There had been rumors and rumblings that Auxiliary Bishops were going to be appointed for several Metropolitans of the Greek Archdiocese. Now, it is starting, even without a mention of the ordination date:

New Auxiliary Bishop Elected

October 31, 2006

New York, NY - His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America announces on behalf of the Holy Eparchial Synod, the unanimous election by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of the Very Reverend Archimandrite Demetrios Kantzavelos, Chancellor of the Holy Metropolis of Chicago, as an Auxiliary Bishop to the Holy Archdiocese of America, “presently for the needs of the Holy Metropolis of Chicago, with the high title of the once renown diocese of Mokissos.”

On the announcement of the election, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America said: “I congratulate the newly elected bishop and I wholeheartedly wish him a fruitful and creative service in his new most sacred mission. May he have the permanent support of God in his labors for the good of the Church and for the glory of God.”

The election announcement from the Ecumenical Patriarchate is as follows:

His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America,
New York

We inform your most beloved Eminence that following a dully executed election in the Most Sacred Patriarchal Church, the Reverend Archimandrite Demetrios Kantzavelos was elected unanimously auxiliary Bishop to the Holy Archdiocese of America, presently for the needs of the Holy Metropolis of Chicago, with the high title of the once renown diocese of Mokissos. Congratulations.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew
Fanar, 30 October 2006.

Looks like the opponents of the new administrative structure in the GOA got a compromise, canonically this Auxiliary should have been placed under the Metropolis of Chicago, not the Archdiocese of New York. It's a shame really, I had hoped that His All-Holiness would stand up against those voices and continue with the decentralization of the GOA; oh well, at least they're going ahead with decentralizing the finances last I heard.

Does anyone really care what you think?

To be correct Auxiliary Bishop do not exist in the canonical word. They are Bishops in name in only and have no diocese to administer. There are hints of Bishops who are in another Bishops territory with permission and how they may operate but at no time in the canonical literature are "Auxiliary Bishops" discussed.

Personally I think it is a good sign that they are under NY rather then remaining under the direct authority of Constantinople. Before the Antiochian Archdiocese went into a Diocese structure all of the Auxiliary Bishops were under the authority of the Patriarch of Antioch directly and not under Metropolitan Philip. The Greek Archdiocese is being treated very much like and Autonomous Church here in America and that is a good sign.

All of our "auxillaries" have been under the Archbishop since the 50's or 60's... The question is whether this particular one should be listed as a suffrigant of Chicago or of the Archdiocese (at the moment he is the latter).  Metropolitans and Archbishops both have the theoretical ability to have other bishops "under" (very loose use of the word) them... But I think in this case it was wise, in order to not set up the expectation that this particular bishop will be the "natural" successor to Metropolitan IAKOVOS when he retires/dies.
