I'm not sure if normal Orthodox parishes do this. In Protestantism, and I think in some Catholic parishes, this is done on the Thursday before Holy Friday (though it's done technically on Holy Friday according to liturgical time). I always found the foot washing service to be a profound thing, and was let down that--from what it seems--most Orthodox don't participate in this practice. I know that bishops and monks sometimes perform foot washings as a sign of humility, but other than that, I'm not sure who does and does not continue this practice. Btw, I've collected many online icons of the foot washing of the apostles if anyone hasn't seen one of this kind before  |

I don't know how it is in the other Oriental Orthodox Churches, but in our Indian Church, the Holy Washing is done by bishops (I've never heard of any prohibitions on priests doing this in regular parishes, but I've never heard of priests doing it at all, only bishops) at Vespers for Good Friday (i.e., Thursday evening). The Liturgy of Holy Thursday is celebrated in the morning.

In the Coptic Church on Thursday the priest makes the sign of the cross on each male's right food (ankle) and on each woman's forhead, after blessing the water.

In the Coptic Orthodox Church, foot washing is done both on Maundy Thursday, and on the Feast of the Apostles.

I know this is a bit late (I have a real problem keeping up with current events, it would seem  ) but just wanted to say the only place I've ever seen it done is at Jordanville, where they act it out as the last supper, with Vl. Met. Lavr washinh the feet of 12 priests (if not enough priests, then the eldest deacons also) while a deacon reads from the gosple, basicly narrating the event. At the end the eldest priest (in this case it was Arhemandrite Iov) and the bishop act out the argument between Jesus and Peter-Simon. It's very humbling to see Vl. Met. Lavr getting on his knees before the priests to wash their feet. It's done on Holy Thursday after Liturgy. If anyone ever gets the chance to go to Jordanville for this service, it's well worth it (Just as any other service there is  ) Ania |
