Title: What videos are you watching?
Post by: RobS on August 11, 2017, 12:56:56 PM
I didn't see a thread on this, we have one for movies/tv shows, but post any videos you are watching from YouTube or elsewhere.

Tim Keller: Re-enchanting Our World
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9gqFnsM_zg

Quote
The glory and creation of God bears such unknowable depth that to know Him is to be enchaned with awe and wonder. Yet within our consumer society, our obsession with material gain can trump our wonder for God. Drawing from Charles Taylor's work describing how we in the West became a "disenchanged" society, Keller explores in this CFW Conference resource how this disenchantment, while bringing a greater sense of human autonomy and freedom, has also brought a "malaise of modernity", stripping away a deeper sense of our humanity and the meaning and purpose that had been associated with an "enchanged" world. How did we get here? How do we move forward toward a re-enchanged view of God's creation and technological tools we employ? How does the knowledge of God who made us in His image re-affirm our identity and renew our call to cultivate this world in His likeness?

I've been watching a video series called "Google Translate Sings:" the channel host runs various song lyrics through multiple languages in Google Translate and then after translating them back into English, sings the re-translated version.  Some of them are pretty funny.  Here's a sample of "I See the Light" from Tangled https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBK-4YSLDew

I have really enjoyed this modern resetting of Gregorian chant by the monks of Conception Abbey (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wolWoiWLtg).

The action of the video is nothing special, but I've let it run in the background around the house a couple of times.

We should probably all quit posting in this thread so it doesn't cause too much confusion with the Video of the Day one.

The only LPers I really watch anymore are raocow (who's currently doing every Megaman platformer in order), Lucahjin, and Chuggaaconroy. I thought about watching PeanutbutterGamer play Cuphead though, since it's so amazingly trippy looking.

No prob! Check out Kallgren's Shakespeare Month stuff, his video on the terrible French movie Immortal Ad Vitam (and the one on the amazing Czech movie Little Otik), and Lindsey's video on The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Really, most of both of their channels are top notch. It's the er-hemmm, recent events related videos that bum me out the most.

Probably never seen something as cynical as this. An excellent parody of certain kind of Fundamentalist lifestyle. The best thing is that it actually takes certain naive religious principles into their logical conclusion which for example takes the main character into drug addiction. Here's the first episode:

EDIT: Anyway, sorry for the rant. This is what I'm referring to. Already confirmed in it's major details by those who were there. It's reddit, so content caveats.

TL;DR, the "nice guy" of Channel Awesome, Justin "JewWario" Carmichel, who everybody on the site mourned to the heavens when he shot himself four years ago, has been revealed to have been a rapist.

Now everybody including me is going through a "What did they know and when did they know it?" panic phase about everybody involved.

Yes, I agree for his victims.

But JewWario is facing either heaven or hell (pre-Last Judgment) right now, and surely our prayers have the possibility of changing the outcome before the Great Judge opens the Book of Life and creates the definitive, eternal sentence.

I did like his editorials and the out-of-character talks with Rob a lot more than the NC, but now the context on all of it is just too gross to think about.

I've always been more of a Linkara/Lindsey Ellis/Phelous fan, anyway.

I think this is the first 'react' video I've watched in, I dunno, like 8 years, and it went pretty much how I expected. "Too dark," "gee golly gosh such bad language!" "[complains] This is more like a movie than a game... [TIME FOR PLAYER TO PLAY] ... *does nothing and stares at screen as zombies kill them*"  etc. I do have to admit that the lady who was disgusted and said it was "sick" was pretty amusing. Guess that'll hold me for another decade or so.

WOMEN CAN'T READ (https://youtu.be/nEAcBVn3gqU)

1. The fact that the term "fake reader girl" now exists makes me want to throw things.

2. Silly me for thinking that such a basic human pursuit as reading would be safe from the whinging of manbabies.

3. Note how much she has to bend over backwards at the end of the video to head off all the usual BS responses in the comments- the notallmens and what have you. *sigh* Just... screw comments sections.

4. I have a knee jerk negative reaction to Star Wars novels regardless of who's reading them and I find myself wishing she'd picked a better example of sci-fi lit, so maybe I'm part of the problem...

5. Thanks for making this channel known to me.

I guess the thing that set it off was a guy who made some comments about booktube women who wear makeup and have pro lighting and nice backdrops (or something like that), and all make the same videos about the same small number of books, and how he couldn't picture them being hunkered down and completely immersed in reading.

