Only since a week ago.

I saw a bunch of ponies on Know Your Meme, I looked up some episodes on Youtube, and it was all over. True story. It happens. (http://funnyjunk.com/funny_pictures/3674969/How+I+Became+a+Brony/) (language)

Pretty much the same here, except it happened to me about 2 months ago. Me and my fiancee decided to watch a few episodes after we laughed at the memes. I was shocked how much we loved it. I actually went to a brony get-together a few weeks ago.

Who's your favourite pony?

They're all growing on me, but so far Rainbow Dash. Who's yours?

I think—especially for a kid's cartoon—all the characters are actually complex and that's why the show is so interesting to adults. They wanted to make a show that was interesting enough for parents to watch with their kids, and did such a good job that now adults are fans in their own right. That has to be cool for the creators of the show to see.

I have a preference to Applejack, since I am currently residing in the southern US and the people here are very much like her. But Rainbow Dash's personality is like mine, so I also like her. But I also like them all, it is hard to choose, each one has something extremely likeable about them.

I know Lauren Faust, while not expecting it to be so big amoung young men my age, has embraced it. She has so many cultural references in the show, and especially season 2, always has something for the bronies. It's kind of cool because she actually goes online and talks with the bronies and defends them if any jerk says something about them.

You have those weird bronies that um, preform unspeakable acts, but I stay clear of them. Most of us are, relatively, sane.

I was watching some old episodes of Animaniacs recently, and the cultural references in cartoons are fun, even when they become dated. Heck, even Sesame Street is full of them. Just the fact they put them in there as a hat-tip to adults is cool. I'm not into season 2 yet, but I did skip ahead and watch the Derpy episode. I LOL'd. I'm happy I'll get to see season 3 develop live.

Kudos to Lauren Faust for embracing fans, and also to Hasbro for not being copyright Nazis and embracing the Internet. They're smart to realize that young adults with disposable income are most likely to spend money on merchandise, and most young adult fans discover the show online. (It's too bad more members of the entertainment industry don't realize this.)

Same thing with Freakazoid, my word did that cartoon  have so many cultural references in it.

Lauren Faust also created Power Puff Girls, which is a hilarious show. I mostly just watched it with my sister, but they made it interesting for me.

It is genius for them to put the episodes on youtube. It really is the reason it is such a hit in this age group.

I've never seen that show. Didn't have cable when it was on TV. But I did note the similar graphical styles of the two shows. I very much prefer that to the doughy-looking ponies on the older versions of the series.

MLP is the only TV show I've had any interest in since House ended. It's the first cartoon I've had any interest in since I got tired of watching Animaniacs on DVD. (I was hopeful about the Mr. Bean series but it was awful.) I'm really not impressed with most cartoons in the past few years, although I haven't really made a huge effort to check them out either.

In conclusion,

The only shows that I really like more, at this point in time, than MLP:FiM is Venture Brothers and Dragon Ball/Z/GT
You got me, I don't even know what those are.  My girls do watch the Power Puff Girls though.
The Venture Brothers is the most manliest of man shows a man can watch. It comes on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim and is worth watching and rewatching.
Ah, Adult Swim. That time when you're just watching some kid-friendly cartoons, and all of the sudden, after the commercial, you're freaking out and you wonder whether you accidentally changed the channel.  ;D

Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT is the most popular anime series in the world I believe, it is a show about fighting, it's pretty much people beating the crap out of eachother.

I finished watching season 2. I haven't binged on a TV show like this since I discovered "24" and had four seasons to catch up on.

It was great. Entertaining and enjoyable. The animation is good, the best Flash animation I've ever seen. Looking forward to season 3 this fall.

I'm surprised by the number of mental breakdowns the characters suffer in this show. All the episodes are blending together now, but at one point I fully expected the two girls from The Shining to appear.

There's been some undeniable influence on the current series. Of course, to be fair, the good Doctor originated the "time travel in a tiny booth" thing.

And Time Turner (the David Tennant looking pony, or Doctor Whooves as the fans call him) is badly in need of some fleshing out and limelight.

True, and I'm actually a fan of DBZ, but it's kind of hard to argue that it's "manly" and doesn't lend itself to a lot of homoeroticism (Something the creators seemed to be aware of. Note the Village People-inspired one-off character in the last episode of the Buu Saga).

"When I took the job, I braced myself for criticism, expecting many people — without even watching the show — to instantly label it girly, stupid, cheap, for babies or an evil corporate commercial. I encourage skeptics like this to watch My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic with an open mind. If I'm doing my job right, I think you'll be surprised."

