The one with his arms crossed all rebel in a church like. ;)

Indians stand in church with crossed arms just like that.  I think Old Believers do as well.

I've been scolded for that a couple of times.
So have I, but it is old custom:

Nice! I love these Ukrainian shirts.
+ 1. I wish had such one (or Romanian, or Serbian type) ;)
Do Romanians and Serbs have similar patterns to the world famous Ukrainian shirts?

Romanians more similar (just watch some videos on YT from some church solemnities in Romanian, or put in Google "Romanian traditional national shirt"; as for Serbs, it depends on region, we usually prefer flowers than crosses, but in some areas the shirts are like Ukrainian ones, again, put in Google "српска кошуља", e.i "Serbian shirt"); at also applies to Bulgars.

A lot of Copts (including me) also cross their arms during service

But in Mike's tradition it looks rebellious....that's all i meant....

I'm not so sure; sometimes I do the same thing, I mean crossing my arms during the service, beacause it's easier to keep standing in the same position, focus on prayer or have control on body (especially hands) movements. And nobody has scolded me regarding that (I hear comments only about the issue that I'm usually restless, I wave and wable my legs :P).

There's a section in my parish where all the men tend to cross their arms while standing (me included).  I never thought about it until now, but all of us that do inhabit a particular space in the nave.

Yes, really a cross is better I use them both.

The statue behind me is in honour of some victory.

From same language with different names to roughly mutually understandable, how close is Bulgarian to Macedonian? Enjoy the trip!

Is there really any difference? My friend speaks Croatian and claims that Serbs won't understand her if she speaks Croatian without using Jugoslavian vocabulary. I wonder whether that applies to Macedonian vs. Serbian.

She hears, upon that water without sound,
A voice that cries, “The tomb in Palestine
Is not the porch of spirits lingering.
It is the grave of Jesus, where he lay.”
We live in an old chaos of the sun,
Or old dependency of day and night,
Or island solitude, unsponsored, free,
Of that wide water, inescapable.

Actually, the language is Serbo-Croatian. So that's an absurd. I understand Croats. What's more, there actually different lines of dialect divisions, than Croatian-Serbian; ijekavski and ekavski, and štokavski, štakavski and kajkavski (the most basic ones, there are more), and some of these dialects are spoke by both, Croats and Serbs.
After the collapese of Yugoslavia, mainly Croats and Montenegrins have been trying to introduce their own vocabulary; I remember one of my cousins having volumes of Harry Potter both in Croatian and Serbian (it depended on which was published earleir, and then she bought the certain edition - Croatian or Serbian; so you see, no problems in understanding), and in Serbian edition the broom Firebolt was translated as "Vatrena munja" and in Croatian one as "Vatrena strela".

Surely, there are some real differences in vocabulary, but you can say it also e.g for Polish or any other language.

However, the difference between Serbo-Croatian and Macedonian is bigger, as the grammar is different, that's the most important thing. But there is one Macedonian living in my housing estate and we don't have serious problems to understand each other.

I recall my Macedonian client speaking with Bosnians and Serbians (IKR, I thought they wouldn't enjoy each other) and they were speaking to each other fluently, fast, laughing. Later on I asked him about it and he said each was speaking their own language. He also said one side understood the other easier then the other way around. I couldn't really grasp the difference, it sounded all the same to my non-Slavic-speaking ears.

On a side note, I've seen Brazilians claiming they can understand Spanish easier than European Portuguese, which may resemble this disparity inside Serbo-Croatian between divisions of register and of dialect. But the same isn't true for me, and I believe this is just a matter of phonology, in which Brazil preserved an older set of sounds closer to Spanish while Portugal changed for some reason. Also the variety spoken here in Rio is closer to Europe then the rest of Brazil.

I'm puting two my other Grabarka-Antiochian pics

Supraśl, after the interview of which photo I posted earlier (I'm on the left, if somebody was not aware :P)

Grabarka - each pilgrim, after reaching the Holy Mount, go around the main (Transfiguration) church of the monastery 3 times on the knees with the intentional cross, that then is left on the Mountain.

I have been working with some very down to earth Arabs lately, I realize it a hard language, it sounds like a lot of tounge rolling when they speak Arabic, yet it sounds beautiful.

Great job Dominka, your Arabic sounds great.

It is a hard language, but rather because of other things than pronunciation (well, emphatic letters are the unique ones that most cases I still can't pronuncate).

Thanks :)

I can't say if your Arab is good since I don't know Arab, but you certainly look very confident speaking it, which is something many people who learn the same language for years and years can't do. As me and German. Do you have often chances to practice it?

I'm at Arabic studies, so, during the Academic year - yes. Beyond university - no. The previous summer I had short talks with to Arabic native speakers and these holidays, 1st long talk with hieromonk Kyrillos (Syrian monk living in the Holy Mount Athos) and the second one with the patriarch ;)

Arabic (good job btw Dominica, you know better Arabic than me lol )
Oh, thanks. But not Egyptian Arabic, I'm pretty sure ;)

That should be your next project, especially if you want to enjoy the movies and music  ;)

Well, we have 2 classes weekly of Egyptian Arabic, but yeah, the best way to learn it is listening to music (and I do it) and watching the films (watched only a few) and it's very necesary beacause Egypt produces a lot of such stuff and as I can notice, even many cartoon movies are translated not into Fusha (Standard Arabic), but into Egyptian Arabic ;)

If you have access to old Egyptian movies, I recommend Naguib el Rihani movies.  The man was waaaaaay ahead of his time in his acting, and there are a lot of good dialogues (and comedy).

I post here often enough to where I should try and not be so anonymous.  I don't feel particularly comfortable posting permanent images of myself up, and I don't feel comfortable at all posting up images of other people, so I'll do this:

I want to be like Dominika when I grow up.
It's common knowledge that you secretly want to be born in early 17th century Russia.  As a serf or a royal, I know not.  Chances are serf.

We go grey early.  My dad was all grey by 30, so at least I beat him on that.  I did get carded yesterday though, so that was flattering.

It's a compliment, though I don't blame you for being suspicious.  ;)

That' so unfair.  I've only got a few white strands here and there.  ;D  The very first ones showed up in my late teens.  Maybe by the time I'm 40 I'll be all snowy-headed and classy.