I just kinda stumbled on it when I began to type the name of the guy into the search bar (he was recommended by another person) and one of the search suggestions was "steve donoghue fake reader." One hour and many annoyed response videos later and here we are.  :police:

I like her channel as well... I hope she makes some more vids at some point.

So, bookish women have to be... poor? Slovenly? Too dumb to figure out proper lighting? I don't understand what his point is supposed to be lol.

I mean, the whole "fake nerd girl" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNk3XVKVTeQ) meme was about crap like not having every little scintilla of niche knowledge. But I don't even get how that's supposed to be connected to the idea that girls who read can't video good lol.

Small reference pools are unfortunate. But that's hardly limited to the booktube.

I like her channel as well... I hope she makes some more vids at some point.

Incest is a theme, yes. Not sure 'fetishized' is the word, though. After all, the 'turns out it's not incest after all' treatment is about as popular as the 'it looked okay, but oops, it's incest' one.

Yeah, that is true.

To be honest, I had to look up the plagiarism issue (because I read books but don't generally bother with gossip about authors) and once I saw who she's supposed to have plagiarised, I couldn't help chortling. Putting aside the fact that the concepts wrangled over are light years away from any definition of originality, the main point is that Cassandra Clare writes YA and Sherrilyn Kenyon quite explicitly doesn't. Taking the sex out of a story and smoothing the transitions so that it goes seamlessly will leave you with a very different story, even if the rest is copied word-for-word (and requires no mean writing skill). I'd put down money the issue is that Clare's books have been getting better press and sales than Kenyon's. A bit like it was 20 years ago, when J.K. Rowling was accused of plagiarising Diana Wynne Jones' Crestomanci series in Harry Potter (though, I seem to recall, Wynne Jones herself was not involved).

To be even more honest, I don't care if a work of fiction is plagiarised or not. Originality is something for the publishers and editors to worry over - the reader's only concern is whether the story is enjoyable or not. But then, in my formative years, I had Marion Zimmer Bradley not only actively encouraging people to write in her universe, but actually publishing them, so fanfiction is a legitimate genre in my book. YMMV.

It's funny, the video doesn't even mention Kenyon. I'm guessing she's using a looser definition of "plagiarism" as just meaning "unoriginal." That's not a good habit, I must say...

Well, fanfic is one thing. I love fanfic (as a Platonic ideal, anyway. Haven't read much of the actual thing). It's a horse of a different color when your characters are pretty much just Draco Malfoy and Ginny Weasley by other names (or so I've heard, at least) and you expect people to give you money for it with this unacknowledged. Of course, the difference between rip-off and homage/inspiration mostly comes down to quality and what you bring new to the table. So maybe if I read Mortal Instruments, I'd conclude that the characters are different enough to make the borrowings insignificant by comparison.

Though I really don't know if any artistic considerations could ever justify word-for-word borrowings (that aren't quotations). I don't know if you're saying that Clare does that to anybody.

An orphaned boy is raised by a relative's family - and not treated particularly well in the process - until a stranger sweeps into his life and sets him on a path to much bigger and better things. Am I talking about Harry Potter, Luke Skywalker, or Arthur Pendragon? Which one is the fanfic? 8) Isn't Paradise Lost a fanfic of the Book of Genesis, and the Divine Comedy a shameless self-insert into Catholic doctrine? :police:

I don't know how accurate the plagiarism accusations against Clare really are. Apparently, she did really copy back in her fanfic days - which we can't verify now because she took her stories offline before redrafting them for publication and no one seems to have saved copies. In the end, Clare is traditionally published, there have been editors involved, and spotting plagiarism is their job, not the casual reader's. Stock characters and situations are simple lack of originality, and a good writer can make enjoyable stories out of a content generator.

I agree. Like I said, the proof is in the pudding. The things that make Harry Potter different from Luke Skywalker and Luke different from Arthur Pendragon are their individual traits and actions.

I agree with the top comment that "This video is somehow more chilling for what it doesn't show." I sat with the video going a couple minutes, heart in my stomach, knowing what was going to happen and waiting to hear the explosion off-camera.. but there was no loud boom, no shouts and overt panic, just the confused realization and sadness by the people that something had gone wrong.