—Lauren Faust

One of the biggest reasons that I'm proud to be a brony is that it's just so delightfully unlikely... and needed. This summer I've really been discovering just how much simple joy animation gives me and just how much I wanted to go into it when I was young. Though I doubt I ever had the talent necessary to overcome some early discouragement- I still think that animation is, has been, and can be a true form of art (and as such a gift from God to be used to His glory).

Lauren Faust and the rest of the crew achieved something seemingly impossible. They took one of the least taken seriously franchises ever, something that could have easily spawned yet another in a sea of "evil corporate commercials" and they made it something witty, genuinely endearing, and (most impressively) actually watchable for someone over the age of ten. Animation aimed at girls is something that for years has been in dire need of depth and quality. I'm not entirely sure why this is so while at the same time there have been many quality shows aimed at the boys, but whatever the reason, I consider it very important to support a show with even a tiny glimmer of hope of fighting back the tide of vapidity.

I'm not saying that FiM is the second coming of Chuck Jones. I recognize that it has it's flaws and moments of weak writing, but it's sure as heck better than a lot of things out there and most importantly it's a step in the right direction. It's a step back towards art. And in a field already glutted with crap for both genders, it's an very important thing.

Btw, this is an excellent example of rack focus, something that's kind of hard to pull off, I'm told. (http://i2.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/262/404/a19.gif)

It is brilliant what Lauren Faust has done, but even she was surprised by what happened, but the beautiful thing is she embraced it!

In the animation a lot of artistic people take a lot of notice. I am marveled by the artwork myself. Personally the plot, while simple, is witty and humorous. I don't think people can help but fall in love with all the characters, because they all have something loveable about them, and they balance each other out. It truly is a good show to watch when you have had a bad day, it really makes you smile.

If someone judges that as "gay" or "girly", I do not care.

Yeah, my biggest beef is that the plots kind of stick firmly in the "bag of standard cartoon scenarios" even for big events like Return of Harmony and A Canterlot Wedding, but I guess when you have to turn out one a week for about five months it's to be expected. And I marvel at what they've been able to do with what they were given.

For this reason, one of my favorite episodes is Luna Eclipsed because of the way it touches on the actual effects of having been in a thousand year slumber which I haven't really seen another fairy tale type story do (it's also apparently a nod to some fan comics).

And I have a new favorite quote for the haters:

"Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. ... When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."

I downloaded some fan-made Flash character models, just to poke around with, and that is some insane stuff. I'm no Flash expert, but I know the basics, and I can hardly believe they do MLP in Flash. It seems like it'd be cumbersome, but the results are amazing. Especially in the second half of season 2, the fluidity of the animation really approaches Disney-quality cel animation.

There are MLP fans from the 80s who don't like the new show, but having seen both, there is just no comparison in production quality.

In the meantime, I'm catching up on some good music, since I've not yet gotten into that aspect of the fandom. A few of my current faves:

  • Aphelion - Jeff Burgess (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cd9xnkQYHI) (This one is mas epic. And while it's not a parody, I swear I've heard this music before.)
  • Cutie Mark Crusaders Theme - Daniel Ingram (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTWK_efnbT8) (the wicked rock ballad from the show, instrumental!)
  • The Doctor's Lullaby - SqueakAnon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pBd3QXt20I) (from the Dr. Whooves audio drama)
  • I'll Fly Higher (Scootaloo's Theme) - AcousticBrony/MandoPony (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAdFoVKMyqg)
  • Loyalty (Rainbow Dash's Theme) - AcousticBrony/MandoPony (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voj9MhBUaTI)

I must slip some of these into the Songs You're Listening To thread at some point in time.  :police:

Cutie Mark Crusaders' song is epic! The Pet Song (Rainbow and Fluttershy), and Smile (Pinkie Pie) are my favourites.

I've posted MLP:FiM songs on that thread before. :)

:police:

Oh yes! So many good songs.

This show could easily stand up next to any Disney animated musical. It's really become that good.

An adorable derpy plushie from the amazing Piquipauparro. If you are not familiar with her or her work, then I would suggest you do yourself a favor and check her dA out. You won't be disappointed:

I've been watching me some Ponies season 2, and it's pretty awesome. Better than the first season. I completely lost it a few times. I'm pretty sure typical kids shows don't cameo Big Lebowski characters. Lol.

Sacrilege!

