They used to have a page on Evgeny over at orthodox.net, but the link on this page is broken. Here is what used to be there.

The New Martyr Evgeny the Soldier - 1999
When I was in Moscow last year just about every parish book stall had a xeroxed notice about a young soldier named Evgeny, who had been captured by the Chechens along with five of his buddies. The Chechens promised to spare the young Russians their lives if they converted to Islam. The others agreed, but Evgeny refused, insisting that he was an Orthodox Christian. The Chechens sent his severed head to his mother as a sort of memento. He was martyred on his 18th (17th?) birthday. This young lad was everywhere (Moscow & environs, Sergiev Posad, Murom, Diveevo, Arzamas) recognized as a martyr in a spontaneous, popular movement of piety. His picture was everywhere, usually with the caption "martyred soldier Evgeny".

Dear Fr. Seraphim,

I asked my friends from Russia to send me a book about Evgeniy. I will receive it soon and will send you more information and few pics. Unfortunately, it's in Russian, if you know somebody who could help me to translate it to English, it would be great.

He was martyred on his 18th birthday, 6 months after he started his service. He was beheaded by Chechen field commander Ruslan Haihoroev, after Evgeniy denied to give up his cross (which by the way was part of the medal for bravery) for 3 months. Many months his mother searched for his body, and finally after paying $500, was shown the forest where he was. She found 4 more boys along with him. For weeks after bringing back the bodies, she tried to get his head back. Now, people put a giant wood cross on his grave. The cross that he did not give up, his mother, Lubov Radionova, gave to St Nicholas Church in Ordinka, Moskow.

He was canonized on August 20th. The church is to build in Hankala, near Grozniy. It will be the only Russian Orthodox church in Chechnia. Fr. Nazariy is to serve there.

I tried to translate to Eng., from many sites in Russian, if you want, I could send you links to them.

More information would be appreciated! Send toseraphim@orthodox.net

As you can see, the images are still on the web site but the page is missing Huh

It is sad that this boy had to die. But that is also the responsibility of his government in Moskow. What do russian soldiers search in Chetchenia? They destroyed everything there. They kill simple people. For them everybody is a terrorist - even women and children. So - russian soldiers should go out of CHETCHENIA!

And the Islamists should read carefully the Koran, because what they did was even against the laws  of their religion.

They  will never bring up a peaceful solution in that country!

He was not a hero but a victim of his government!

Only peaceful fights can be if someone belives really in Christos! He  was always against war and against killig someone!

For me nobody is better than the other in this war of terrorists! (both are terrorists!)

[ What do russian soldiers search in Chetchenia? They destroyed everything there. They kill simple people. For them everybody is a terrorist - even women and children. ]

They search for the terrorists that started this whole thing in the first place.  By bombing an apartment complex in Moscow where 300 INNOCENT MEN, WOMEN, and  CHILDREN  were slaughtered!  Not unlike what we are doing now in reaction to 9/11.

Where is your concern over the massacres of Copts occuring today in the Sudan, where hundreds of thousands are being butchered regularly?! Or the similar fate of Copts in Egypt, Somalia, etc? Where is your sympathy for those victims of islamic-masonic agression in Kossovo and Bosnia?!

[He was not a hero but a victim of his government!]

It was not the Russian government that declared a Jihad!

The chechens declared "jihad". When you declare a war you put your civilians at risk, especially when you employ terrorist tactics of using civilian and non-combatant facillities to shield your aggression. They use their people as human shields. They use them for islam and criminality.

[And the Islamists should read carefully the Koran, because what they did was even against the laws of their religion.]

You obviously have never read the  Quran or you wouldn't make such a statement.

Islam compels its adherents to force others to accept Islam.  Muslims must fight until all their oppenents prefer death.  Christians and Jews may be spared if they pay "Jizya" (penalty tax) with willing submission, and humiliation.

Surah 9:29

"Fight  those who believe not in Allah nor the last day...Nor acknowledge the religion of truth (even if they are) of the people of the Book,  until they pay the Jizya (taxes) with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued."

Surah 5:33

"The Punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or cutting off of the hands and feet,
from opposite sides or exile from the land.."

Apostacy is punishable by death - Mohammed said, "Whoever changes his Islamic religion, kill him."  Vol. 9:57

A Muslim should not be killed if he kills a non-Muslim:  Mohammed said, "No Muslim should be killed for  killing a kafir" (infidel).  Vol 9:50

Ethnic cleansing is permitted:  Mohammed said to the Jews, "You should know that the earth belongs to Allah and  His Apostle(Mohammed) and I want to expel you from his land, so, if anyone owns property he is permitted to sell it."  Vol 4:392

So - like I understand by your comments - the war against Chetchenians by the russian government is right?