I agree with you there. A lot of folks think of Tinkerbell when they hear the word "fairy", but from what I've read about fairies in folklore they aren't quite the cutesy characters that the stereotype portrays.

Been watching a lot of theme park history videos (quite a few youtube channels do it).

Defunctland- The Failure of Euro Disney (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFE8RlKlLCE) or "Cultural Chernobyl," as some French intellectuals called it at the time. It really did almost close until they opened their version of Space Mountain.

Another interesting video from a similar channel- Yesterworld: The Truth Behind E.T. & the Video Game Crash of 1983. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OCk4Rs_tNI) Ie. it's actually pretty complicated.

Sometimes I miss the days when movies contained clunky segues into random Vaudeville acts lol. That's not really a genre we ever see anymore- the closest is probably the parodies in Hail, Caesar. The vaguely sexual controtionism in that one is the stuff of nightmares, though, I agree...

Linkara's review of Just Imagine Stan Lee Creating the Green Lantern (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0K-Ak-MAGA) from DC's 2001 publicity stunt series.

I really like the idea of etheral green not-fog as the source of GL's powers. It was cool that the comic had a very Jack Kirby-esque giant monster in it. I also really like the idea of aging one year for every day, and I wish it actually factored into the story more.

That having been said, if this had been a series I'm guessing it would have pretty quickly gone into the kind of cultural appropriation that JK Rowling recently got into trouble over. It's also kind of weird that the "black people" all seem like just white guys with slight tans, but that one isn't really Stan's fault.

Also, the Stan-ified Linkara drawing is adorbz and I wish I had a plushy of it.

So, would you say typical Hasidism is more like most of the Haredim?

I'm of two minds. I like a lot of things about the Haredim, and they're right to protest some of the actions of the Israeli government. But there's clearly a lot of rottenness and abuse lurking in the movement (not to mention the anti-Christian actions). That woman who's lost all belief in God is the one I feel the most bad for.

But there's clearly a lot of rottenness and abuse lurking in the movement (not to mention the anti-Christian actions). That woman who's lost all belief in God is the one I feel the most bad for.
From what I've experienced, the harassment comes out more in the big communities of Haredim like in Jerusalem and New York City. My local Chasidic synagogue is filled with friendly and pious people.

So to answer your question, yes.

Let's Play Detroit: Become Human With CohhCarnage - Episode 15 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdNFjMd4nvc)

I'm surprised this hasn't done better with critics (currently a 79 on metacritic (http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-4/detroit-become-human?ref=hp)), it totally seems like a game that would be a 'gaming journalist' darling despite its flaws. I guess it gets points knocked off for being AAA so the expectations are not absurdly forgiving higher?

Also curious if she'll pick up on the Jew/holocaust angle, which I've not heard anyone else comment on. A lot of people have mentioned the American civil rights (especially black slavery) stuff--it's impossible to miss--but towards the end the story starts getting into overt anti-semitism material as well (gathering androids in camps; exterminating them; at one point the president of the U.S. says that before anything else happens they need to deal with "the android question").

Fwiw the game isn't as boring as Jim makes out in his video (not sure if he plans on ever playing it again, probably not from what I remember him saying), as long as you're ok with walking simulators + + pick-your-adventure + QTE gameplay in general. The 'chores' part is really just to set the context of androids as servants. The main problem imo is that it's constantly contradicting itself and being heavy-handed, and bringing topics up without actually exploring them.

I have, not surprisingly, watched this a half dozen times since then (no, not because of that, get your mind out of the gutter... actually I find the hammy farmer at the beginning to be the most amusing part, especially his eyes).

Of course, I suppose one could argue that if you spend too much time frontloading the game with that sort of thing, it can bore the player and not make them want to stick around until it gets more exciting.

I'm not sure who the target audience is for videos like this? It doesn't really add any substantive commentary, so it doesn't provide much to fans of the film beyond a refresher. So maybe just some nostalgia for those fans, or an overview for people who have no intention of spending 90 minutes watching the movie but will watch an 8 minute overview? I mean, I gave it a 'thumbs up,' I'm just a bit confused.

Eh, I guess it can count as a review, and the Agent Orange connection is something interesting that I was only peripherally aware of. But I do find myself wishing it was a tad more substantial (maybe going more into the production process or the social implications of the zombies or something), especially given how polished the production is.