This post-post-modernity remix-mash-up nonsense has gone too far.

Across this line you DO NOT . . .
It gets worse. They did Kurt Russell in Escape from NY/LA.

Alas, I already ordered a Rainbow Dash plushie from someone on dA, which I'm greatly looking forward to instead. (Thankfully she's a promising newbie to the plushie scene, so it won't cost an ungodly amount of money.)

It's true.  :-\

And based on the timing (and standard practice in the broadcast world) they will probably stagger the new episodes with reruns, every other week.

Oh well. New ponies are always welcome, even if there's less. I bet S3 will be epic anyway.

People don't like the new fans because they are so defensive. Also, they are getting to be like a cult.

I don't mind if people don't like the show (like most of my friends), the post was a joke. GET A SENSE OF HUMOUR! And for the record, it wasn't insulting, how you could even take that as insulting is beyond me. If I was trolling I'd post it as a message to everyone, not post it with-in a thread for Bronies. Keep digging your hole deeper.

You are the one who called me out, I never called anyone out. I'd rather be weird and like a cartoon, than be you and act like jerk and try to hurt people's feelings (although you fail at it).

Man...things I don't understand are so stupid. Really, guys, its like you purposely pick the dumbest things ever to make cultish fanbases for. Is this what passes for irony these days? It's like when I used to go to punk rock shows (the second stupidest thing to make cultish fanbases for, but I digress...) and see guys in their mid-late 20s in Hanson t-shirts. Oh, I get it, you're really mocking it, but...you still bought a Hanson t-shirt. And you're wearing it. And somewhere far away, while you enjoy being a unique individual in your tear-away tracksuit pants and medically-unnecessary glasses, your parents are aging in dog-years from all the wondering where they went wrong.

Shame is awesome sometimes. You should make t-shirts and form subcultures around that.

I'm not technically a 'brony', but the show is legitimately good and has enough pop culture references to keep it entertaining for an older audience.

These memes are pretty awful, though.

There are people who are fans because it's sort of an ironic, hipster thing to do (cf all the merchandise sold by Hot Topic). It's true. But I'm not cool or rich enough to be a hipster, and I'm long out of high school, so I don't have any friends to impress.

It really is a solid show. It has good characters and good animation (classic Looney Tunes-style humor is seriously lacking in today's market). It's cute and innocent but still solid, makes me laugh, and is more appealing to me than most of what passes for entertainment these days.

I have a hard drive full of Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures, Looney Tunes, Foster's Home, I Love Lucy, and The Munsters. I've never been accused of having good taste, but I know what I like. I'd watch MLP over, say, South Park or Family Guy any day of the week.

I think there are more in the closet fans than we think. It just takes a lot of moxy to come out and admit you like a show like this (because it seems to be just for girls to ignorant folk). If you watch it, most people will appreciate the animation, character development, and story. I liken it alot to Looney Tunes for example. But if you don't, hey, atleast you gave it a shot. It really isn't just some girly show.

No one is shamed. Actually, the only places that make such a big deal about it is...well, the US. Because they have such ridiculous gender stereotypes. Of course, using those stereotypes, I cannot be mocked, I am a professional athlete (worshiped by American manly culture), so I guess it nullifies your judgmental view of MLP:FiM and just makes me a normal "dude".

Dear Orthonorm,

I was trying to find more pictures to kill this thread with.

Instead, I found this.

LOL. Those posters are fantastic.

I don't know if Orthodox are organized enough to pull that off, but I predict you will see ponies in Family Christian Stores by this time next year.

And it will be worse than the abomination of My Little Ponies Generation 3.5.

Depending on my weekend, I might respond to this. Cause I think you are not aware of exactly what is going on here which is indicative of a larger trend in Western, especially, American culture.

This ain't "irony" as such, especially not of the most annoying variety which you brilliantly illustrated in your post.

IMO, it's a bit darker and troubling.

But the last time I made a shot across the bow here about MLP: FiM, I was insulted by someone I thought I had a decent relationship with, falsely accused of numerous acts, and ultimately the poster left.

This is not surprising given the ideological space MLP and specifically "bronies" exist in.

But its a long week and weekend and I never feel well, so we will see.

Jeremy, you must not however see this as gen-x ueber-ironism. Nor hipsterism.

People wanted to know what would exist after hipsterism.

Here it is. It extends elsewhere of course as well.

There are "bronies" who honestly would rather be a cartoon pony than be a human.

