Something to think about: Even should the Heat lose Game 5, in the 2-3-2 format, the team playing Games 6 & 7 at home has come back from a 2-3 deficit to win the series about 50% of the time. Should Miami win Game 5, though, I'm not aware that a team has ever won Games 6 and 7 on the road after falling behind 2-3.

duncan is better than kobe

I like Tim Duncan much more than Kobe. However, I don't think it's a fair comparison. They play different positions and do different things. So, as far as skills, it's apples and oranges. However, I think Duncan is a better team leader. Choosing between both players at their primes, I'd choose to build my team around Tim Duncan rather than Kobe. He's much more unselfish and less egotistical. Duncan has brought stability and consistency to that franchise in a way that is remarkably rare in today's professional climate.

Selam
FWIW, I consider Tim Duncan the best power forward of all time. One of the best low post defenders ever, and also a very good scorer. It shouldn't come as any surprise that the 1999 San Antonio Spurs defense that set the record for lowest field goal percentage against was anchored by the Admiral, David Robinson, and the Big Fundamental, Tim Duncan.

Yeah, we agree on this one Peter. Duncan is a unique combination of a 4 and a 5. Defends the rim like a center, and has a post up game as well as a finesse midrange game.

If I had to pick my all time starting 5 by position:

1- Magic
2- Jordan
3- Bird (as much as I hate to do it)
4- Duncan
5- Olajuwon (The center is the toughest one to decide. A good argument could be made for lots of others, but I just personally like Olajuwon's ability and both ends of the floor.)

If I had to pick my all time 5 regardless of position:

1- Magic
2- Jordan
3- Bird
4- Lebron
5- Duncan

Selam

Coach?

Good question. I'd probably go with Red Auerbach.

Wade and James can sleep the first 3 games of the series and combine for 65 the next day.  18 turnovers by the Spurs didn't help and 7 blocked shots by the Heat was incredible.  Ginobili & Parker are done.  As much as I hate to say this, the Heat will make sure James and Wade repeat their Game 4 performances in Games 5 and 6.

The Heat finally played big boy basketball tonight. Out hustled the Spurs and played aggressive on both ends of the floor. Duane Wade affirmed what I said yesterday about Lebron overanalyzing things when he said after the game that the Heat didn't overthink things tonight, they just went out there and played ball.

Disappointed to see Tim Duncan get out hustled tonight. That's a rare thing for him.

Duane Wade certainly silenced his critics tonight. Great game. Don't know why the Spurs allowed him to get into the lane so much.

I think the Spurs may have set a finals record for having the most blocked shots in a single game (their own that is.) Good grief Splitter, try a head fake once in a while! Gee.

One thing about this series is that it has proven to be completely unpredictable. Who would have guessed that Garry Neal would have had a bigger impact so far than Birdman?

I have no idea how to predict game 5. Both teams have proven that they know how to make the right adjustments and bounce back from a loss. Lebron and Wade hit their full stride tonight, so we'll see if they can keep it up.

Congrats to Miami on an excellent game.

Go Spurs!

Y'all remember how the University of Louisville won the NCAA Tournament? Well we're going to the World Series, too! And that's on top of winning the Sugar Bowl in football and reaching the championship game of the Women's Basketball Tournament.

Louisville clearly has the best athletic program of any college in America.
Heh, heh! Maybe my Oregon State Beavers will meet your Cardinals in the winners' bracket Game 7. GO BEAVS!
Meh, I guess it's in the losers' bracket that they meet.

But historically, teams who win game 3, they usually win the series. Look it up, I believe it's 92% chance of the Spurs winning.

I gotta have my Gebre moment here

I don't think Lebron has any desire to win this series. He doesn't have that look of determination like he did last season.

Also Miami's interior defense is so bad it makes it look like he Spurs have 5 Roy Hibberts on the court

I've never understood the whole lack of motivation thing, especially when people talk about the other team trash talking or not respecting you or whatever and that firing you up. Wut?

- Money/next contract
- Good press/publicity/popularity
- Legacy/history
- Professionalism
- People/organization counting on you, with maybe even their jobs on the line
- Competitive drive/wanting to beat someone at something
- Just wanting to be good at what you do

These aren't enough to get you motivated?

Yes, it does. Game 3 is immaterial now. The way the series stands now, the Spurs lead 3-2 with Games 6 (& 7) in Miami. That's all that matters.

Nevermind the raw genetic / constitutional competitiveness everyone must have to have gotten to this point.

'Sides I think motivation is a bit spurious in itself anyhow. It's one of those more cog-sci tautologies I have trouble believing in.

since the 2-3-2 format, the Game 3 winner has won the Finals 92.3 % of the time.

ok so what are your bets now orthonorm?
OK, Achronos, since you like to cite this 92.3% stat so often, where the hell did you get it?

Again, where did you get this stat?

BTW, you do realize there's a huge difference between winning Game 3 to go up 3-0 and winning Game 3 to avoid falling down 0-3? I notice that your 92.3% analysis doesn't account for this.

Again, since the 2-3-2 format, the winner of Game 3 has won the Finals 92% of the time.
Again, where did you get this stat?

BTW, you do realize there's a huge difference between winning Game 3 to go up 3-0 and winning Game 3 to avoid falling down 0-3? I notice that your 92.3% analysis doesn't account for this.

Handicapping even with modern computational tools is no picnic.

You can imagine what drives the mind boggling derivative market, once you listen to the stat dropping enough by professional sportscasters. Baseball is always good for a laugh in this regard.

You know, you can do the research yourself at basketball-reference.com without eating what someone else force feeds you. Besides, we're done with Game 3. It simply doesn't matter anymore who won Game 3. We're now into Game 6. Do try to keep up.

Here's a stat for you, Achronos: Whoever wins Game 7 wins the series 100% of the time.

I still don't understand why you are being so flippantly dismissive. Just putting a stat out there,  you can do the math yourself.

Now I'm onto to the next post...