What abaout Jesus? He was always against violence and war!

War is never a means of politics or democracy!

Before commenting me, better read the pages of Amnesty International about human rights and Chetchenia!

I am against violence - because of the christian religion!

And shurely not the Chetchenians started the war! That their opposition agianst Russia is made with the wrong way, is clear. Never can be found a solution by terroristic actions or violence!

The story of the soldier Eugene the new martyr reminds me of what a Russian friend told me about a relative of hers who was conscripted into the Soviet army and got kicked in the chest by a whole gang of soldiers for wearing a cross.

Chechnya isn’t part of the Russias — it was annexed by the Russian Empire either in the 1700s or the 1800s, I think the 1800s. I’d say let it go, and thought the Russians were fighting for it so their leaders would save face and stay in power, but another Russian friend told me Chechnya is a crime center of the Caucasus and that the Russians are protecting their own people in neighboring provinces from Chechen criminals.

Chechnya may not have been part of Russia historically, but Russia is attempting to create a state where minorities are free and part of the society.  If it lets Chechnya go, then Dagastan will want to go along with every other minority.  It is in the best interests of the Russian nation to keep Chechnya in the fold.

Methana speaks from emotionalism rather than logic.  "Jesus wouldn't have supported war."  Well Jesus also would not have worn shoes, a business suit, driven a car, eaten at a restaurant, etc. because JESUS WAS HISTORICALLY A 1ST CENTURY JEWISH MALE!  We can't always ask "what would Jesus do???"  We CAN use reason which was given to us BY GOD to make INFORMED DECISIONS.  A government can legitimately and in a CHRISTIAN way protect its citizens by maintaining defense forces.  If those forces need to stop terrorists, then that is legitimate.  In the exercise of that mission, however, they must make every attempt to avoid bloodshed of innocents, but as Orthodoc pointed out, sometimes people like the Chechens hide their military among civilians in the hopes of blurring those distinctions.

In Christ,

ENGLAND: [MUSLIM] ASIANS RUN RIOT - AGAIN

Yorkshire Post, Saturday 11 January 2003
http://www.ypn.co.uk/viewarticle.aspx
ArticleID=198879&SectionID=55&Search=arson&Searchtype

Mobs [of Muslims] run riot in night of race hate

A NIGHT of racist violence brought terror to the streets of Yorkshire
as gangs of [Muslim] Asian  youths caused mayhem in a series of unprovoked
attacks.

Groups of young [Muslim] men went on the rampage in Leeds, Bradford and
Halifax, setting fire to a church and stoning a vicar, seriously
injuring one man, and smashing the car windscreen of a terrified
disabled driver as his vehicle came under fire from bricks and
fireworks.

Yesterday the Bradford vicar whose church was set alight said he
feared for his life when a 50-strong gang of masked [Muslim] Asian youths
hurled stones and fireworks at him as he went to investigate an arson
attack.

The Rev Tony Tooby (pictured), vicar of St Phillip's Church,
Girlington, said the [Muslim] youths surrounded his car, shouting Get the
white bastard', and pelting him with stones.

Mr Tooby said: "As I came round the corner there were [Muslim] youths
chucking rockets at cars and at each other. One landed near me and
they were all laughing and joking.

"I got out of my car to see what was happening and I realised they
were going into my church. There were 40 or 50 of them [Muslims] and it was
frightening. I could smell smoke and I feared the church would go.
I got back in the car and dialled 999."

Mr Tooby said he quickly realised the [Muslim] gang had gathered behind
his car.

"They shouted, Get the white bastard,' and I put the car in gear,
put my head down and drove as fast as I could up the road."

The [Muslim] gang pursued Mr Tooby up Washington Street, pelting his car
with missiles which smashed the rear window. He alerted a police patrol
at the top of the road and officers quickly arrived, by which time the
culprits had fled.

Chief Supt Phil Read, who is investigating the [Muslim] attack, said Mr Tooby
had been extremely fortunate to escape uninjured, and added: "It was
a despicable act and we are hoping that the scene of crime officers
will yield some evidence we can work with in catching those
responsible."