If you're gonna try to immanetize the eschaton, at least don't do it with ponies.

Alright there, tough guy, calm down. We get it. You like ponies, and it makes you really mad that other people don't get it and find it silly. But that remains the case no matter what over-the-top reaction you have to posts on an internet message board, so I think I'll stay right here and post whatever I feel like posting.

In the meantime, I'd suggest that if you feel that your personal identity is so violated by my posts you either (a) stop reading them, or (b) get some kind of counseling and/or medication to deal with your anger issues. Probably both, because if you're so willing to come to blows over a silly Godfather reference in relation to your pony fixation, there's probably some deeper problem that should be addressed by a professional.

And (again...I just love how I get so much use out of this on this forum), it bears keeping in mind that it's never okay to hit a person because you don't like words that came out of their mouth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UA1s_GgXAGo&feature=youtu.be&t=22m17s). You can learn that now or learn that in jail; either way, what you can't do is push me around because you're a big tough man who can't take being offended.  Seriously, that's just ridiculous.

Technically I am 5'11". Yesterday I weighed 235 lbs. And I just signed my first fully pro contract about a week ago, prior to that I had a developmental deal?

20 lbs weight fluctuation is actually quite common for athletes depending on diet, running, weight lifting, etc, and so forth. Although I am fairly certain I have weighed no less than 220 lbs in the past 2 or so years. And I believe never over 245 lbs.

Celticfan, you weren't even involved. I was elaborating on my previous statement as per age1234's request:

"The show is fine for what it is.

But not for what it is not."

If anyone else has a mind to put confidence in Ponies, I far more: Cutie Marked on the eighth day, of the nation of Equestria, of the tribe of neckbeard, a Brony of Bronies; as to Friendship, a Magician; as to zeal, a persecutor of the Real; as to the righteousness which is in the Princesses, found blameless.

But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as [censored] for the sake of Christ.

Okay. But what does the bold mean? I'm not reading you mate. ???

Livestock are only allowed in the Church during hailstorms and other extreme acts of fallen nature.

By what right do you allow those equines accursed of the Ark of Noah to enter on a day of mild rains?

Look at that, the patron saint of Bronies. St Philip would approve. It's practically biblical.  :P

Yes, that is a flaw. In an Orthodox country he would drink vodka.

From the Second Book of Humans, Chapter 10:

Then Orthonorm gathered all the people and said to them, “CelticFan served the Princesses a little; Orthonorm will serve them at least 20% more. Now, summon all the prophets of Celestia, all her unicorns and all her pegasi; let no one be missing, for I have a great cupcake for Celestia; whoever is missing shall not live.”

But Orthonorm did it in cunning, so that he might destroy the worshipers of Celestia. And Orthonorm said, “Prepare a build-your-own-buffet for Celestia.” And they proclaimed it. Then Orthonorm sent throughout the West Coast and all the worshipers of Celestia came, so that there was not a brony left who did not come. And when they went into the Toys-R-Us, the Toys-R-Us was filled from one end to the other.

He said to the one who was in charge of the wardrobe, “Bring out cosplay outfits for all the worshipers of Celestia.” So he brought out tacky ebay buys for them. Orthonorm went into the Toys-R-Us with Jeremy the son of Dzheremi; and he said to the worshipers of Celestia, “Search and see that there is here with you none of the servants of the LORD, but only the worshipers of Celestia.”

Then they went in to offer sweaty hugs and custom miniatures.

Now Orthonorm had stationed for himself eighty professional athletes outside, and he had said, “The one who permits any of the 'men' whom I bring into your hands to escape shall give up his life in exchange.”

Then it came about, as soon as he had finished offering the cupcake, that Orthonorm said to the professional athletes and disgruntled Toys-R-Us manager, “Go in, bro them; let none come out.” And they bro'd them with the cans of Axe; and the professional athletes threw them out, and went to the girl's isle of Toys-R-Us. They brought out the sacred plushies of Celestia and burned them. They also desecrated the Sister of Celestia and her student, and made them a latrine to this day.

Thus Orthonorm eradicated Ponies...

I watched 4 minutes of this (until just after the popcorn started popping or whatever), then I had to turn it off. I'm not going to say what I thought of it, because I don't want to be responsible for any pony-rage. Suffice it to say it would also violate the age old dictum of not saying anything at all if you don't have anything nice to say.

Hmm. The color scheme is soft and calming. It reminds me of those pastel-colored M&Ms they have for sale around Easter every year. There. That'll do.

