With the massive changes underway at OC.net I thought I'd make a topic for us to discuss new changes.

I really like the membermap feature.  I wish more of us would try it out.

The new smilies are okay...I'm still waiting for Robert to incorporate some of my suggestions.

Any problems or comments on the new features?

I hope this isn't taken as a negative comment, it's just meant to be something for consideration.

I don't mind any of the new additions, and think that some of them are especially good (the membermap, more threads listed on the "recent posts" part of the main forum page, etc.). Some of these changes will make the forum more attractive. However, some of the changes will definately put-off at least a few potential members. Some of the new smileys, and other additions, provide a much more light-hearted atmosphere. There's nothing wrong with that per se, but at the same time, such additions will perhaps keep more serious minded people from posting on or frequenting the forum. I think that Priests and the more mature academic types will be less likely to find this forum attractive with some of the new additions (this wouldn't be the case for all priests and mature academics, of course). Some people like to have a very serious tone when discussing theology, or discussing history, or even discussing topics such as abortion. I guess it's a case of not being able to please everyone. It's a matter of who you are trying to attract to the forum. It's currently, for the most part, people in their 20's who are serious about their faith, but light-hearted at the same time. If that's who you, for the most part, hope to attract to here, then I think things are perfect Smiley

The "You've got mail baby, yeah" thing gets really old, really quick when you have a PM. So I'm not a big fan of that, being it does not stop until you reply to all your new PMs! But otherwise Robert did a good job fo upgrading theis place.

Well, Paradosis, that is why I think we need this thread.

What kind of influence do we want to have as a community?  Also, this will give constructive feedback to Robert and others who help with design/content of the site.

I personally really hate that "you've got mail baby" thing repeating over and over again. Maybe once would be nice.

The 'you got mail feature' should be pitched. I don't think the grace points are a good idea either.

As I posted recently at Woop, I REALLY dislike the "grace points" thing.

I can see things getting clickish rather quickly.

Otherwise, I like the changes okay, although I miss the three-bar crosses.

Wow! The grace points are gone!

Thanks for listening (though I know none of you would order "whine" during Lent). Grin

I love how some of the Eastern Orthodox here have been complaining about the karma thing and the lack of three bar crosses, and yet the most popular smiley among these same EO's seems to be the Pentecostal one that jumps around and claps and stuff.

I like the US general's stars. Is the karma thing the same as the grace points? The only thing I didn't like about those was somebody was voting me down. I never used that to vote anybody up or down.

It sounds like there are sometimes advantages to not always having the speakers turned on.  Smiley  I didn't know about the sound clip since I never heard it.  I wonder if I've been missing anything else.

The audio for new messages is kind of annoying because it keeps repeating itself.

For some reason I am unable to post my location on the map.

Do you have to be at a certain member level to do it?

I tried from both my profile and from "member map" at top. Neither worked--I also was unable to post my location, and I'm "da Santo Papa!"

In order to do the map thing (which I also had trouble with), you've gotta fill out all the fields, and in addition to that, you've gotta put a pin on your location.  To do that, you just have to click your mouse over the place on the map where you can be found.

Why did Bobby list "Afghanistan" as his location on the membermap, and why did he put his pin in the African Continent (specifically, the country of Mauritania)?

Hypo's also seems to be getting messed up... unless there was an earthquake or something last night and part of MA broke off and slid a few thousand miles North Wink

Could someone clarify the meaning of the colors on the member map?

Blue = Male Orthodox?
Red = Female Orthodox?
Green = Oriental Orthodox?

I did all that (several times), clicked on "SAVE PIN," but my pin still does not show.

UPDATE: Disregard! I finally got it right (after a stint off the east coast of Africa).

I have a suggestion. I like the new emoticons or smilies. It would be nice to add a smilie that was praying. After all, we have one that is reading.

I've just noticed that the colour coding for member status showing who is online is messed up. Us Full members are showing up as Newbies. Of course this is just to help us in dealing with our pride so I thank you for humbling me during Lent Grin
