat and let us experience trials!

*While Cutch had a merely above-average April and May, he has been on fire all of June (17 games), during which he has hit .391 (.466 OBP, .875 SLG, 1.341 OPS), with 7 HRs.

I think it was last season that Josh was in a TV promo commercial for the Pirates, and I remember thinking, 'Ok, the guy is really nice, and he hustles, and has a good personality, but he's not exactly someone who is going to produce much.' He's done well this year though, especially of late. Now if only he could play shortstop...  (apparently he played 31 games at SS at the AAA level, I wonder if they could try him out  as an experiment...)

A pitching line for the ages: Yesterday, June 18, 2014, Dodgers lefthander Clayton Kershaw pitched a no-hitter against the Colorado Rockies. In that outing, Kershaw logged 15 strikeouts without walking a batter, all this on a sum total of 107 pitches. The only thing that kept him from throwing a perfect game was a shortstop's throwing error on an otherwise routine grounder. Some have ranked this the most dominant no-no in league history. (The only pitcher since 1900 to strike out more batters in a no-hitter was Nolan Ryan, who struck out 17 and 16 in two of his league record seven no-nos, but he also walked a few batters in each of those two starts.)

Perfect games and no hitters are in a league of their own; however, facing the minimum 27 batters in a 9 inning game is an impressive feat as well....

Kershaw faced 28.

From the videos I've watched of Kershaw's gem, I have one word for his slow curveball: FILTHY! Shocked

US-Portugal: 2-2

The US has a good chance to make it to the quarter-finals.

It annoys me to no end how much the pirates wear the black jerseys.

White at home, and grey on the road. Simple and easy.

Heck, wouldnt be as big of a deal if they didnt wear that idiotic alt hat, and instead wore the normal simple non outlined athletic gold P that theyve been wearing since 1948

I suppose I am lucky to only be listening in that regard.

In other 'Burgh news, Crosby won a bunch of awards, and the Bucs sent Tabata down. And the Pirates are up in the game right now, and might get above .500 for the first time in over 2 months. Seems like a decent night.

Greece makes it to the knockout round of the World Cup for the first time in ... history... after their 2-1 win over Ivory Coast.

Wonderful for Greece! I am happy for them, even though I was pulling for the Ivory Coast. That penalty was suspect, but nevertheless, a historic win for the Spartans!
