Interesting post that proves that--in the Balkans--reality is stranger than fiction: Mehmet Sokolovic--Serbian convert to Islam and vizier of the Sultan, as well as a cousin or brother of  the Patriarch of Pec, Sokolovic-- pressured the  Sultan into resurrecting the Patriarchate for the good of non-Muslim Serbs.

Both Croat and Serbian nationalists honor Mehmet Sokolovic as an ethnic hero.

Salaam. If you haven't yet, I encourage you to read William Dalrymple's article linked to my site, on Christianity and Islam. He mentions similar Western converts to al-Islam who were leaders: IIRC the Turkish admiral who led the fleet at Lepanto was in fact Italian.