I find myself comparing it to Red from Overly Sarcastic's "Legends Summarized" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73y4oUG_YgA) series. It's at base the exact same thing, just with more widespread material. I could just be biased, but I find Red's approach a lot more meaty (and have a hard time articulating exactly why).

He's been [crapping] on it since the start (he dislikes Cage in general), and tbh I'm not sure how much of the stream(s) I'm gonna get through. He (and especially his co-host and the chat) are snarkily criticizing almost everything, even when those things are perfectly acceptable video game stuffs.  Very different thing from his youtube vids.

Fwiw I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've experienced something like "tingles" from it,* even though I've listened to probably more than a thousand hours of it by this point. I find it enjoyable mostly just as a background noise thing, the way some might play a recording of a thunderstorm or whatever; for me it's just mildly relaxing, but it's worked its way into my daily habits.

*and even those times might have mostly to do with pretty girls getting right up next to the camera and whispering sweet whatevers; if it was Barry Manilow getting all up in my face I probably wouldn't've got those tingles... ;) :P

Islamicize Me. A video series from David Wood. Three friends vow to follow the teachings of Mohammed for 30 days. These videos are polemical and satirical. They have caused some controversy in the apologetics community. James White has been one of the critics of this series.

One of the participants knew one of the three guys who became radicalized and tried to kill the people at a Draw Mohammed event involving Pamela Gellar and Robert Spencer. This event helped shape the series and Robert Spencer appears as himself.

I don’t know if these these videos are effective. They can be cringe inducing. Halal Hogan and the Magic Backpack are trippy. The insertion of some video lifted from James White is pretty funny.

Whitest family ever? (https://youtu.be/734YWqrldF0?t=13m42s)

No, the whitest family would be the one that I saw once in a toothpaste commercial about 15 years ago, that may or may not have actually existed, and then never again. The toothpaste they're using makes them gradually replace even noun that sounds even remotely like the word "white" with it until it culminates in a "Waltons" style "turning out the lights" exterior shot with them saying "White! White, everybody!"

I can't find a trace of it online and if my sister hadn't seen it at the same time that I did and we hadn't kept joking about it for months afterwards, I would assume that it was nothing but a dream. Was it just pulled because it was... iffy and nobody bothered to upload a copy of it to the internet? That's rare, but it does happen (though in the cases that I can think of like Crybaby Lane or the Rapsittie Street Kids, people were still talking about it online even if they had no footage, and the footage was eventually found, too). Or maybe my Googling is just weak.

It's a from a movie cartoon adaptation of Mark Twain's stories, based on a collection of his stories - and this one is based on Mark Twain's (debateably) unfinished story "The Mysterious Stranger," and of course heavily critiques Christianity
(although this isn't actually the only cartoon in the movie to critique Christianity - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkYze54wCDI - which imo Orthodoxy actually has a great answer in response to this question / criticism).

Satan tries to demonstrate how "evil God is" by creating flawed creatures and then punishing them for being flawed. Of course, this ignores the whole "Adam and Eve" and the "Fall" thing, as well as the concept of Free Will, but hey - atheism has to try to poke holes philosophically some how.

Anyways, this movie was really controversial for how it handles the topic of religion for kids.

Also, another thing to that is creepy about this, are the weird coincidences with this movie and the Heaven's Gate cult - imo, they are just coincidences, but there is the fact that the movie focuses very much on Haley's Comet, which appeared during the birthday and death of Mark Twain - however, especially with how much it criticized mainstream religion, some wonder if there was perhaps a  connection with the Heaven's Gate cult, whose founder heavily criticized mainstream Christianity as misinterpreted and false, and considering that they all (the Heaven's Gate cult) committed suicide when Haley's Comet was passing by, and the movie ends with Mark Twain being "evolved" with his light and dark sides coming together at the end with Haley's Comet, some wonder if there is something there.

I find this to be just coincidental, but still, a point to bring up nonetheless. I guess God isn't the only force on this world that draws coincidences, and perhaps Satan likes laughing at his successes, even though he ultimately will lose and has lost, and is losing.

