Title: Wisdom Teeth
Post by: Gyllynn on June 13, 2013, 11:08:34 PM
I'm scheduled to have all of my wisdom teeth removed tomorrow morning and I'm worried about some things, so please pray that I have peace of mind and a swift recovery.

May the Lord ease your worries, and grant that the procedure is a success and that you make a speedy and full recovery!

Lord, have mercy!!!

How did it go? I had mine pulled a few months ago. I had an icon of Saint Apollonia with me (Patron Saint of Dentistry and Tooth Pain)

Why are they called wisdom teeth, since many people have trouble with their "wisdom" teeth.

I still have no pain or discomfort in my mouth and am grateful to each of you for your prayers and support! Thank God!

I think they are called wisdom teeth because they develop, like wisdom, with age.

Why are they called wisdom teeth, since many people have trouble with their "wisdom" teeth.

Because they tend to emerge in our late teens or early twenties, several years after the rest of our teeth. The "wisdom" adjective, also found in languages other than English, comes from this age - by then, we're supposed to have grown out of our childhood immaturity.

My dentist told me years ago the main reason folks have trouble with them: in many parts of the world, people are reaching their adulthood with all 28 teeth present, and, even then, have trouble fitting them in, let alone another four teeth at about the time their jaws have stopped growing. Also, because the wisdom teeth take so long to develop, they can often grow pointing in the wrong direction, causing problems for them and the teeth next to them.
