My Godson is in Grade 2 and his Catholic friends are about to have their First Confession.  I've read that in Orthodoxy, we should also start confession around age 7 (Grade 2). My questions is this: How do you parishes prepare children for their first confession or do they do anything? Is there any particular books they use? Do they have a simpler service that they use? Any experience would be helpful.

Most of this stuff is under the auspices of the priest. 

If we are to follow the "spiritual father" pradigm the child should start having a spiritual father now.  This spiritual father will help make decisions like books, etc.  with the child, parents and ESPECIALLY Godparents. 

This is one model/idea to follow. 

I would say start with the Bible and prayer-books.  If you can get any of that going then the child is doing GREAT!  (reading the bible and praying)