On a whim I searched for "lying pastor" on Youtube. This gonna be an entertaining night, I can just tell by looking at the results. First up:

LOL: Pastor Fails Miserably When Interviewed By Court About How He Spends The Ministry's Funds! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxlS79Q3EXk)

I want to get mad... but he's just so clueless and it's like a parody documentary (like Spinal Tap). He constantly seems surprised at the questions, and gives the exact opposite response of what he should be giving. One exchange:

Q. "So you don't see that there's any problem, when you're ministering to the poor, the sick, the needy, to be appearing in Louie Vuitton and Versace?
A. "Well, that is something I purchase all the time..."

I'm not sick like that.

You have a problem with Abraham marrying his sister, but you don't seem to have a problem with God endorsing the marriage and promising him a son through his sexual relationship with his sister.  A few verses later, he destroys two cities for their (homo)sexual immorality, but that one verse from Ezekiel means it has nothing to do with sex at all, just bad manners, right?

Look, if you don't understand Scripture, that's fine, lots of us don't.  But don't judge it and preach it based on your own glaucomic hermeneutic.  We have a great tradition of teachers and spiritual masters who have grappled with all this and more.  Sit at their feet and learn.  Or ask the Holy Spirit to teach you and be quiet until he does.  But railing against Jesus' family would not appear to be a winning strategy.

Yes, I have a problem with incest on the family tree of Christ.

I though they were more of a late 80s thing.  Might have disappeared way early in the 90s.  Unless some sick markets held on to then.

It's a little pitchy at times, but aside from the not-so-novelty-anymore element of a familiar rock ballad on an orchestral instrument, the triple stops about 2/3 through are what I found impressive.

Short cartoon about a worm living in an apple (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zre4q46_Tts)

Why do I feel like the ending is a metaphor for life in a low-trust (http://www.cracked.com/quick-fixes/the-crazy-sociology-experiment-buried-in-russian-game-show/) society? (https://themoscowtimes.com/news/poor-russian-families-berate-a-store-owner-for-handing-out-free-bread-57492)

I love that kind of 70s "political cartoon-style" animation (that's just my personal term, I don't know if there's some more formal to it) like Spy vs. Spy or The Point. Funny to me how it always seemed to transcend the Iron Curtain. Must have been a lot of informal interaction between animators.

Of course with eternal life we could find out the actual value of numbers like:

The Enormous TREE(3) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3P6DWAwwViU) (NOT ft. Harvey Friedman. boo!)
Not that it's all that relevant to praising the Lord forever, but eternity is sufficient ;)

Volnutt's just calling you sexy.  The video is about angry incels, though, so I guess they would use it unkindly.  "Chad" being the one for white guys.  There was a list of similar incel terms, for which the uploader apologized.   :-[

"Chad" is what angry "involuntary celibates" call guys who get women when they can't. But, since they're 4Chan-style crypto-racists- if Chad is black then he's Tyrone, if he's Asian then he's Chang, etc.

Yeah, but I'm still grateful for the insight into an aspect of (internet) culture that I only incompletely understood before now.

I watched it right after watching the 30-minute documentary "Shy Boys: IRL" (https://vimeo.com/28466163) which follows three incels meeting one another for the first time. I recommend that as well.

Yeah. I have a lot of sympathy for the various problems that have gotten them where they are, especially when I see a whole lot of my own insecurities in Michael and Advanced from "Shy Boys." But their "coping" strategy is doing nothing but making bad and not-that-bad problems into deservedly insurmountable ones.

And that's not even getting into the ones who have made themselves truly inhuman (http://www.wehuntedthemammoth.com/2014/05/31/coalpha-forum-member-on-elliot-rodger-had-he-just-butchered-as-many-sorority-girls-as-he-could-he-would-have-been-a-true-hero/) (NSFW).

Be Watchful and Prepare (https://s3.amazonaws.com/video.orthodoxsermons.org/BeWatchfulandPrepare-FrPaulGirguis.mp4)
Good Coptic homily.

The epistle for the EO (new calendar) dovetailed well: Titus 3:8-15
Quote
8 This is a trustworthy statement; and concerning these things I want you to speak confidently, so that those who have believed God will be careful to engage in good deeds. These things are good and profitable for men. 9 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and disputes about the Law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. 10 Reject a factious man after a first and second warning, 11 knowing that such a man is perverted and is sinning, being self-condemned.

12 When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, make every effort to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. 13 Diligently help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way so that nothing is lacking for them. 14 Our people must also learn to engage in good deeds to meet pressing needs, so that they will not be unfruitful.

15 All who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us in the faith.

Grace be with you all.