The Bishop of Bradford, David Smith, last night condemned the
attack.
He said: "I was appalled to receive news of the [Muslim] attack and I am
equally dismayed to hear of the race abuse hurled at the vicar.
"The [Muslim] perpetrators of this violence bring their community into
disrepute and give no satisfaction at all to those who are working
for racial harmony in Bradford."[

As he surveyed the damage at the church yesterday - a burnt-out
chair, damage to stained glass windows, scorched carpet and prayer
books strewn around - Mr Tooby insisted the attack would not deter
his efforts to unite the community in Girlington.
He said: "I have been here nearly four years and we have respect for
the community and they respect us. . It is only a small percentage of
the [Muslim] youths who are involved in this type of behaviour. [Riots everywhere and he wants us to believe that he did a head count and asserts to us that it is only a small percentage!
"We will not let the mindless few [several gangs of hundreds of rioters constitute a few??] ruin the good relationships we have in Girlington. We cannot."
The latest attack comes only weeks after vicar Bob Hill was pelted
with bricks by a gang of Asian [Muslim] youths in Manningham. [O! So this is just one more of how many other attacks??]

Mr Hill was stoned after he told the [Muslim] gang to stop wrecking an Asian
women's community centre next to St Paul's vicarage in the riot-torn
area of the city. As his horrified wife watched, he was hit in the
stomach by a brick, but was not seriously hurt [well it is good to know that these Muslims aren't out to kill people when they throw  bricks at old men...Very comforting indeed!!].

There were hundreds of other incidents across West Yorkshire on
Monday, with reports that people on their way to a family bonfire and
fireworks display in Roundhay Park, Leeds, were approached by [Muslim] youths chanting: "Get out of Afghanistan," and demanding drivers say: "Osama Bin Laden rules."

When they refused, horrified drivers and passengers tried to escape
as their cars were pelted with bricks, and fireworks were thrown
through their windows [by the Muslim terrorists].

Witness Victoria Hardy, 21, a student at Leeds University, said:
"It was unbelievable - horrifying stuff. The [Muslim] youths tried to make my
friend in the car in front say that Osama bin Laden ruled, and when
he said sorry, but he couldn't, they threw a firework into the car.
It went off while four of them were still in there. They [Muslims] started
hurling bricks at them and then came over to us to do the same."

She added: "I think we were lucky not to have been seriously injured
but we were still very shocked. None of us is racist in the slightest
and we did absolutely nothing to ask for what happened to us."
One man was seriously injured in the series of attacks on motorists
on Harehills Road in Leeds, where riots took place only five months
ago [Oooo yet another riot...lets see..How many does that make for these peaceful Muslims...After all Islam means peace!  Or maybe it means a "piece" of you hide or skull].

The 38-year-old man was sitting in the back of a Ford Fiesta when a gang of 10 to 15 asian [Muslim] men ran towards the car at about 7.50pm. [Now its "MEN" doing this...But "Islam" means peace!!]
His friend who was sitting in the passenger seat last night said: "We
were on our way to the bonfire in Roundhay and saw them [Muslims] coming
towards us.

"I saw the window come through and one of them had smashed a
whisky bottle right through into my friend's face, his eye was literally
hanging off his face.

"It was terrifying. They didn't care if they killed him. [SUPRISE! SURPRISE! SUPRISE!!!]

A second incident, in Harehills Road, involved a 48-year-old disabled
man who was in slow-moving traffic when a group of [Muslim] youths pelted his
car with fireworks and bricks before smashing his car windscreen with
an axe.

Hours later in nearby Rossington Road, a man was punched in the face
as he approached a group of five [Muslim] Asian youths who were smashing up
his wife's car.

Two cars were set alight and several other incidents involving [Muslim] youths
throwing bricks and fireworks were reported in Harehills Lane,
Roundhay Road, Shepherd's Lane and Banstead Park.

Officers in riot gear were deployed to disperse the [Muslim] groups and two
people were arrested for violent disorder.

A second night of disturbances in Halifax saw a house attacked and
cars set alight despite a strong police presence. The trouble flared
at 7.35pm on Monday night after reports that a group of [Muslim] Asian youths
were throwing bricks at a house in Aspinall Street.

On Sunday night five arrests were made following sporadic outbreaks
of violence in which emergency services came under attack from stone-
throwing [Muslim] youths.

Later, police said a 28-year-old man and a 17-year-old youth were
cautioned for possession of controlled drugs and possession of an
offensive weapon respectively following the disturbances in Halifax.
A 22-year-old man from Halifax was charged with possession of a
controlled drug and appeared before Calderdale magistrates yesterday.