P.S. I really hope you didn't watch the Norwegian version. It isn't that good (voice acting), the voice acting in the American version is the best in every brony's opinion.

Oh yes. The intro is bad. There are a few girly-but-still-good episodes, but the intro is the most eyeroll-inducing part of the show. Pretty much everyone gags the first time they see it. Just ignore it.

That's great! If you think S1E1+2 are good, just wait. As the crew got more episodes under their belt, they continue getting better and better (both in plot and in production quality). You'll have fun as you move deeper into the season.

Has everyone heard this amazing song yet? Lullaby for a Princess (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4tyvJJzSDk)

It's about the banishment of Luna from Celestia's perspective. The singer has a beautiful voice. She should be a pro.

How's Season 1 going, Cyrillic?

That poster is fantastic. (Except Scootaloo is seriously deformed and Spike seems to have gotten the Apple-teeny disease.)

Speaking of spoilers, the synopsis of Episode 3 of Season 3 has been posted online: http://www.equestriadaily.com/2012/10/season-3-episode-3-synopsis-and-title.html

Apparently various cable/satellite providers are airing/have posted an 8-minute spoiler from the season premiere. Video here: http://www.equestriadaily.com/2012/10/cox-ondemand-and-direct-tv-crystal.html

I'm not watching it. I like the little scraps they've thrown us, but I don't want to spoil the whole episode. But if anyone else wants to watch it, there it is.

Don't do it. November 10 is so close. 255 hours.

I looked up the schedule for the Hub, and the premiere is going to be aired again on Sunday and Monday. They're going to milk it for all it's worth.

Just watched it! Missed the live showing (Renaissance Festival lol). I was very impressed, it looked spectacular, especially the crystal ponies. The only problem I had was, they really did not show the villain enough.
Title: Re: Bronies
Post by: age234 on November 11, 2012, 01:00:42 AM
I've seen a lot of people saying that online. I personally think he was more of a plot device than a traditional villain. The story seemed to be more about developing Twilight's character than an adventure to defeat a villain. In that way he was more like Nightmare Moon than Discord or Chrysalis, I think. If they had more than 42 minutes he could have been developed, but as it stands I think Twi's development was more important than his. (Though I could appreciate some basic explanation of motivation at least.)

That said, Lord of the Rings managed 3 epic movies/books with a villain that's a giant holographic eyeball.

I watched it again, and it was a lot better the second time. A few things I noticed:

- Applejack is best pony, and I'm happy that she was much more than a background pony in this one.

- I liked the Twilight-Spike relationship. Such a cute brother-sister sort of pair, they.

- We heard the songs before, but I enjoyed the reprise at the end.

- Twilight's sonic rageboom and Pinkie's Fluttershy costume were huge laughs for me.

And this:

When the show aired on the Hub, seasons 1 & 2 were full of cheesy daytime cable-quality ads for stuffed animals and dolls.

I find it humorous what kinds of ads ran during the season 3 premiere:

- Skylanders (monster toy and video game series)
- Nano Speed (Matchbox car track system)
- Xploderz (Nerf-like foam guns)
- Moshlings Theme Park (handheld video game)
- Leapster GS (handheld video game)
- GAK (toy slime)
- Floam (sculpting foam)

The advertisers don't seem to realize it's a girl's show either. LOL.

So word on the street is, all of the ponies are going to become humans in a new television show.

Doesn't that violate some sort of Church dogma about ousia transmogrification or something, like how angels can't become human and vis versa?

I would like to have some Patristic commentary on this. Argumentate it, and explain.

Argumentate it and explain.

Such evolutionary marvels should be treated like non-Orthodox trinitarians. Their transformation to humanhood is a baptism-into-life, so to speak. But this baptism is merely an empty form, which needs to be filled. Thus they should be chrismated, and that will provide that grace which had not been there before, filling the baptism with salvific substance.

Threadus resurrexit!

I think the controversy behind MLP and the reasons why "bronies" are so defensive, goes to a deeper psychological root.   MLP has a lot of feminine base/estrogen in the show,  and therefore bronies get so defensive because they don't want to be seen  as "less than a man" and therefore weak, or inferior..

Although some would never directly state it, all such ideas are based off of stereotypes.   Who you are has nothing to do with how you express yourself.  With 7 billion people on this planet, I doubt any of us are going to fit into one box or another...   Include that with everyone possessing an animus/anima or masculine and feminine traits within them, regardless of biological sex.
