The entire East and the papal legates acknowledged Constantinople IV of 879/880 to have ecumenical status. But when the pope (John VIII) read the acts he excommunicated Photius. I have read from EO sources that the Latin church accepted this council as ecumenical for several centuries. QUESTION: Did the pope himself, or a later pope for that matter, ever confirm the council?? It does not seem that John VIII would have.

Clarification - Pope John VIII accepted Photius before the council. Then AFTER the council, upon reading the acts, he excommunicated Photius. This is the information on NewAdvent. It might be disputed though.

Yeah, totally disputed.  The Photian Schism by Francis Dvornik is a good revisionist work on this subject. It's out of print but you can get it via interlibrary loan.
