Update on dad.
« on: December 30, 2006, 06:27:12 AM »
Well, he's been moved from Maury Regional to the VA in Nashville there near the Vanderbilt Campus.

The doctor's have given a "no-return" status.

My dad's in a vegetative state.  His higher brain functions simply aren't there.  Apparently, his extreme double pneumonia combined with a Code and a very low blood pressure caused oxygen deprivation to his brain.

So, they've stated that he's going to be like this until he falls asleep in God.  They're wanting to schedule a "family meeting" with us to give us our options, which are pretty much limited to A) Home Care which won't happen, or B) Nursing Home care, which is usually worse than just throwing your loved one into a dumpster.

Keep in mind, there's no plug to pull, so that's not even an issue.  His lower brain and vitals are stable.  His kidneys work, his lungs breathe, his heart beats, his stomach digests food.

But, he (according to the doctors) doesn't think or dream or have any type of consciousness.

So, I guess Fr Boutros and I have a bit to talk about.

It's an awful situation, and I've personally been in a similar one, where my only prayer for five months became: "Take her Lord, or give her back to me!"
Having worked in Palliative Care for 4 years, I've seen enough to know with certainty that there is a type of human consciousness which transcends cerebral function. As a Christian, I call it the Soul. An Atheist collegue of mine at the time called it "Non-Neural Reactability", which I suppose is Atheist language for "Soul".
You're in my heartfelt prayers.
If you're living a happy life as a Christian, you're doing something wrong.

Thank you for your prayers.

I suppose that's why he opens his eyes and looks around.  I think he's still in there.  His body looks awful, though.  This is my dad, of course.  When I think of him, he's like, 10 feet tall and 3 times as wide as me, and built like a solid hickory redneck.  Now, his face is emaciated, and the muscles in his arms have atrophied.

It's like a prison of flesh.

Gabriel,

I'm sorry on your behalf. This is indeed a very heavy Cross to bear, as I and others have also had to have our turn at this Cross.

I know this may just seem like I'm being hopelessly optimistic, but I mean this in all seriousness: somehow, in this situation, there is a blessing from God. This blessing may be hidden right now, but someday the reason you were given this period in your life by God will become apparent.

In the meantime, my prayers go to you and your family, including your father. Please keep us informed on things, and know that there are people on this site concerned about you and those around you.

+Fr. Chris

Thanks Fr Chris.

That's pretty much what is keeping me composed.

I've put my trust in He who buckled Orion's belt, and caused the Earth to spin.

It's a lot harder on my sister, though.  She's an agnostic.

Job is a good read, right now.

Lord have mercy and I will pray for you, your family and your father. It is indeed, a heavy cross to carry on your shoulders.
