Hi everyone,

We have been chanting the Advent Paraklesis in preparation for our Lord's Nativity for the past two weeks.  When we have come to the canon, the notes say that instead of chanting the irmos for each ode, we instead begin with "Glory to thee, O God, glory to thee!" and then straight chant each of the troparia.  Does anyone know why omitting the irmoi is prescribed?  Many thanks.

If the notes also say to chant all the katavasiai together at the end of Canticle Eight rather than at the end of each Canticle, then I'd say you are using the 1888 Greek version of the Typicon ("Typikon of the Great Church of Christ") revised by Protopsaltis George Violakis and approved by the Oecumenical Patriarchate for use in Parish Churches. It has many other ill advised changes, but unfortunately, the Greek Church is stuck with it for the time being.

For comparison sake can you tell us which irmoi and tone the canon is in? I just looked at the copy of the service I have and it starts off in Tone 2 with

If the Irmoi are not of the festal season, which often times they are not, then they are skipped.  it is the same reason used for skipping the Eirmoi of the Paraklesis to the Theotokos during the first 14 days of August - the Irmoi have nothing to do with the Theotokos, so they are not chanted.

Yes, it is that canon in Tone 2.

That sounds like a reasonable explanation.

OzGeorge,

We are an Antiochian parish and I'm pretty sure that our Fr. Bishop +BASIL has directed us NOT to use the revisions of the Typicon made in the 1880s.  He used to publish Typicon notes for our diocese but now has his Protopsaltis do it and I'm pretty sure that one of the sources he uses is the Mikron Typikon published by HTM.  Does that contain the revisions?
