Title: Decision Made
Post by: Jennifer on January 23, 2005, 07:57:57 PM
I've alluded to this recently but hadn't officially announced it.  I've made the decision to become a catechumen in the OCA.  So you guys are stuck with me now.  Too bad for you.   O0

Seriously though. It's been a tough decision.  I'd made it "intellectually" a few months but it took awhile for my emotions to catch up.

My family isn't thrilled although they don't know I've made up my mind definitively.  My mom keeps suggesting that I check out a local Catholic church recommended by a priest she knows.  My father, a very serious Roman Catholic, won't discuss it with me.  I've pretty much explained Orthodoxy to them as Roman Catholicism without the pope which seemed to make them happy.  I'm not becoming Baptist after all.   ;D

I feel happy and somewhat relieved to have finally come to a conclusion ending a somewhat 'stormy' part of my life.  The discernment process takes a lot out of a person.

I expect a long catechumenate period as I am entirely too argumentative for my own good but at least I'll be a member of the Orthodox Church.

Congrats :) I wish you well. I remember when I told my Roman Catholic Grand Mother I was converting to Orthodoxy. I had been attending an Antiochian parish about 35 miles away and she just didn't see the point of it all. When I told her, she just got this blank look on her face and said "But WHY? There's a Greek Catholic Church right down the road. It's the same thing. It's Greek Orthodox." I replied, "Gram, that's a Greek Catholic Church, not an Orthodox Church." To which she responded "That's the same thing." lol :) Have fun trying to navigate the family rapids.

Congratulations Jennifer,

If I remember correctly you were thinking about this as far as 2 years ago on the Byzcath site. I just remember you mentioning being interested in Byzantine Catholicism and Orthodoxy on one thread. Congratulations on a good decision.

God Bless your and you journey to Orthodoxy

Jennifer:

Congratulations!  Take all the time you think you need.  There is no hurry.  You are inquisitive and like to think outside the box.  I like and respect you for that.

Always respect where you came from as well as where you are once you arrive.

God Be With You!

Yes, it is. Greek Catholic is Catholic, under Rome, that uses a Byzantine rite of liturgy.

Yay Jennifer! Welcome home!

It is an eastern ortdox but is it in communion with the Pope John II since it is under Rome?

I just want to be so clear on this....

No. Greek Orthodox is Orthodox and not in communion with Rome. Greek Catholic is Catholic and is in communion with Rome. Have you ever heard of Byzantine Catholics? That's what Greek Catholics are. Check the post again and look at the bolded word.

Congrats, Jennifer.  I'm glad you've made up your mind.  Living in a limbo, so to speak, is just plain frustrating.  May God bless you on your journey into Orthodoxy!

Congratulations on getting through a tough discernment that many of us are familiar with.  As to the family thing, just like anything else, I guess it just has to be taken one day at a time.  Prayers for the continuation of your journey!

In case you didn't notice the change in my religious affiliation box, I am now officially a catechumen.
